2 Church of the Holy Name / St Leonard of Port Maurice Minneapolis Page 2 29 th Sunday - Fr Leo Because of his afflic on he shall see the light of fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall jus fy many, and their guilt he shall bear (Is 53:11) For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mk 10:45) The last sentences of our first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, and the last sentence of our Gospel passage from Mark, have parallel themes Prophe cally speaking of Jesus, and all future servants of God, Isaiah teaches that God s servant is one who through suffering will save others from their guilt This is fulfilled in Jesus Christ who through his sufferings bore or guilt for all me Jesus modeled redemp ve suffering and teaches his disciples that they too are to be concerned about raising others up to God, and not about their own earthly glory This is made clear when James and John come to Jesus and ask him, or more accurately, tell Jesus that they want him to do for them whatever they ask Jesus humbly asks what they want When their power grab becomes obvious the others became indignant That could have been out of their own desire for power and importance Then Jesus teaches them all that the greatest is the one who serves, who gives his life for others What Jesus asks of his disciples is what he asks of each of us We are to give our lives for the salva on of others This is difficult because it goes against our natural grain Only with God s grace will we be able to live with the humility needed to love others when they hurt us so that they may come to see their weakness and come to a change of heart Being defensive, even when jus fied, isn t always the best thing to do At mes, in the bigness of heart, inspired by grace, we will let things go, understanding that the other will come to see things differently more quickly on their own than if we always challenge them For example: an abusive person may come to the realiza on of their nas ness by the isola on they create for themselves, than by being challenged every step of the way when they aren t ready to receive God s grace This is making a personal sacrifice that doesn t feel good at the me, for a greater good The same experience Jesus had dying on the cross for us But we must also remember what Isaiah said, Because of his afflic on he shall see the light of fullness of days Just as Jesus was raised up, we to will be raised up with him When we share in Jesus - con nued con nued redemp ve suffering, we also come to share in the fullness of his light and joy, now and forever Lord, inspire us with a healthy humility, that we may make your love known Then your kingdom will come on earth as it is forever in heaven May all peoples come to live in your light and joy for ever and ever Amen!
