(A) Complete the following statements by choosing the appropriate alternatives from those given in the brackets and rewrite the sentence in your answer-book. 1. (A) Give geographical reasons for the following statements (any two): 1. i. Soil in the middle Ganga plain is formed by deposition of new alluvium year after year, so it is immature. ii. A poor drainage in the Middle Ganga plain causes accumulation of sodium salts in soil that renders the soil infertile. iii. Also the soil in the Middle Ganga plain lacks nitrogen. iv. It needs manure and fertilizers. Hence, soil is infertile and immature in the Middle Ganga plain. 2. i. The Himalayas act as a great climatic divide affecting large systems of air and water circulation. ii. Due to stupendous height and location, the Himalayan range obstructs the passage of cold air from the north entering into India in winter. iii. It also forces the rain-bearing south westerly monsoon winds to give up most of their moisture within the sub-continental part. iv. As a result, heavy precipitation both in the form of rain and snow is seen on the Indian side but the conditions are arid in the Tibet region because it lies under the rain shadow area. 3. i. Rajasthan desert fascinates tourists by providing them an amazing opportunity to enjoy its world famous camel safari. ii. Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur are three historically most popular cities for a tourist to visit in Rajasthan. iii. In addition to the camel safaris, the ecotourism in Rajasthan also includes treks ranging from simple backpacker to plush Arabian night style campsites replete with banquets and cultural performances. iv. During the treks, tourists are able to view the fragile and beautiful ecosystem of the Rajasthan desert. Due to all these reasons, the Rajasthan desert fascinates tourists. 1

Marathi is the main language spoken in the north-western part of Deccan plateau of Maharashtra. iii. Telugu and Kannada are the predominant languages of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka respectively. Hyderabad is an important centre of Urdu language in the Deccan plateau. iv. Tamil is the main language of Tamil adu which is to the south of the Deccan plateau and Malayalam is found to the southwest of the plateau. Thus, it can be said that the Deccan Plateau is a home to many languages. Write short notes on (any two): 1. i. India has a coastline of about 7, 517 km. India is bounded by Arabian sea in the west and southwest. ii. Bay of Bengal is present in the east and southeast of India. Indian ocean is present in the south. iii. Sri Lanka is separated from India by the Gulf of Mannar and narrow channel of the Palk strait. iv. India shares its maritime boundary with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar. 2. i. The Eastern Coastal Plains are some of the most fertile lands in India. Eastern coastal region has mostly young alluvial soil. ii. They have fertile delta regions of rivers Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. iii. Rice is cultivated with three cycles in a year, particularly in the Kaveri Delta area. iv. Rice cultivations are dominant in all the delta regions and adjoining plains between the coast and the Ghats. 3. i. The official language of Punjab is Punjabi. ii. The Punjabi culture is famous for its rich rituals, songs, dances, food and dresses which have evolved over many centuries. iii. The culture appears in the form of music such as bhangra, giddha-dance and its cuisine. Also, the culture is reflected through wedding traditions, ceremonies etc. which state that the culture in Punjab is rich and diverse. iv. The festivals of all religions are celebrated in Punjab. However, festivals like Lohri, Basant, Baisakhi and Teej are a strong reflection of the Punjabi culture. The beautiful collection of architecture of many temples and varied landscape makes the Himalayan district one of the best places to visit on earth. ii. ear one million visitors come to the Himalayas each year for mountain trekking, wildlife viewing and pilgrimages to Hindu and Buddhist sacred places. iii. Treks to the icy summits of Great Himalayas have become popular due to which number of foreign visitors have increased in recent years. The Monasteries in the Trans- Himalayan regions is a sacred place for the Buddhists. iv. Uttarakhand called as Devbhoomi i.e., land of Gods has many sacred pilgrimages of different religions including Haridwar, the Char Dhams-Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Sikh pilgrimage of Hemkund. v. Tourism has been highly boosted by the developed transportation services in the Himalyan region. Major urban centres such as Shimla, Srinagar and other important tourist destinations are connected through railways, air routes and developed roads. vi. All this has drawn pilgrims and expedition in the Himalyan region, which has made tourism a growing industry in the Himalayas. Tamil adu coast is included in eastern coastal plains. This coast is also referred to as Coromandal Coast. ii. It extends from Kanyakumari upto the Krishna delta. 4

5 iii. iv. The coast between Kanyakumari and Rameshwaram Island is bordered by Gulf of Mannar which is known for Pearl Banks. A number of coral reefs are developed in Gulf of Mannar. Gulf of Mannar is also known for its pearl banks. v. The Kaveri Delta in Tamil adu is the most salient feature of the coastal plains. vi. Western Rajasthan faces acute water scarcity due to very low ground water level and lack of water resources such as rivers and canals. [1] ii. iii. iv. To overcome this problem, villagers are encouraged to build and renovate Kunds (tanks), Johads (ponds), Talabs (permanent ponds) and to dig wells. Kunds are structures which have been constructed to harvest rainwater for drinking purpose. Traditional step wells are called bavadis in Rajasthan. A khadin is an ingenious construction designed to harvest surface runoff water for agriculture. It is very long ( m) embankment built across the lower hill slopes lying below gravelly uplands. v. Tankas are small underground tanks found in most houses in Bikaner, either in the main house or in the courtyard for collecting rain water. They were circular holes made in the ground lined with lime. They were beautifully decorated with tiles which kept the water cool and was safe for drinking. 5

6 Board Answer Paper: October 2014 vi. Kuis are deep pits (10-12 m) dug near tanks to collect seepage. They are also used to harvest rainwater in areas with less rainfall. Inflation leads to corruption which reflects in political uncertainties. Thus, inflation has far reaching consequences on an economy. 3. i. Cash Reserve Ratio or CRR refers to the proportion of total deposits which commercial banks have to keep with the central bank. [1] ii. An increase in cash reserve ratio results into lesser availability of credit through banks, which helps to control money supply. [1] 6

7 4. i. A process through which sub-standard ingredients are added to food items to increase its quantity is called food adulteration. [1] ii. Food adulteration adversely affects the health of the society. [1] 5. The main objectives of the Public Distribution System are: i. To provide essential goods to the consumers at reasonable and subsidised prices. [1] ii. To maintain the minimum nutritional status of the population. [1] Q.7. Answer any one of the following questions in five or six sentences: 1. The most common business malpractices followed by sellers are: i. Sale of adulterated goods. ii. Sale of defective goods. iii. The direct measures taken by the government to control inflation are: i. Expansion of domestic output so as to meet the ever increasing demand. ii. Direct control of prices and rationing i.e., bringing down the upper limit beyond which prices would not be allowed to rise. iii. Adopting appropriate wage-profit policy. iv. Publicity campaigns to appeal to the people to control their expenditure. v. Control of population growth. [Any four measures : ½ mark each] 7
