3 THE GREAT EPICS SHEET 2 The Mahabharata The Mahabharata is the story of the Kauraves and the Pandavas. The Kauraves were hundred brothers of whom Duryodhana was the eldest. They were the sons of Dhritarashtra. The Pandavas were five brothers - Yudhishthira, Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva. They were the sons of Pandu. Both the Kauravas and the Pandavas fought a great battle at Kurukshetra, for control of the kingdom of Hastinapur. The Pandavas finally won the war. The Bhagawad Gita is a part of the Mahabharata. The Ramayana The Ramayana tells the story of the victory of good over evil. Rama was King Dashratha s eldest son. Queen Kaikeyi, one of the King s wives, wanted the King to send Rama to exile so that her son Bharata could become the king. Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, was sent to live in the forest for fourteen years. There, Ravana, the King of Lanka, kidnapped Sita. Rama and Lakshmana, with the help of Hanuman and an army of monkey, defeated Ravana and rescued Sita. The Mahabharata and the Ramayana are epics. An epic is a long poem about the adventures of great heroes. The Mahabharata is the longest epic in the world. GROW WITH... There are many stories and lessons to be learnt from these two great epics. Both have many stories of bravery and sacrifice and teach us that good will always wins over evil. 3
