The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant, Dehradun (130 Km).The Centre functions under the aegis of Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar Garhwal. The centre runs the following academic courses: 2 year MBA in Tourism and travel Management. 4 year BHM programme 3 year Ph. 3 About the University Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University was established as a State University in The University has subsequently been upgraded to Central University by an Act of Parliament i.e. the Central Universities Act The University has thus been entrusted with new responsibilities to guide its students, faculty and all other stakeholders to achieve excellence in academics and strive for all round development of students. The University has three Campuses distantly located from each other - 1. Birla Campus, Srinagar Garhwal with its extension at Chauras Campus, 2. B. Gopal Reddy Campus, Pauri 3. Swami Ram Teerth Campus, Badshahithaul, Tehri. In all three campuses of the University the undergraduate, post-graduate and research programmes are being offered in different disciplines. Besides, conventional courses under different streams of studies, the University has introduced some regionally relevant courses that are of importance for the region in particular and mountains in general. The university has recognized its academic units by establishing 14 schools of studies out of which 11 are in its campus. In all the university offers 121 UG, PG, Diplomas and certificate programmes/courses in its three campuses, besides Ph. D. programme in 37 disciplines. In the year more than 1.5 lac students were enrolled in the university and affiliated colleges and institutes. Of this, students were enrolled in the university campuses during this period. The university has 49 teaching and research departments under 11 schools. The university has 9 hostels each for boys and girls including higher studies women hostel and research hostel separately for boys and girls. The total strength of faculty is 343 besides 173 part time faculty members.

4 Background of the Workshop The Himalayan states extended from Kashmir to Sikkim are the focal point of tourist attractions be they are holy shrines like Badrinath, Kedernath or scenic attractions of Srinagar, Leh, Shimla, Gangtok, Mussoorie and Darjeeling. Millions of tourists are received here during tourist season and much of the revenue contributed by tourist traffic play a significant role in the economy of respective states. However with the emergence of alternative tourism activities, the states have also become accessible for water and winter sports activities during off season. In view of this the Himalayan states are now accessible round the year and thus more opportunities of business opportunities have been proliferated for the active participation of local people. Surprisingly much of benefits of revenue spent by tourist traffic go to the products produced by multinational companies as well as to the outside professionals running their business at the cost of local people livelihood. Consequence upon such prevailing practices, the local community remain poor, neglected and isolated despite of the increase number of visitors. The major reasons behind this trauma are the lack of professional skills inculcated by local residents as well poor competency among the local people in this fast growing service industry. Aims and Objectives The proposed workshop is aimed to discuss some of the pertaining issues including the followings: a) How to assess the number of visits of tourist and pilgrims? b) What could be the estimated expenditure pattern and average length of stay of tourist traffic? c) What is the nature and scale of local people participation in the existing tourism and hospitality enterprises? d) How to identify environment friendly tourist and pilgrimage circuits? e) How to obtain updated information about the people residing in the surroundings of tourist destinations? f) What could be the nature of proposed environment friendly amenities and facilities? g) What nature of training programmes be incorporated for the entrepreneurship development? h) What nature of methods should be introduced to identify potential manpower for entrepreneurship development? i) How to generate resources to meet the expanses training and development? j) How to select and identify trainers to impart training to the trainees?

5 Who will be participating? (I) Tourism officials of Govt. of J&K Tourism, Hill Council of Ladakh, Himachal Tourism, Uttarakhand Tourism, West Bengal Tourism and Sikkim Tourism. (II) Representatives of financial organizations including of the representatives of Nationalized, Private and Cooperative Banks and Micro Financial companies. (III) Professionals representing Directorate of Industries, ASSOCHAM &CII. (IV) Academicians from Universities, Institutions and Colleges. (V) Representative of local Travel and Hospitality units, Water Sports, Eco-development Committee. Homestay Associations and Non Government Organizations (VI) Students of Degree and Diploma Programmes. Possible Outcome Identifying potential travel circuits and ideal tourist places. Recognizing the present status of job skills and estimating future training requirement Disseminating pertinent information on financial schemes for entrepreneurship development. Suggesting guidelines about the participation of local entrepreneurs.. Identifying useful training agencies in tourism and hospitality trade. Suggesting purposeful modules for the study programmes in tourism and hospitality Management Guidelines for Submission of Papers/Case Studies Papers/Case Studies are invited from academicians, professionals, social workers, entrepreneurs, researchers and students for presentation. The papers/case studies submitted for the workshop should be unpublished and original work of the contributor(s). Full length paper/case study (not more than 5000 words in MS Word Times New Roman, heading font size 14, text font size 12 and 1.5 spacing, APA style for citations and references) should be submitted to the organizing committee through at latest by April 15, 2017 and may be contributed on any one of the following themes: 1. Academia industry linkages The workshop proceedings including selected research papers and articles shall be produced in a printed form with ISBN by May 30 th About Rishikesh Rishikesh situated an an average elevation of 372m from sea level is revered as the gateway for travelling to the Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage destinations of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Hemkund Lokpal and Valley of Flowers. Located on the bank of the River Ganges, Rishikesh has been attracting flocks of saints and sages since time immemorial. The hermitages of Saptarshis and Rajarishis like Sri Ram, Lakshman. Bharat and Shatrughana as well as other ancient rishis, including Sri Sankara and Sri Ramanuja indicate the city s religious significance. Panoramic view of the Ram Jhula in Rishikesh Rishikesh derives its name from an ancient rishi, Rybhia, who made himself the master of his senses (Hrishikesh) at the holy place. The place is also called Kubjamraka, Land of the Bent Mango-tree. According to another legend, Lord Vishnu made himself visible to Rishi Rybhia here on the branch of a mango tree bent under the divine weight. Another legend says that once a fierce fire broke out here. Lord Shiva was angry with Lord Agni for this and cursed him. Lord

7 Agni then prayed here for the expiration of his sins. Hence the city is also known as 'Agni Tirtha' - the holy place of penance by Lord Agni or Fire God. Swami Visudhananda, more familiarly known as Baba Kali Kamli Wale was deeply associated with Rishikesh. Baba Kali Kamli Wale, known by this peculiar name, as he generally used only a piece of black blanket to cover his body. He was an ascetic among ascetics. His life, totally free from acceptance and hoarding of wealth, was a perfect model of innocence and piety. The extensive and efficient arrangement of accommodation in the forms of Dharamshalas that he had made in Rishikesh and other places in the Himalayas for the convenience of pilgrims and tourists is admirable.
