Introduction Origin and evolution of Sanskrit Language The Indo-Iranian Languages The Prakrits and the Linguistic diversity in India The discovery of Sanskrit in Western Countries The first European references about Sanskrit The importance of Sanskrit in the development of Historical Linguistics. 2. Phonology Sanskrit phonological system and pronunciation The sandhi. 3. Introduction to devanāgarī script History of devanāgarī script.
2 3.2. Reading and writing exercises. 4. Verbal morphology The structure of Sanskrit root. The vocalic grades of the root: dhātu, guṇa and vṛddhi The Present, Imperfect and Perfect tenses 4.3. The Infinitive, Absolutive and Participle. 5. Nominal declension Nominal declension: Vowel and Consonant declension The Cases Pronouns: personal, demonstrative and relative pronouns Nominal Composition: dvandva, tatpuruṣa, karmadhāraya, bahuvrīhi. 6. Sanskrit Literature Vedic Literature Rāmāyaṇa and Mahābhārata Classic Sanskrit: kāvya poetry Lyric poetry Drama Pañcatantra and Hitopadeśa Scientific Treatises Phonetic treatises and Grammars. The Influence of Sanskrit Grammar on Modern Linguistics: the Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini. 7. Analysis and translation of Sanskrit texts The Mahābhārata Introduction to Meter trough Mahābhārata The use of epithets in Mahābhārata Pañcatantra and Hitopadeśa.

Vedic Language and Literature Classical Sanskrit Literature Modern Indian Languages derived from prakrit. 2. The devanāgarī script Details of devanāgarī script Reading and writing exercises. 3. Verbal morphology The Present Tense: athematic verbs The Perfect, Aorist and Future.

5 Teaching Objectives: Teaching Objectives: To reach a deeper insight in learning Sanskrit trough the analysis of Sanskrit literary works. 1. Analysis and translation of Vedic texts: Veda, Upaniṣad and Purāṇa Synonymy and Polysemy Vedic Meter and Prosody Vedic accent. 2. Analysis and translation of Classical Sanskrit texts: 2.1. Nala and Damayantī Abhijñāna Śakuntalā. 3. Sanskrit Poetics: alaṁkāraśāstra. 3.1.Sanskrit Rhetoric and Poetic The main figures of speech: different kinds of metaphor, simile, assonance, alliteration, etc.
