1 Expectations At the end of this unit : All of the children: Will be able to give an example of a choice a Hindu would make in life. Will understand that Hindu s believe in one God, but that God is reflected in many different ways and that is why there are many images of God. Will be able to recognise and describe some suitable meanings for religious stories and images. Gain an insight into a Hindu lifestyle. Most of the children will: Some of the children: Make a connection between what a Hindu does during puja (worship) and what he/she believes about God. (food is offered to God as a way of saying thank you and welcome). Remember and be able to explain specific vocabulary puja, Arti, Brahman, Ganesha, samakara, reincarnation and namaste. Explain one or more of the samskaras. Be able to say what Hindus believe happens after death. Will be able to suggest and think about questions which are important to religious people. Will be able to explain how religions give similar and different answers. (Explain the similarites and the differences between the sacred thread ceremony and confirmation, and a Christian and a Hindu wedding.) Target ACTIVITIES RESOURCES 1 Recall facts about what Hindu s believe. I will be able to compare Hindu birth rites with Christian Term: Summer 2 Duration: 5 x 55 mins Issues Religion Meaning Lifestance What choices do people have in life? What choices do Hindu s make? Journeys of Life - A Hindu Journey CONVEYING MEANING 2 EXPLORE the symbolic use of a wide range of objects, sounds, visual images, actions and gestures, and MAKE OBSERVATIONS as to the intended meaning they have to believers How are the choices a Hindu makes expressed? In this unit the children will explore the symbolic use of a wide range of objects, sounds, visual images, actions and gestures associated with A Hindu lifestyle. They will then be required to make observations as to the intended meaning they have to believers. What choices am I going to make? Exploring Hindu concept of God- Draw a web diagram and in small groups brainstorm everything you can remember about Hinduism from last year. ( prompts : Divali, gods and goddesses, festivals, places of worship, stories, place of origin) Go over answers. Watch video. Children add on to web more ideas. Discuss what else they added to web, give a couple of min. to fill in. Give out artefacts - gods/goddesses what can they say about the qualities of God? Conclusion- what would you like to find out about? Write down some questions you would like to ask a Hindu about their journey through life. Story of Ganesha and puja Read Kedar s story, ( story of a boy performing puja). Act out puja. Use questions from story for discussion. Use Experience books to read up on this more fully. Answer questions1,2,3 and 4. SEN children answer question sequence cards, 1 and 4 The Journey of life Go over vocabulary from previous lessons- puja, arti, Ganesha Can the children remember what special moments there were in a Christian Journey of life? Baptism, confirmation, marriage and funerals.. Tell them that they are going to look at Hindu Journey of Life.- Watch video. Read up on Birth and childhood for a Hindu. Answer questions1,2ab, 3a, write final question on board- How is the Sacred thread ceremony similar to Confirmation? Video, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism, pr. 3 Gift to the Child page 37/8 Hindu Experience page 32/3 Puja tray, flowers fruit, light, water, sugar Video pr. 4 experience page 16/17

2 Target ACTIVITIES RESOURCES 4 I will be able to discuss similarities and differences between the choices a Hindu couple make and a Christian. Marriage Read page 18/19 about marriage. Answer questions 1, 2 and 3. Chose one of the steps that the bridal couple take and draw around own foot and decorate word appropriately - can then be used for display 18/19 5 I wiil be able to explain the meaning behind one of the samskaras Consolidate learning about marriage and the sacred thread ceremony. Look at pictures of both ceremonies -what can the children tell you about what is going on? Chose one of the following: Sacred thread - plait 3 pieces of wool together and write a description of what each means and how the ceremony is similar to confirmation. Or, write a letter describing the ceremony to a non Hindu - imagine you had been a guest at the ceremony. Copy out the wedding vows as neatly as you can - for display. and /or write a letter describing the ceremony as though you were a guest. 16/17, 18/19 Steps in RE 3 6 I will be able to explain what Hindus believe about death. What choices am I going to make? 7 I will be able to use the knowledge gained from this unit to answer a quiz. Death Read pages 20/21 answer questions 1,2. and 3. Discuss the choices that a Hindu has in Life. How are these expressed? Sacred Thread/ vegitarian / marriage /sadhu / puja What choices do the children have in life?- Make a table or web diagram with these headings: My Choices in Life, A Hindu s Choices in Life. When finished give out quiz sheet for the children to revise with for quiz next lesson. Look at posters of Hindu moments in life- Sacred thread, marriage etc. Discuss what has been learnt during unit. RE Quiz- read out -this will help with SEN children and ensure reading is not being tested. If Time watch video - Ramyana- Quest Faith stories. 20/21 RE quiz - Hindu Journey of life. Posters Video Learning Outcomes: Children will be able to - I will be able to use the knowledge gained from this unit to answer a quiz. Opportunities for Assessment: RE Quiz- read out -this will help with SEN children and ensure reading is not being tested. Attainment Indicators: Steps - mark s will indicate levels

3 Puja match the action to the correct meaning. 1 ring bell To show that Ganesha is special. 2 light incense sticks This is to say thankyou for the light so it is circled to be like the sun. 3 light the lamp These are precious gifts- you can t live without food and water. 4 mix powder To wake up Ganesha. 5 mark Ganesha Ganesha likes the sweet smell. 6 mark yourself Light reminds people that this is a holy place. 7 offer petals, fruit and water 8 circle arti lamp 3 times To show that you belong to Ganesha. This is the powder that is used to put a mark on Ganesha s head.
