Lord s Day April 15, 2018 FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org
Lord s Day April 15, 2018 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation s preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude God of Grace and God of Glory (Cwm Rhondda)...arr. Paul Manz ( ) Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer O Almighty God, from whom every good prayer comes, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in Spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God God Shall Arise (Psalm 68:16) +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer We, O Lord, have been a stiffnecked people who love unfaithfulness. We have loved other gods before you and become their servants. We have not worshipped you in spirit and in truth and so we have mocked your glory in heaven. We have used your name in vain and profaned your reputation on earth. We have desecrated your Sabbath because we have not trusted you to give us rest. We have not honored our fathers and mothers and so we have proved ourselves rebels. We have hated our neighbors and murdered them in our hearts. We have made adulterers of ourselves in the lust of our eyes or in the deeds of our flesh. We have stolen honor and wealth and privileges that are not ours. We have lied and falsely accused for we love gossip more than truth. We have coveted blessings you wisely and righteously gave to others. O Lord, have mercy on us for we have not kept your law. In Jesus Name, Amen. Assurance of Pardon The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. Exodus 34:67 (ESV)
*Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness No. 520 *Confession of Faith Q. No one in this life can obey the Ten Commandments perfectly: why then does God want them preached so pointedly A. First, so that the longer we live the more we may come to know our sinfulness and the more eagerly look to Christ for forgiveness of sins and righteousness. Second, so that, while praying to God for the grace of the Holy Spirit, we may never stop striving to be renewed more and more after God s image, until after this life we reach our goal: perfection. Heidelberg Catechism No. 115 Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Variation on Freu dich serh, o meine Seele Johann Pachelbel ( ) We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you, we kneel and adore you; We bless your holy name, glad praises we sing. With voices united our praises we offer, To you, great Jehovah, glad anthems we raise. Your strong arm will guide us, our God is beside us; To you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise. Julia Cady Cory (1902) Tune: Kremser *Congregational Petitions and the Lord s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:913 (KJV) Scripture Lesson Exodus 20:117 (ESV p. 61) Sermon The Ten Commandments The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request.
You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. My Father, I could never have sought my happiness in your love, unless you had first loved me. Your Spirit has encouraged me by grace to seek you, has made known to me your reconciliation in Jesus, has taught me to believe it, has helped me to take you for my God and portion. May he grant me to grow in the knowledge and experience of your love, and walk in it all the way to glory. Blessed forever be your fatherly affection, which chose me to be one of your children by faith in Jesus: I thank you for giving me the desire to live as such. In Jesus, my brother, I have my new birth, every restraining power, every renewing grace. It is by your Spirit I call you Father, believe in you, love you; strengthen me inwardly for every purpose of my Christian life; let the Spirit continually reveal to me my interest in Christ, and open to me the riches of your love in him. Amen. Jesus, Sun of Life, my splendor, Jesus, thou, my friend most tender, Jesus, joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring, At thy feet I cry, my Maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessed food from heaven, For our good, thy glory, given. Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray thee, Let me gladly here obey thee, By thy love I am invited, Be thy love with love requited; From this supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love s treasure. Through the gifts thou here dost give me As thy guest in heaven receive me. J. Franck/G. F. Handel Hymn Teach Me, O Lord, Thy Holy Way No. 532 Reading of Scripture 1 John 4:712, 1319 (ESV p. 1023) *Hymn That Man Is Blest Who, Fearing God (Psalm 1) No. 558
*Benediction +Silent Prayer Grant us, Lord, we beg you, to think and do what is right; so that we, who cannot do anything good without you, may be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Postlude Lord, speak to me, that I may speak In living echoes of thy tone; As thou hast sought, so let me seek Thine erring children lost and lone. O teach me, Lord, that I may teach The precious things thou dost impart; And wing my words, that they may reach The hidden depths of many a heart. Amen. Explanation of the Cover Symbol In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek Jesus, XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, Christ; NIKA means He conquers. The symbol then reads Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross or Jesus Christ Victor.
