1 Monday, August 30, 1015 World History Lesson Plans Week 4 STANDARDS: Describe the development of civilizations on the Indian Subcontinent. Explain the development of Hinduism in India. QuickWrite on one of the following three topics: A. What are the main geographic and climate features of the Indian Subcontinent? B. How did geography impact the way people lived along the Indus River? C. Describe the characteristics and achievements of early Indus River Valley peoples. Working in partners or small groups, students will begin a SPRITE Analysis of the early Indus civilizations. Student samples will be shared on AirPlay or using the Smart Doc Camera. Quick 5 question assessment (quiz) on the Geography of the Indian Subcontinent and the early Indus Valley peoples of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro (Socrative or NearPod) Discussion: what are fables, parables, and epics. What are the purposes of fables, parables and epics? What are their similarities and differences? Why might some religious texts use the form of fables, epics, and parables? Quick DBQ activity using one of Aesop s fables (Crow & the Pitcher?). Brief Lecture Introducing the Vedic Age and development of Hinduism w/quick check questions embedded (NearPod) Students will add to their TIPE Chart for SSWH2 what they learned today on India.

2 Tuesday, September 1, 2015 Explain the development and impact of Hinduism. Describe the Caste System in India. Examine how Hinduism impacted the Caste System in India. QuickWrite on how is American Society structured? What classes exist? Are these classes flexible or rigid? How can a person change the class to which he/she was born? Debrief Activator. Show/model a social hierarchy chart for a topic familiar to the student. Continue to develop Hinduism with quick check questions embedded (NearPod) DBQ activity from the Ramayana. Read an excerpt from the Ramayana; what lesson does the excerpt teach. 3 Wednesday, September 2, 2015 Explain the development of Buddhism on India. Explain how Buddhism spread beyond India to other parts of Asia. Evaluate why Buddhism became popular in other parts of Asia but Hinduism did not. Create a Venn Diagram comparing the social structure system in the United States with that of India's Caste System. Quiz over the Indo-Aryans, Hinduism, and the Caste System (Socrative) Watch a video on Buddhism and its spread to other parts of Asia. Introduction of Buddhism w/ quick check questions (Near Pod) Model how to analyze a primary source using the HIPP Process. DBQ Activity on Buddhism w/ partner or in small groups. Given a series of short documents on the spread of Buddhism, students will analyze the docments, discuss and develop an outline for an essay on how Buddhism spread beyond India and why it became more popular in China than in the region it originated. Debrief DBQ ideas as a class Build onto the TIPE Chart for SSWH2. Explain the development and impact of Hinduism and Buddhism on India and Explain how Buddhism spread to other parts of Asia. Describe the achievements of the Mauryan Empire, Golden Age of Gupta, and Asoka. Compare and contrast Hinduism and Buddhism by creating a Venn Diagram Have student volunteers display student samples using AirPlay Discuss why Buddhism would be more popular in other parts of Asia than Hinduism (not as rigid class system, blended well with other religions, provided message of hope in this life) Quick review question poll on Buddhism (NearPod) Working in partners/groups, students will create a flow chart on the key features and achievements of the Maurya Empire, Golden Age of Gupta, and the Emperor of Asoka. (Poplet). Show student examples via AirPlay. Discuss and add to students' flow maps if necessary. Reading in the textbook and graphic organizers on key achievements of Ancient India Model note-taking using the Smart Doc Camera or Air Play. Students to complete the graphic organizer then share with a partner. Essential Question/Learning Target: Analyze the role geography played in the development of early China. Activator: Watch video and answer questions on the Geographic Characteristics of China w/discussion questions Ancient China Map Activity (Use Google Earth to explore the different features of China's geography) Examine ways in which geography impacted the development of Ancient China. (NearPod w/ Questions) Explain how geography would impact the culture of Ancient China (Isolation, sense of superiority, belief in animism/nature spirits) by creating an EFFECT diagram (Poplet, Inspiration, etc) Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the geographic features and their impact on the Indus River Valley with that of Ancient China. (partner activity) 5 Quick Review questions on China s geography (NearPod) QW - Write a paragraphy explaining how geogrpahy impacted the cultural development of China (NearPod/Share good responses w/ students).
