2 Page 2 A Message from Lay Director, Dee Wilkins Dear VDC Community, Happy New Year from your SCVDC Secretariat, and best wishes to each of you for a very happy Let me introduce myself. I am Dee Wilkins and was recently elected Lay Director for I attend Messiah Lutheran Church in Mauldin, South Carolina. I attended Co-Ed weekend #13 in the fall of 2013 where I sat at the table of Elizabeth. It has been an honor to serve on your Secretariat for the past two years. This will be the third year of my three-year term. We are already looking forward to 2018 Fall Weekend #17 on September This year we will be returning to the Nazarene Camp. Rectora Gretchen Neff has been making preparations since she was chosen in early October. She has filled many of the team slots but is still taking applications. You can find a copy of the Team Application elsewhere in this newsletter as well as on the SC VdC website. On Saturday, February 17, Messiah Lutheran Church, Mauldin, SC, will host our spring Ultreya. Check out the flyer in this newsletter for more information. All of us at Messiah hope you will join us for a day of spiritual inspiration, songs, food, fun and fellowship. In 2017, your Secretariat began working on a plan to have an ambassador in each congregation who would coordinate with the Secretariat communications person (currently Michelle Leonard with assistance from Jerry Bode) in order to get information to cursillistas throughout the state on a timely basis. This Ambassador would also facilitate finding a reunion group in their church VdC community for new Pilgrims. We will continue to work on this in We appreciate any suggestions you as a member of the SCVdC Community might have for the Secretariat. Also, please keep Secretariat members in your prayers as we continue our work in Your Sister in Christ, Dee Wilkins Lay Director

3 A Message from the Rectora of Via de Cristo # 17 Volume 5, Issue 1 Page 3 Greetings and Happy New Year brothers and sisters in Christ! I hope your holidays were blessed, and if they were difficult for you, I pray that you had friends to see you through. You know God is always with you. Can you believe we are only 8 months away from our Fall Weekend? What? you say. Why is she talking about this already? you say. I can easily give you two reasons. First, I am so excited to serve as your Rectora. The team I have assembled, though not complete, is top-notch. Second, it is never too early to start praying for the weekend, for God to lead you to Pilgrims to sponsor, and for hearing His call to serve. I am beyond thrilled by the number of new Cursillistas who have given their support to both me and Via de Cristo in their willingness to serve. In addition, many, many thanks to the tried and true who have answered God s call. There are still positions to fill, including a male Spiritual Director. (Hint, hint Pastors.) As a reminder, the weekend is September 27 September 30. 4 Page 4 My SC Via de Cristo Experience SC Via de Cristo Weekend September 28 - October 1, 2018 Have you heard the term Via de Cristo? Have you heard the term Ultreya? Have you heard about reunion groups? Has your curiosity been peeked just a little here and there? Are you wondering if you are missing out on something? From personal experience, I can say, without a doubt, that I was in the dark regarding the Via de Cristo weekend. Then, at a Messiah gathering, I happened to sit beside Barbara Weaver who asked me if I had attended a weekend. I told her that I had not. From there, it was an explosion of excitement from Barbara. She said it was a wonderful experience and if I ever wanted to go, she would gladly be my sponsor. She went on to say that it was a tremendous life changing point in her Christian growth. Enough said! I wanted to go. This article originally appeared in the SC Synod E-newsletter on January 10, It was written for an audience larger than just SC cursillistas. I attended a Via de Cristo weekend last fall. It started on a Thursday with Barbara picking me up and taking me to Messiah where I (along with five others) boarded a bus and headed for Camp Kinard. From there, my life was in the hands of God as I began my weekend. First of all, let me clarify that it is not a cult; nor is it a weekend to convert someone to Christianity. It is simply a program that builds on and forever enriches your spiritual growth. There are no big secrets about the Via de Cristo weekend. There are fourteen talks given by both pastors and lay people. There are discussions. There are activities. There are some intense moments and many moments of laughter. So, I m asking YOU: Have you attended a weekend? That one question put me on the road to a life changing experience which I will never forget. It strengthened my love of Jesus Christ and made me realize that in the tapestry of life, every thread is different and God is the world s designer. For those who have attended a Via de Cristo weekend and for those who are interested in learning more, the next Ultreya will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1100 Log Shoals Road, in Mauldin on February 17 from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. If you are wondering what an Ultreya is, an Ultreya is sharing and communicating our common faith. It is the life of the Christian in harmony with the life of grace, which is a part of our daily life. It is living the same normality that was lived at the Cursillo (Via de Cristo) weekend, nothing more and nothing less. We hope to see you there! Written by Beth Fulmer
