1 ARE YOU PREPARED FOR MPD? Here are some general ways to prepare spiritually, relationally, and financially for MPD. On the back you'll find a more detailed checklist of what Every Nation is looking for in our new full-time missionary staff. This is meant to guide conversation with local leaders and help set preparedness goals together.
3 Every Nation s Church-Based Campus Ministry Model The goal of this document is to clarify for pastors, campus missionaries, and Every Nation s Nashville office what we mean by church-based campus ministry. Over the years, this term was often defined by what it s not rather than what it is. We don t do campus ministry as a parachurch organization like Cru, InterVarsity, or The Navigators, which operate independently of local churches. But we also don t do campus ministry solely as an outreach of our local churches either. Here s what these two models look like in the areas of funding, identity, and authority: THE PARACHURCH MODEL The campus missionary s funding comes from his or her own efforts to develop a team of financial partners, and the pool of potential ministry partners is unlimited. The campus missionary s identity and the identity of the campus ministry chapter come from the organization that he or she is a part of and represents. The campus missionary s authority structure comes from the organization he or she is a part of and represents, and the organization controls the job description and day-to-day activities. THE CHURCH-CENTERED MODEL The campus missionary s funding, like any other church staff member, comes from the local church, and is limited by the church s budget. The campus missionary s identity and the identity of the campus ministry chapter come from his or her local church. Campus ministry is another department of the local church. The campus missionary s authority structure comes from the local church, and the pastor controls the job description and day-to-day activities. Because we re a church-planting movement, we decided long ago that we didn t want to use the Parachurch Model, but we also made two strategic decisions that distanced us from the Church-Centered Model. We chose to use deputized fundraising so missionaries had an unlimited pool of potential ministry partners, thus enabling us to rapidly expand the number of campus missionaries. We also chose to use a common brand, Every Nation Campus, for national and international recognition. Those decisions created a hybrid model a model we call Church- Based Campus Ministry. Here s how funding, identity, and authority work in our model: OUR CHURCH-BASED MODEL The campus missionary s funding is a partnership between Every Nation Campus and the local church. Every Nation Campus is responsible to train, coach, and resource the campus missionary to be successful in deputized fundraising and Ministry Partnership Development. The local church is responsible to partner at some level with the campus missionary and allow some safe level of partnership development within the church. The campus missionary s identity and the identity of the campus ministry chapter is a partnership between Every Nation Campus and the local church. Every Nation Campus is responsible to create, promote, and maintain the ENC brand identity. The local church is responsible to support this effort as the campus missionary (also a faithful church member) helps build the church by bringing students. The campus missionary s authority is a partnership between Every Nation Campus and the local church. Every Nation Campus is the legal employer of the campus missionary, and therefore must exercise general supervision and control through ministry assignments, job descriptions, hiring, firing, performance evaluations, etc. These responsibilities are always conducted in partnership with local church leadership. The local church is responsible to supervise the day-to-day activities of the campus missionary as he or she works to fulfill the responsibilities defined in the job description.
4 To help create even more clarity about our Church-Based Campus Ministry Model, here are ten points for how this model works in practice. 1. As employees of Every Nation, campus missionaries are subject to established Pay Grades and salaries, which are set according to his or her roles, responsibilities, seniority, and performance. Each campus missionary s compensation and Minimum Monthly Support Goal are submitted to that missionary s Ministry Assignment Leader (MAL) at the local church for review and approval. 2. Pastors understand and agree that Ministry Partnership Development (MPD) is a biblical and time-tested fundraising method that provides campus missionaries with financial resiliency for vocational ministry. 3. The local church financially partners with its campus missionaries by one, some, or all of the following options: (1) becoming a monthly ministry partner through Every Nation, (2) creating a safe framework that allows the campus missionary to develop ministry partners within the local church, and/or (3) providing some portion of the campus missionary s expenses to attend Every Nation conferences and events. 4. Every Nation Campus develops, trains, coaches, and resources campus missionaries so they can do their jobs well. 5. Every Nation Campus representatives attend an Every Nation School of Campus Ministry and adhere to Every Nation Campus job descriptions. This approach applies to all Every Nation Campus representatives, whether funded through Every Nation s MPD program or through the local church. 6. Every Nation Campus is responsible for creating, promoting, and maintaining its global brand standards as decided by the International Apostolic Team. 7. The local church pastor and leadership oversee the direction of the local campus chapter and its campus missionaries according to Every Nation Campus job descriptions and strategic goals. 8. The local church pastor and leadership release Every Nation Campus missionaries-in-training from ministry-related activities so they can successfully focus on building their initial partnership teams. Every Nation Campus, in partnership with the local church pastor and leadership, sets, monitors, and communicates progress during a reasonable time frame for this initial MPD effort. 9. Every Nation Campus missionaries coordinate their annual MPD maintenance season with their local church pastor and leadership and with their Every Nation Campus regional leader. Together, they set an appropriate time period to achieve the agreed-upon MPD goals. 10. As the employer, Every Nation has legal responsibility for hiring, assigning, evaluating, promoting, disciplining, and firing its employees. However, recognizing our Church-Based Campus Ministry model, all of these decisions are made in partnership with the local church pastor and leadership.
5 Every Nation Campus Day Challenge Details Upon graduating from ENC s School of Ministry (SOM), each missionary-in-training (MIT) will be challenged to develop most or all of their initial partnership team within the first 100 days. This initial march toward full funding will be called the 100 Day Challenge. The 100 Day Challenge will consist of focused MPD coaching, weekly local meetings and four webinars (one every 25 days) hosted by the MPD department. Two 50 day overtimes will be available, if needed, for a maximum MPD timeline of 200 days. The goal of this challenge is to create the best start possible for the MIT to develop a fully funded partnership team through Every Nation Ministries within a clear time frame. COACHING COHORTS MITs will be partnered together in a cohort that will meet as a group every two weeks. These meetings (whether in person or digital) will be scheduled prior to graduation from the SOM. Each cohort will be committed to meeting together and cheering each other forward until every cohort member has completed the building of their initial team or exits. SUPERCOACHES Each region has a designated MPD "Super-coach". The Super-coach will serve as the primary local MPD resource for MIT s. One Super-coach will lead each regional cohort while providing seasoned MPD insights and understanding for application on a personal level. Super coaches will also be responsible to report to local senior staff and bring in additional support when necessary. CAMPUS DIRECTORS Campus Directors will serve as the local coach for veteran missionaries that have completed their initial team. As a part of their job description, each campus director will check in with their MIT(s) weekly until the new missionary has deployed to their ministry assignment with a full partnership team. However, in light of ongoing campus related responsibilities, campus directors may limit their coaching to simple encouragement, basic accountability and the regular application of successful MPD principles provided through the initial and ongoing MPD trainings.
