Sri Jayanthi Mannargudi Rajagopalan Sri Jayanthi is associated with the combination of RohiNI constellation with KrishNa paksha Ashtami.Further, there should not be even a second of Sapthami on the day of Sri Jayanthi. If suddhashtami is not possible, One should celebrate Sri Jayanthi on Navami day with Suddha RohiNi. If that is not possible, then the dasami day with Mrugaseersha Nakshathram is the next choice among dates. The tradition of great souls is that to fast on this day, perform Visesha AarAdhanam with special sankalpam during the vrushabha lagnam at night and at the end of the aaradhana uthsavam brak fast. It is the only time, when night paarayanai is permitted. For those, who can not observe such a rigor, the partaking of food after chandrodhayam is recommended.isvara Samhithai is the source of this ruling. There are similar prescribtions for the determination of date for SravaNa dvadasi and Sri Rama Navami.Sri Rama navami is celebratd in the chaithra Maasam, Navami and Punarvasu Nakshathram.Chaithram follows the chandra Maasa tradition. Therefore, sukla Paksha navami has to be taken as the date for Sri RamA jayanthi. Chaithra Maasam in the chadrayana tradition may come in panguni ( Meena Maasam ) or Chitthirai ( Mesha maasam ). The key clue is the chaithra Suddha Navami according to Prapanna Jayanthi NirNayaM.During Kadaka Lagnam on Chaithra Suddha Navami, aaradhanai with special sankalpam should be performed and the paaranai shuld be completed thereafter. Another point to bear in mind regarding KrishNa and Raama Jayanthi is that these two Jayanthis are celebrated on the basis of Nakshathram, where as the other Jayanthis such as Matsya, Koorma et al are fixed on the basis of thithis. Sri Narasimha Jayanthi is to be celebrated on VaikAsi maasam Sukla Paksha Chathurdhasi and the Visesha aaradahanam for BhagavAn is performed during PradhOsham ( before suryasthamanam ). SandhyA worship follows thereafter. Srirangam, Kaanchi and other paancharathralayams observe it on SowramAna path and elsewhere in chandramana tradition. The tradition set by every acharya tradition is to be followed in general.

Am a followers of Naama Sampradhayam and quickly my monkey mind mapped "NAM" as "NAAM". This with great enthusiasm I jumped into the attachment to read more, but realised it talks about the current trends in our society. This great tradition "Naama Sampradhaya" is followed by almost all Archaryas, Vaishnavas, Alwars, Nayanmars, Great stalwarts like Prahlada, Naradha, Parasara, Pundaleeka, Vyasa, Ambareesha, Suka, Sownaka, Beeshmagathan and all Bhagavathas all are after one and it is the Bhagavan Naam - Name of the Almighty, Bhagavan Naam is chanted meditated, sung, glorified along with Bhagavat Roopam, Gunam and Tatvam Name come before form, characters and properties. So is with Bhagvan Naam too. If we need to protect Nam Sampradhayam, we just need to hold on to Naam. Bhagavan Naam. Narayana ; Govinda ; Krishna ; Rama ; Hari ; Vasudeva Panduranga Hari Vittala Jai Jai Raam Krishna Hari ; Hare Raama Hare Krishna ; Hare Maadhava I hope you are hearing! The play is getting many into worry mode. Time to change the playscript. When is Viswaksena been sent to reorder everything to vibrate your Thiru Naamam? mmmm? ghanesh p <ghanesh@gmail.com

Every week if you write just one page, then the reader may find it a bit more difficult to follow. Regards Mugunthanchari Am very happy in reading this article The main reason why our sampradayam is going like this is that there is no unity among us?

If unity is there no one can beat our sampradayam Our ancestors are not telling the young hood people certain things which is important for our sampdradayam if this happens no one like that adyar boy wont answer those questions which is very very shocking to read. 13 Gita The Wisdom of Krishna Practical Guide to Right and Happy Living: In Twenty - Seven Self-contained Essays: Thotalam Chellaswami, Trustee, Srinivasa Gita Satsangh Trust (Retired Senior I. E. S. Officer Govt. of India and Senior Advisor UN (ILO): 14. Krishna stated that Arjuna s position is untenable from the points of view of spiritual un-aryan like (anaaryajusht am), ethical heaven barring (asvargyam) and materialistic disgraceful (akeertikaram). Krishna is emphasising that there is no greater enemy than self-pity (not to be confused with God-like compassion) and bondage of dejection both of them helplessly chained to loss of faith in one-self. Self-pity is a form of self-indulgence or a physical shrinking of the nerves, an egoistic emotional shrinkage of the heart all arising out of the envisaged destruction of men, who are his own people and a feeling that with these people dead, life would be purposeless. To be firm of body, formidable of mind and constant of character these excellences are born of strength. It is in the cultivation of this strength lies not only the right conduct, but also liberation. Strength is life and weakness is death. As Krishna had stated na etat tvayi upapadyate It does not befit thee. This indeed is a positive and constructive appeal based on self-respect. It is an appeal to one and all to rise higher and higher and to discover new sources of energy from within one s own self. By this observation Krishna is cautioning all escapists from life s responsibilities who vax eloquence in high sounding philosophy of sanyaasa (renunciation). Krishna wants Arjuna to be a man of action and so others too, to be practical and to be of service to society. The more spiritual you become, the more fearless and strong you become and more compassionate as well. If we can cultivate these virtues, we shall then become deep as the ocean and broad as the sky. Krishna is infusing Arjuna with vigour and detachment by telling him that he is the soul with limitless power and wisdom. Krishna is telling Arjuna that only those possessing strong minds can achieve anything worthwhile. The weak-minded struggle, not knowing how and what to decide. It is rightly said in the s rutis na ayam aatmaa balaheenena labhyaha the truth cannot be realized by weak minds. In order to gain a strong and steady mind one should not succumb to emotional influence, weak-heartedness and self-pity in any situations of life. He is not to retreat because of the undeserved and misplaced pity for the wicked forces or because of vastness of destruction involved. We are not to miss the expression of Krishna kutah wherefrom these impurities kashmalam have come? The problem, Krishna is pointing out, is not inherent in the nature of the individual soul; it is something external. Some how or other a covering has come over the consciousness. As long as these impurities are present, one cannot know the progressive values of life and to understand the distinction between matter and spirit. This verse (2.3) expresses

concisely the practical consequences of accepting the doctrine and philosophy of the immortal self or aatman taught in the succeeding part of this chapter two. Use of the word paramtapa (scorcher of foes) for Arjuna is not to be missed. That which brings delusion and weakness is sin. What is true of the mind is also true of the body. Any action or attitude which generates physical weakness is also sin. This advice, administered as a kind of shock treatment, had some effect. But the main objection of Arjuna still remained though the area of this objection had been considerably narrowed. He still thought that the problem existed at the basis of individual and social life. So Arjuna observed: How could I, O slayer of Madhu, encounter with arrows in battle Bheeshma and Drona. Worthy of worship (pujaa arhau), O slayer of foes. Desisting from killing of gurus, who are highly honourable, it would be more meritorious in this world even to have to eat of a beggar s meal. Choosing, on the other hand, to kill these gurus, I should be feasting on here on blood stained fortune seeking enjoyments of life. Neither is it clear which would be better to us; that we win or they win over us. Those very persons are standing ranged before us, the sons of Dhritaraast ra, killing whom we would no longer wish to live. (2.4 6): 15. We cannot fail to notice that in the above words there is no dogmatism; a kind of tenderness and uncertainty in Arjuna s stand is clearly noticeable. 3. Arjuna s Surrender: Blessed are those that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Jesus Christ: 16. A person s inner strength of purpose, dedication, consistent adherence to basic principles. and other higher values, beat a retreat when confronted with any deep crisis, especially if it is problem of life and death a crisis of the soul, as is the case of Arjuna in the battle situation. Arjuna, placed in a helpless situation, decides that his problem cannot be resolved at any level of human thinking and feeling. Arjuna influenced by Krishna s exhortation (shock treatment Krishna s first intervention) and his own inherent good nature, purified by the sincere expression of his sorrow, soon realised the futility of mere emotional nature of his earlier position, and states precisely and consciously his, rather, philosophical doubt, and surrendered to Krishna, calling himself as His disciple and requesting to show him a sure path by which he could confidently walk and attain supreme bliss (nis s reyas). It is this supreme surrender that inaugurates the blessings of the wisdom of Krishna. Arjuna said: My nature is weighed down with taint of feeble-minded-ness; my understanding is clouded as to my duty. I request Thy Grace. Tell me unequivocally what the ultimate good (nis s reyas) is for me. I am Thy disciple. Do put me, who has taken refuge in Thee, on the right track (that will lead to my ultimate good). Even if I should win unchallenged sovereignty of a prosperous earthly kingdom or even the lordship over the gods, I do not feel that it would dispel the grief that withers up my senses. (2.7, 8): ************************

DHARMA STHOTHRAM PART Mukthanam paramaagathi Avyaya Dharma sthothram containing Moksha Dharmam is found in 12 th nama, which is Mukthanaam Paramayai gathaye namaha the state of highest nature, the supreme goal for the released souls, of one who attains Mukthi(salvation ).Moksha Dharma states HE is Lord Narayana and He must be known as the supreme purusha and the inner soul of all beings. There is no superior to HIM. One who attains mukthi will never come back to the materialistic world. In Gita 7.7 Lord Krishna tells Dhananjaya, as Beyond Me, there is nothing. All this is strung on to me as a row of pearls upon a thread. One should bear in mind that there is no other cause for the universe other than HIM. This principle of truth is the uncaused cause. With reference to everything He is the cause, but He Himself is uncaused. He is not the product of something else. If He were, He would be changeable and therefore finite. The infinite knows no change. From this Nama we can come to a conclusion, that released souls are many and are different from one another. Released souls are on who once for all and completely free from the enshrouding coverings which are the result of bondage of primordial matters, nescience latent impressions of actions and their fruitions. All become free by the grace of paramapurusha. The worshippers of paramapurusha become great and attain the transcendental world of paramapada. They also get the state of equality with Him in regard to the possession of auspicious qualities like Him. In this connection, it was told that one devotee started performing Sahasranama Archana starting as Visvasyai namaha. But he suddenly told as Darithraya namaha. Lord immediately hold his hand and asked him the reason for such a nama in his archana. Devotee said as he has observed some poverty with Him. Lord then said, No I am only rich in everything. Devotee proclaimed that he could prove his statement. Lord then

surprised at his words, and replied to devotee s questions. When devotee asked as Who is equal to you, lord told No there is nobody else like me with all aspects. So Nil report is for this question. Again Devotee questioned Lord as tell who is superior to you. Lord again could not tell anything, but coolly agreed for nil report to this also. So devotee proclaimed as lord is poor in all these points as he is giving nil reports only. So I can call Him as Darithraya namaha. Vishnu thus glorifies always in all aspects, in full and in empty. The lord has two aspects to His nature, a lower and a higher. The lower nature consists of the world of matter and materialistic benefits, and the higher nature is consciousness., the principles of life, in us. The Lord s higher nature expressing through His own lower nature is the entire play of living creatures. The Lord is neither the higher nor the lower prakriti. In Gita 8.16 Krishna says as punarjanma na vidyathe there is no more any rebirth. This nama stresses this as there is higher level to all mukthas, and no more rebirths. When one keeps a chocolate box and a cash of thousand rupees, a child with its little knowledge asks only for a chocolate box. Similarly many are interested only in materialistic life through many births. We should therefore seek for no more rebirths and an eternal mukthi.. The 13 th nama is Avyaya namaha which means there is no change in HIM. Vyaya is destruction. Destruction cannot be without change. Avyaya is changeless and without destruction. The indestructible, changeless eternal is only supreme God as Upanishads glorify it as Ajaro Amaro Avyayah, as one without change, old age or death. The supreme God is ever unborn. To be born is to change. The changeless can never be born, and it is never born, it can never die. That which has neither birth nor death is immortal. Every change takes place in consciousness, but consciousness does not itself ever change. In Archavathara moorthis we worship Sriman narayana in various forms, in various pastures as sitting, standing, lying, in many vahanams, in attractive kreedams, muthangi, rathnangi, in pleasing alankarams of mohini, vennaithazhi, pattabhiramar.all these are done for our satisfaction, for our enjoyment, pleasures and Deiveega Anubhavams. It is therefore suggested not to close one s eyes when worshipping in any temple. We should bear it in our mind that all uthsavams, alankarams, poojas, rituals in temples are done only to changeless supreme God. The lord s pervasion in the universe is such that the form of any object whatsoever presents to us only His form, since that object could not exist without Him. The lord who is of the nature of the self-luminous knowledge pervades through the universe through the full-length breadth height depth and is the very life of all nature and of all the selves. But He is always without any birth, death, change, growth and is only ever green, ever fresh and ever shiny. To be continued Arumpuliyur Jagannathan Rangarajan

VALMIKI RAMAYANA By Dr. Saroja Ramanujam, M.A.,Ph.D, siromani Sundarakanda 1. About Sundarakanda Sundarakanda is important for many reasons. The whole Sundara kanda extols the greatness of Hanuman. The word Sundara actually means Hanuman. The story goes that Valmiki wanted to name the kanda after Hanuman but Hanuman objected and the sage said that he would name it as Sundara kanda to which Hanuman agreed and Valmiki asked him to see his mother before going away and when he did so, his mother called him by the name Sundara. Then only Hanuman knew that the sage has tricked him and had named the kanda after him. The role of Hanuman in uniting Seetha with Rama was that of an acharya uniting the jiva who is led astray by the senses and imprisoned in Lanka, denoting the sarira, with the Lord from whom the jiva was separated. This is the inner meaning of the golden deer episode. This kanda also extols the chastity of Seetha justifying the Ramayana being termed by Valmiki himself as seethaayaah charitham mahath. The reading of Sundarakanda is supposed to be equivalent to that of whole Ramayana and sundarkandaparayana during Navarathri is very auspicious. It is effective in causing marriage for the unmarried and reading the whole sundarakanda in one sitting will bring what is lost, whether it is a thing or a person. The whole gist of Sundarakanda is brought out by Kamban in just one verse so beautiful in meaning and which serves as a prayer to Anjaneya. anjile onru pettraan anjile onraitthaavi anjile onru aaraaga aariyarkkaaga Egi anjile onru pettra anangaikkandu ayalaarooril anjile onrai vaitthaan avan nammai alitthukkaappaan anjile onru pettraan- Hanuman who was the son of Vayu, one of the five elements, anjile onru. anjile onraitthaavi- leaped over the ocean, which is one of the five elements. anjile onru aaraaga- through the sky, which is one of the five aariyarkkaaga Egi- going on the mission of the noble Rama anjile onru peettra anangaikkandu- seeing the Seetha the

daughter of the earth, one of the five elements ( as Seetha came from the earth) anjile onrai vaaitthaan- set fire, one of the five elements in ayalaarooril in the land of the enemy. Now Hanuman decides to cross the ocean and was standing on the shore and grew up in stature. Thatho raavana neethaayaah seethaayaah SathrukarsanaH iyesha padham anveshtum chaaranaacharithe pathi Then the destroyer of foes, Hanuman, desired to go on the path traveled by the celestials in order to search for the place of Seetha who was carried away by Ravana. dhushkaram nishprathidhvandhvam chikeershan karma vaanarah samudhagrasirogreevah gavaam pathih ivaabahou The vanara, Hanuman, wishing to do the impossible without obstacles, shone like a bull with raised head and neck. Another reason that Sundarakanda is extolled as the most important part of Ramayana is that the first two slokas show the anubandha chathushtayam of the whole kanda and so can be considered as a complete work by itself. Any work grantha should have a reference to four aspects either at the outset or at the end. In Gita we have the anubandshachathushtayam denoted at the end. The four requisites of a grantha are, 1. The indication of the grantha itself 2. The adhikari or one who is qualified to read it 3. vishaya the subject matter 4. prayojana- the fruit of learning the grantha. The grantha the work is indicated by SathrukarshaNaH, that is Hanuman as the work is about his exploits in overcoming the inimical forces. The adhikari is the one who wants to tread the path of celestials, chaaranaacharithe pathi padham iyesha as reading the sundarakanda is auspicious. The Vishaya or subject matter is raavana neethaayaah seethayaah anveshtum, the search of Seetha who was carried away by Ravana and also the word seethaayaah denotes the greatness of Seetha which is also the subject matter. Prayojana, the fruit of the work is indicated in the second sloka, namely, dushakaram nishprathidhvandhvam chikeershan karma, denoting that all obstacles in any desired task however difficult will vanish. 2. Hanuman crosses the sea. Hanuman grew large and stood on the mountain ready to cross the ocean like a king bull and a lion and an elephant with his might. Before he made preparations to fly on the sky he saluted his father Vayu, the Sun and other devas denoting that before one begins any work one should pray to the devas who are the powers behind the elements in order not to have any obstacles. Then he made himself enormous. The mountain was pressed by him who wished to raise himself to the sky

and the oars from the mines in the mountain spilled out and it shone with many colours. The red stones broken by the pressure seemed as though fire was coming out of the mountain which looked like offering smoke of incense to Hanuman. The serpents came out along with the other animals who tumbled out with the force of the pressure exerted by the feet of Hanuman and the poison emitted by the serpents could not be quelled by the power of the herbs in the mountain. The sages doing penance in the mountain suspected that it was being broken by demons and the vidhyadharas who were enjoying themselves on the mountain rose up in the air along with their food and drink. Valmiki describes Hanuman who intended to cross the ocean thus: esha parvatha sankaaso hanuman maaruthaathmajah thitheershathi mahaavegah saagaram makaraaalyam This Hanuman the son of Vayu, mighty like a mountain, with great speed, wishes to cross the ocean, the abode of sharks and crocodiles. Valmiki give three adjectives to Hanuman. ParvathasankaaSaH, like a mountain denoting his strength, maaruthaathmajah, the son of Vayu which denotes his capacity to fly and mahaa vegah of great speed, which indicates his ability to cross the ocean. Hanuman circled his tail and released it to facilitate flying which looked like a great serpent caught by Garuda circling its body. He stretched his body with his feet firm controlling his breath ready to jump and told the vanaras that he will go to Lanka like the arrow of Rama and search for Seetha and if she is not be found there he will go to devaloka with the same speed and if he could not find her even there he will bind Ravana and bring him along with Lanka. Saying this Hanuman rose up in the sky with such a speed that the trees of the mountain were uprooted as by a cyclone and followed him for some distance and fell into the sea. It looked like the relatives following one who is going away to a distant place. Hanuman was flying in the sky and the sea was having high tide due to the speed and the devas helped him, the sun being benevolent and mild and the wind was favourable while the devas and sages and other celestial beings were looking on marveled at his feat. The ocean, samudra raja, saw Hanuman flying above and though that Hanuman who was going on a mission of Rama of the clan of Ikshvaku should be honoured because the sea was dug by the sons of Sagara, who belonged to the clan of Ikshvaku. He told Mainaka, who had wings, to rise above so that Hanuman could rest on him for a while. Mainaka did so but hanuman, thinking that it was some obstacle barring his way pushed him down with his chest. Then Mainaka took a human form and stood on his peak and spoke to Hanuman thus. He said that once upon a time all mountains were having wings and used to fly over the earth and people got frightened lest they will descend on them. Seeing them Indra got angry and cut off their wings with his vajrayudha. Mainaka was helped by Vayu who pushed him into the sea. Hence he said that he was indebted to Vayu and wanted to honour Hanuman, the son of Vayu, and he was asked to do so also by the king of the sea since he was enlarged by the sons of Sagara of Ikshvaku vamsa. He asked Hanuman to rest on him for a while, eating the fresh fruits on the mountain. But Hanuman patting him on the back said that he had promised that he would not tarry on the way and he considered himself honoured already. Indra seeing the act of Mainaka was pleased and told him that he could go anywhere he liked without fear but Mainaka preferred to stay in the sea as he was blocking the netherworld so that the demons there could not come out. The celestial beings, devas and sages saw Hanuman going fast in the

sky and wanted to test his courage and resourcefulness and told Surasa the mother of nagas to create obstacle to Hanuman. Surasa who was capable of assuming any form she wanted appeared in front of Hanuman as a huge demoness and told him that he was ordained by the devas to become her food and hence he should enter her mouth. Hanuman told her that he was going on an important mission by the command of Rama and he would enter her mouth once he had accomplished his task. But Surasa was insistent on his entering her mouth and hanuman challenged her to make her mouth big enough to hold him. Surasa went on enlarging her mouth as Hanuman was increasing his size and when her mouth was hundred yojanas wide Hanuman made himself atom-sized and quickly entered her mouth and came out. Then he told her with folded hands I have fulfilled your request oh DhaakshaayaNi, and she assumed her real form and blessed him. She was one of the daughters of Dhaksha having another name Kathru, the wife of Kasyapa and the mother of nagas and hence Hanuman addressed her as DhaakshaayaNi. Then Hanuman was proceeding along for some time without obstacles when he was seen by a demoness called Simhika. She had the power to draw any being she sees by their shadow and eat them. Hence she was also called ChaayagraahiNee. Suddenly Hanuman felt that his speed was impeded and looking around he saw the demoness and understood that she was the one of whom Sugriva had already cautioned him against. Then Hanuman grew in size as he did with Surasa and she also opened her mouth wider and wider. Hanuman suddenly shrunk himself and entered into her mouth and came out with her vital organs and she fell down into the sea dead. The celestial beings and sages in the heavenly region blessed him saying that one who has courage, sharp perception, intellect and skill never fails to accomplish whatever he wished. Hanuman showed his courage in deciding to cross the sea, his sharp perception in handling the friendly offer of Mainaka, his intellect in winning over Surasa and his kill in destroying Simhika. Another explanation of the feat of Hanuman in crossing the ocean is as follows. In attempting any new venture one has to face three kinds of obstacles, first from his close relatives, secondly from his well wishers and thirdly from those who do not want him to succeed. The close relatives want to make life easy for him and do not want him to trouble himself. Hence they may ask him to rest and take a decision slowly after thinking well. They are like Mainaka. These have to be pacified by endearing words as Hanuman spoke to Mainaka The friends on the other hand want to test his ability and may try to frighten him off by dire consequences and they have to be tackled and convinced with intelligence as Hanuman won over Surasa. The enemies may try to put obstacles on his way and prevent him from succeeding. These have to be tackled with strength and have to be overcome as Hanuman did in the case of Simhika.

SRIVAISH NAVISM PALSUVAI virundhu. Dear All, Here is a poem on Gajendra Varadar. GAJENDRA VARADAR Sweet sublime sight to be cherished forever, Mystic memories to be treasured like never, Dispeller of darkness in regal sparkling yellow, Dispenser definitive of true wisdom mellow, Imposingly grand aura has my mind in swirls, Truly blessed, titillating black are those curls, Then those eyes bewitching beautiful black pearls, I wonder, Red like the newly bloomed fresh lotus petals, I surrender! Sublime lotus-like lips conceal that pearly white trace, Fine eyebrows etched to delight on that haloed face, Enchantment never ending are His mighty arms long, Pertinent, praise them, powerful unmatchedly strong, Then my gaze on Thy feet, forever benevolent, For they have protected me against the malevolent! In three worlds to match His majestic splendor? Only to Him I completely surrender. 75TH THIRUNAKSHTRAM ;SRIMAD ANDAVAN;PHOTOS OF 12 JUUNE 2010;13TH JUNE THIRUNAKSHTRMPhotos taken today, on 12 njune 2010 are at veeraraghavan ******************************************* 13 JUNE 2010 ;75 TH SRIMAD ANDAVAN THIRUNAKSHTRAM DAY PHOTOS The Photos are available as seeperate album in Swamin, Attached the Invitation for 1187th "Janana Mahotsava Pattrika"(Aani Anusham) of "Sriman Nadhamunigal" to be held at his Avathara Thirumaligai at Chathurvedhimangalam (Kuppangkhuzhi) near Kattumannarkoil between and Kindly publish it in our magazine. 39 SRI NARASIMHA DARSHANAM BY. Sri. JEGANNAATHAN. K.S. Narasimha also spelt as Narasingh and Narasinga, is an avatara of Vishnu described in the Puranas, Upanishads and other ancient religious texts of Hinduism, and one of Hinduism's most popular deities, as evidenced in early epics, iconography, and temple and festival worship for over a millennium. He is visualized as half-man/half-lion, having a human-like torso and lower body, with a lion-like face and claws. This image is widely worshiped in deity form by a significant number of Vaishnava groups, particularly in Southern India. He is known primarily as the 'Great Protector' who specifically defends and protects his devotees in times of need.

Scriptural sources References to Narasimha are found in a wide variety of the Puranic scriptures, with seventeen versions of the main narrative, some in more detail than others. The Bhagavata Purana (Canto 7), Agni Purana (4.2-3), Brahmanda Purana ( ), Vayu Purana ( ), Harivamsa (41 & ), Brahma Purana ( ), Vishnudharmottara Purana (1.54), Kurma Purana ( ), Matsya Purana ( ), Padma Purana (Uttara-khanda 5.42), Shiva Purana ( & ), Linga Purana ( ), Skanda Purana 7 ( ) and Vishnu Purana ( ) all contain depictions of the Narasimha avatar. There is also a short reference in the Mahabharata ( ) and a Tapani Upanishad (Narasimha tapani Upanisad), earliest of Vaishnava Upanishads named in reference to him. References from Vedas One phrase of the Rig Veda appears to indicate an epithet that can be rightly attributed to the form of Vishnu as Narasimha it clearly calls the qualities of Vishnu that are seen only in this avatara as "like some wild beast, dread, prowling, mountain-roaming" (RV.I 154.2a). There is a reference or an allusion to knowledge of Namuci story in RV.VIII 14.13: "With waters' foam you tore off, Indra, the head of Namuci, subduing all contending hosts." This short reference is believed to have culminated in the full puranic story of this highly popular Narasimha form. Narasimha and Prahlada Narasimha kills Hiranyakashipu, as Prahlada and his mother bow before Lord Narasimha The story of Narasimha as described in the Bhagavata Purana is as follows: In his previous avatara of Varaha, Vishnu killed an asura known as Hiranyaksha. Hiranyaksha's brother Hiranyakashipu, greatly angered by this, started to abhor Vishnu and his followers. To which end he decides to attempt to kill Vishnu by gaining mystical powers, which he believes Brahma, the chief among the devas will award him if he undergoes many years of great austerity and penance. This initially seems to work as planned with Brahma becoming pleased by Hiranyakashipu's austerities. Brahma thus appears before Hiranyakashipu and offers him a boon that he will personally make true anything he wishes for. In reply to which Hiranyakashipu requests the following: O my lord, O best of the givers of benediction, if you will kindly grant me the benediction I desire, please let me not meet death from any of the living entities created by you.

Grant me that I will not die within any residence or outside any residence, during the daytime or at night, nor on the ground or in the sky. Grant me that my death not be brought about by any weapon, nor by any human being or animal. Grant me that I not meet death from any entity, living or nonliving. Grant me, further, that I can not be killed by any demigod or demon or by any great snake from the lower planets. Since no one can kill you in the battlefield, you have no competitor. Therefore, grant me the benediction that I too may have no rival. Give me sole lordship over all the living entities and presiding deities, and give me all the glories obtained by that position. Furthermore, give me all the mystic powers attained by long austerities and the practice of yoga, for these cannot be lost at any time. One day while Hiranyakashipu was performing austerities at Mandaracala Mountain, his home was attacked by Indra and the other devas. At this point the divine sage, Narada intervened to protect Kayadu, whom he describes as 'sinless'. Following this event Narada takes Kayadu into his care and while under the guidance of Narada, her unborn child (Hiranyakashipu's son) Prahlada, became affected by the transcendental instructions of the sage even at such a young stage of development. Thus, Prahlada when later growing as a child began to show symptoms of this earlier training by Narada, gradually becoming recognised as a devoted follower of Vishnu, much to his father's disappointment.

Hiranyakashipu eventually becomes so angry and upset at his son's devotion to Vishnu (whom he sees as his mortal enemy) that he decides he must kill him, but each time he attempts to kill the boy, Prahlada is protected by Vishnu's mystical power. When asked, Prahlada refuses to acknowledge his father as the supreme lord of the universe and claims that Vishnu is all-pervading and omnipresent. To which Hiranyakashipu points to a nearby pillar and asks if 'his Vishnu' is in it: "O most unfortunate Prahlada, you have always described a supreme being other than me, a supreme being who is above everything, who is the controller of everyone, and who is all-pervading. But where is He? If He is everywhere, then why is He not present before me in this pillar?" Prahlada then answers, He was, He is and He will be. In an alternate version of the story, Prahlada answers He is in pillars, and he is in the smallest twig. Hiranyakashipu, unable to control his anger, smashes the pillar with his mace, and then following a tumultuous sound, Vishnu in the form of Narasimha appears from it and in defence of Prahlada moves to attack his father. In order to kill Hiranyakashipu and not upset the boon given by Brahma, the form of Narasimha was chosen. Hiranyakashipu could not be killed by human, deva or animal, Narasimha is neither one of these, as he is a form of Vishnu incarnate as a part-human, part-animal.

SRI MALOLAN AHOBILA MADAM He comes upon Hiranyakashipu at twilight (when it is neither day nor night) on the threshold of a courtyard (neither indoors nor out), and puts the demon on his thighs (neither earth nor space). Using his sharp fingernails (neither animate nor inanimate) as weapons, he disembowels and kills the demon. Kurma Purana describes the preceding battle between the Purusha and demoniac forces in which he escapes powerful weapon called, pashupata and it describes how Prahladas brothers headed by Anuhrada and thousands of other demons "were led to the valley of death (yamalayam) by the lion produced from the body of man-lion" avatara.p.85: K.P The same episode occurs in the Matshya Purana 179, several chapters after its version of the Narasimha advent. The Bhagavata Purana further narrates: even after killing Hiranyakashipu none of the present demigods were able to calm Narasimha's fury, not even Brahma. So all the gods and goddesses called his consort, Lakshmi, but she was also unable to do so. Then, at the request of Brahma, Prahlada was presented to Narasimha, and finally, he was calmed by the prayers of His devotee. Before parting, Narasimha rewards the wise Prahlada by crowning him as the king. It is believed by the followers that Narasimha that He protects his sincere devotees when they are in extreme danger. He saved Adi Sankara from being sacrificed to the goddess Kali by a Kapalika. Thus Adi Sankara composed the powerful Laksmi- Narasimha stotra. Mode of worship Due to the nature of Narasimha's form (divine anger), it is essential that worship be given with a very high level of attention compared to other deities. In many temples only life-long celibates (brahmacarya) will be able to have the chance to serve as priests to perform the daily puja. Forms where Narasimha appears sitting in a yogic posture, or with the goddess Lakshmi are the exception to this rule, as Narasimha is taken as being more relaxed in both of these instances compared to his form when first emerging from the pillar to protect Prahlada.

What is total surrender? The one who owns the atma is Lord Narayana. If a person thinks he is the owner of his atma, the person becomes a thief; he becomes guilty of a great crime. We must first realise that the atma is His, before we realise that we need to attain moksha. As long as we are caught up in the thought that the atma is ours, we can never gain liberation. Saranagati, or total surrender, is a simple enough concept, but it has many facets that one needs to understand, said Adur Asuri Madhavachari. Surrender consists of three acts, each of which must be properly understood by everyone who aspires for moksha. The first step is to become aware that the atma belongs to Lord Narayana. The atma is not independent. Nor are we the owners of it. The second component of surrender is recognising that the burden of protection rests with the Lord, and not with us. In other words, we must surrender the burden of protection to the Lord. The third component is surrendering the fruits of surrender: we should not see ourselves as enjoying the fruits of surrender, but should see the Lord as the One enjoying the fruits of our surrender. But what does surrendering the fruits of surrender mean? When we surrender, we expect moksha to be the result. Then where is the question of surrender of the result too? Does it mean moksha will not result from surrender? And if moksha is not going to be the result, why surrender at all, one may wonder. For answers to these questions, we must study the Sastras deeply. Even moksha must not be seen as the ultimate fruit. Pleasing God must be seen as the fruit of surrender. Surrender does lead to moksha, but even there the happiness of the Lord is the end that one should delight in. The Lord is happy at our total surrender, and this happiness of the Lord is the aim of the one who has properly understood the concept of surrender. Therefore, surrender does result in moksha, but we surrender the fruits of our surrender also to the Lord. We must delight in His happiness at our surrender. COURTESY : CHENNAI, DATED 14 th MAY 2010.
