3 Shri Hari Singularity of the Divine Name Repetition न मजपक वल णत Sacrifices, charity, austerities, visiting holy places, fasting etc. are all actions (kriya), but the japa (repetition) of the Divine Name of the Lord is not an action, rather it is a calling. Just as if someone meets a dacoit, and the dacoit begins to rob, beat him, and when we feel helpless in our ability to get away from this situation, we have no strength remaining, and in this helpless condition if we call out, then this calling is not an action. In a calling, there is no faith in one s own capabilities, neither pride of one s own strength. In this the reliance is on the one that you are calling. Therefore in the call, our actions (kriya) are predominant, rather the feeling of mine ness (apnaapan) with God is most important. 3

4 Saints have said ह रय बद व न य, क रय क क प क र Just as when someone is forcefully tied up, then he shouts and calls out, in the same way, one has to call out to Bhagawan, do japa of his Divine Name, then the sense of mine ness will God will manifest. The power that is in this sense of mine ness (i.e. in this relationship with God), that power is not there in sacrifices (yagna), charity, austerities, and the various actions. Therefore, there is singularity in the glory of japa (chanting) of the Divine Name. भ य क भ य अनख आलसह न म जपत क ल द स दसह (म नस, ब ल २८ १) Bhaayam kubhaayam anakha aalasahum naam japata mangal disi dasahum (Manas, Baalkaand, Doha 28/1) The Name repeated either with good or evil intentions, mood or even while yawning, spreads joy in all the ten directions. in an angry In whichever way, as one continues to do Naam Japa (Divine Name repetition), exceptional singularity (vilakshantaa) manifests. But, if the chanting of the Divine Name is done with feeling, with understanding, then very quickly one can attain to Absoluteness 4

5 स दर स मरन ज नर करह भव ब र ध ग पद इव तरह (म नस, ब ल ११९ २) "Saadar sumiran je nar karhin. Bhav baaridhi gopad iva tarahi." (Manasa 1:119:2) It means that by repeating the Divine Name with feelings and sentiments, and with intense longing and devotion, he crosses the ocean of life on His own and the eternal union with God becomes evident. Just as on feeling thirsty, one remember water, then that remembering is also a form of water, in the same way, the remembrance of God is also God s very own aspect. Due to being insentient, the water does not want the thirsty one, but Bhagawan naturally wants the jeev ; because, the anshi (God) has natural love for His ansh (jeev). A well, does not go towards the thirsty, rather, the thirsty one goes towards the well. But, God Himself comes to His devotees. In reality, wherever the devotee remembers God, there God is present from the very beginning! 5

6 Therefore remembering God, repeating His Divine Name is not an action kriyaa. Actions are the activity of Nature, but Naam japa (Divine Name repetition), is beyond Nature. In fact, the Upaasak, the worshipper (devotee, one repeating the Divine Name) and the Upaasya, the one being worshipped both are beyond Nature. Therefore with Divine Name japa, he himself turns towards God; because the calling is of the Self (swayam), not of the mind intellect. Therefore Naam Japa is gunateet (beyond the modes of Nature). Whether worldly or spiritual actions performed, are through the insentient jada only. But when the aim is of the sentient God (Paramatma), that insentient action also takes one towards the sentient (chetan) कम च व तदथ य स द य व भध यत 6

7 (ग त १७ २७) "karma chaiva tadarthiyam sadityevabhidhiyate" (Gita 17/27). Whatever is done for God, all becomes "sat" (existence, real, truth), such as, Japa, meditation, chanting His holy name. Wherever our attention is, there itself we will go. If the aim is God, then the actions in the form of warfare too will become the means to God Realization. Not only that, when the aim and focus is on the sentient, the insentient (jada, inert) also becomes sentient. Just like, Only God is mine, there is none other. In this manner, by doing bhajan and becoming God s, Meerabai s inert body too became sentient, and it merged in God s Divine form! Therefore, even though actions are insentient, but the aim should not be insentient (enjoyment of pleasures and hoarding). It is written in the scriptures, that the Divine Name has such immense power to destroy sins, that even the worst of worst sins do not stand a chance to survive! That power is in calling out to the Lord Oh My Lord! Oh My Prabhu!. In this, the words are communicated through outward 7

8 speech, and actions, but the Oh! comes from within, from the Self. The voice that comes from within, that voice has power. That power is His, who is being called out. Just as a child cries and calls out to his Maa, then He has a deep inner bonding with his Maa. Therefore the mother cannot wait, she is unable to do any other work. In the same way, if one repeats the Divine Name with a true heart, then God cannot wait. He leaves all His other work and comes! It means, there is an exceptional and singular power in Naam Japa, by which man will quickly attain his supreme good (kalyaan). When Dushaashan began to grab hold of Draupadi s sari and disrobe her, Draupadi called out to the Lord, ग व द व रक व सन क ण ग प जन य On hearing the call, God appeared. But he was slightly delayed in coming; because Draupadi called out for Dwarkavaasi, so the Lord had to first go to Dwarka, and then come to her. If she had not said Dwarkavaasi then, it would not be even the slightest bit of delay. God would appear immediately! 8

9 There was a devotee of Lord Krishna, and another who was a devotee of Lord Ram. Both called out to their beloved, at which time Lord Krishna appeared immediately, but Lord Ram was much delayed in coming. The reason being that Lord Ram is र ज धर ज. It takes some time for a king s carriage to come, but for a cowherd boy, where can there be a delay? A cowherd boy has nothing to prepare for his arrival. Such are the feelings and sentiments of a devotee. I had met a gentleman in Ayodhya. He used to keep a picture of Ramlala (Lord Ram as a child) with him. He said I worship the Lord in the form of a child. I am afraid to worship Lord Ram as a powerful king, thinking that if some mistake is committed in front of a king, then immediately He will imprison me! But I can even scold this childlike Ram, I can even slap Him! These are the sentiments and feelings of devotees. If man does not consider Naam Japa to be an ordinary activity, and instead sees it as a sincere call out to the Lord, his work will be completed in no time, and love of God, remembrance of God will be awakened. It is due to attachment to the world the Divine Love of God is hidden. By calling out to God, this Divine Love will manifest. न र यण! न र यण!! न र यण!!!
