Describe their life style? What is silsila? 9. Briefly describe the administration (Civil and Military) of Chandragupta Maurya. PART -D SOURCE BASED QUESTIONS 1. Read the source given below carefully and answer the questions: Education and Entertainment This is what Ibn Juzayy, who was deputed to write what Ibn Battuta dictated, said in his introduction: A gracious direction was transmitted (by the ruler) that he (Ibn Battuta) should dictate an account of the cities which he had seen in his travel, and of the interesting events which had clung to his memory, and that he should speak of those whom he had met of the rulers of countries, of their distinguished men of learning, and their pious saints. Accordingly, he dictated upon these subjects a narrative which gave entertainment to the mind and delight to the ears and eyes, with a variety of curious particulars by the exposition of which he gave edification and of marvellous things, by referring to which he aroused interest.

Mention any three exciting things which he noticed in India. 3 2.Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that followed from Proper social roles Here is a story from the Adi Parvan of the Mahabharata: Once Drona, a Brahmana who taught archery to the Kuru princes, was approached by Ekalavya, a forest dwelling nishada (a hunting community). When Drona, who knew the dharma, refused to have him as his pupil, Ekalavya returned to the forest, prepared an image of Drona out of clay, and treating it as his teacher, began to practise on his own.in due course, he acquired great skill in archery. One day, the Kuru princes went hunting and their dog, wandering in the woods, came upon Ekalavya. When the dog smelt the dark nishada wrapped in black deer skin, his body caked with dirt, it began to bark. Annoyed, Ekalavya shot seven arrows into its mouth. When the dog returned to the Pandavas, they were amazed at this superb display of archery. They tracked down Ekalavya, who introduced himself as a pupil of Drona. Drona had once told his favourite student Arjuna, that he would be unrivalled amongst his pupils. Arjuna now reminded Drona about this. Drona approached Ekalavya, who immediately acknowledged and honoured him as his teacher. When Drona demanded his right thumb as his fee, Ekalavya unhesitatingly cut it off and offered it. But thereafter, when he shot with his remaining fingers, he was no longer as fast as he had been before. Thus, Drona kept his word: no one was better than Arjuna. 1. Why did Drona refuse to have Eklavya as his pupil? 2 2. Why did Drona ask for such type of gurudakshina? Give reasons What did Drona demand from Eklavya? How did Eklavya react on it? 3 How artefacts are identified Saddle querns... are found in considerable numbers... and they seem to have been the only means in use for grinding cereals. As a rule, they were roughly made of hard, gritty, igneous rock or sandstone and mostly show signs of hard usage. As their bases are usually convex, they must have been set in the earth or in mud to prevent their rocking. Two main types have been found : those on which another smaller stone was pushed or rolled to and fro, and others with which a second stone was used as a pounder, eventually making a large cavity in the nether stone. Querns of the former type were probably used solely for grain; the second type possibly only for pounding herbs and spices for making curries. In fact, stones of which latter type are dubbed curry stones by our workmen and our cook asked for the loan of one from the museum for use in the kitchen. i.what are the two types of querns? 2 ii. Explain any two ways in which the archaeologists classify finds and way they determine the function Read the source given below carefully and answer the questions: Draupadi s question Draupadi is supposed to have asked Yudhisthira whether he had lost himself before staking her. Two contrary opinions were expressed in response to this question. One, that even if Yudhisthira had lost himself earlier, his wife remained under his control, So he

4 could stake her. Two, that an unfree man (as Yudhisthira was when he had lost himself) could not stake another person. The matter remained unresolved; ultimately, Dhritarashtra restored to the Pandavas and Draupadi their personal freedom. Questions (i) What question had Draupadi asked from Yudhisthira? 2 (ii) What were the two contradictory views about Yudhisthira's staking Draupadi to a game of dice? 2 (iii) Why and when did he stake Draupadi to a game of dice? 2 (iv) At last who resolved the issue and how? 1 5.Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that followed from The pilgrimage of the Mughal princess Jahanara, 1643 The following is an excerpt from Jahanara s biography of Shaikh Muinuddin Chishti, titled Munis al Arwah (The Confidant of Spirits) : After praising the one God... this lowly faqira Jahanara... went from the capital Agra in the company of my great father (Emperor Shah Jahan) towards the pure region of incomparable Ajmer... I was committed to this idea, that every day in every station I would perform two cycles of optional prayer.for several days... I did not sleep on a leopard skin at night, I did not extend my feet in the direction of the blessed sanctuary of the revered saving master, and I did not turn my back towards him. I passed the days beneath the trees. On Thursday, the fourth of the blessed month of Ramzan, I attained the happiness of pilgrimage to the illuminated and the perfumed tomb. With an hour of daylight remaining, I went to the holy sanctuary and rubbed my pale face with the dust of that threshold. From the doorway to the blessed tomb I went barefoot, kissing the ground. Having entered the dome, I went around the light-filled tomb of my master seven times...finally with my own hand I put the finest quality of itar on the perfumed tomb of the revered one, and having taken off the rose scarf that I had on my head, I placed it on the top of the blessed tomb... (i) How does Jahanara show her devotion to the Shaikh?
