To know that God has a plan to save me from sin and that with Him, I can fight sin Revision of Salvation History, encouragement to go for Reconciliation Timeline, golden ribbon, 3 title cards for Creation, Redemption and Parousia Picture cards: Adam and Even with serpent eating fruit, picture of crucifix with light, picture of baptism garment, Symbol of Reconciliation, symbol of Parousia Word cards: (see text in red below) (timeline is unrolled) Today we re going to look closer at sin. What do you understand by sin? What does it mean? (response) We re going to look again at the stories of creation we ve heard before and see what they tell us about sin. I have some cards here that will help us think about this. (distribute cards) As we re going to be reading from the Bible, we light a candle that reminds us of the first spark of creation. (light candle) What are the 3 great moments in the history of God s Kingdom? (Creation, Redemption, Parousia) Who has the cards for these 3 moments? (Invite children to bring up Slides 2-4. Place these cards at intervals by leaving some space for other cards between them) When did sin first enter our history? (with Adam and Eve s disobedience) Page 1

2 Let s look at the first part here. We re going to look at this account of Adam and Eve s disobedience. (get young people to each take a verse: Gen 2:15-17, 3:1-24) Catechist recaps bible verses (Slide 5-7) Who has a picture of the disobedience of Adam and Eve? (Invite child to bring up Slide 8) What was the result of that disobedience? (response e.g. shame, death, pain, banishment etc ) Who has a card about that? Invite child to read Slide 9 and bring up card (When our ancestors sinned by eating of the tree, the harmony which they had with each other and creation was broken. Because of man, suffering, illness and death entered the world. The man and woman also become aware that they were naked. This means they were stripped of their dignity as God s children.) So now we re going to look further, we re going to try to answer this question: How can we fight sin today? What do you think? How can we fight sin today? (response) We re going to look at how this account of sin (indicate Adam and Eve picture) connects to this moment of Redemption (indicate redemption) and, how it links to the moment of Parousia.(indicate Parousia) Remember how we talked about a mysterious thread that has bound all these events together? (unroll ribbon from creation to Redemption) So we re again going to look for patterns that show us something about God s plan. And so that might help us think about what God is saying to us and how we fit in with this plan. What is the next great moment in history? (Redemption) What happened at Redemption? (Jesus died and rose) Who has a picture that goes with it? (crucifix) Invite child to bring up Slide 10 - crucifix What can you see shining out? (light) God s light shining out at that great moment. Remember the apostle Paul spoke of Adam (indicate creation Adam) but he also talks about a new Adam. Let s turn to I Corinthians15: (get someone to read) Catechist recaps Page 2

3 bible verses (Slide 11) Who is the new Adam? (Jesus) We ve read that in this account of sin, death came into our history through the first Adam. What about the second Adam? What did the second Adam do? (He gave us life) Does anyone have a card about this? (Invite child to bring up Slide 12 and place next to picture of crucifix) (Read: The risen Christ is the new, heavenly Adam who dies on the wood of the cross in order to rise and conquer death forever.) How do we share in this new life? (baptism) Does anyone have a picture of baptism? (Invite child to bring up Slide 13 Baptism) Who has a card about this? Invite child to bring up Slide 14 & place next to pix of Baptism (Read: In baptism we are clothed in Christ; we die to sin and become new creatures.) So through baptism, death no longer has a hold over us. We receive the life of Christ. Before we come to the next moment, there is a card that tells us about the history that all of us are writing together with God now and tomorrow. Who has this card? (blank page) Invite child to bring up Slide 15 blank page this is where we can write our own stories (response e.g. our own struggle with sin, how Christ helps us) What gift has Christ given us to help us in our fight with sin? (Reconciliation) Just as our ancestors lost the original harmony they had when they sinned, we too may fall away from God when we sin seriously after baptism. Jesus gave us the Sacrament of Reconciliation to put us back in harmony with God and each other. Jesus gave us this Sacrament through Peter, the first leader of the church. Let s turn to Mt 16:18-19 (get young person to read) Catechist recaps bible verses (Slide 16) Does anyone have a card on this? Words on Sacrament of Reconciliation - Invite child to bring up Slide 17 (Read: Page 3

4 In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God forgives our sins and restores our relationship with Him and each other. Once again, we pass from death to life. ) Now we come to this last moment in sacred history Parousia. Parousia is the moment that will bring the history of the kingdom of God to a conclusion when God will all in all, when His kingdom will be established forever. Who has a card with a scripture about Parousia? Invite child to bring up Slide 18 (Read: Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. ) What does this tell us about the effect of sin? (there will be no more death, we will be restored to harmony with creation and God) (roll out ribbon to the end) We know that Parousia will come when God will be all in all, and the Kingdom of God will be established and death will be destroyed forever. Looking at this timeline, can you see any patterns that help us understand the plan of God and our place in the plan of God? Discuss e.g.: Life and death Death through Adam, Life through Christ, death conquered at Parousia. Life given at baptism and Reconciliation Light and darkness - Light at creation, Christ is the Light stronger than death, the Light shines over all the earth. Death is darkness of the tomb. Light we receive at baptism, Easter vigil Liturgy of Light that overcomes darkness Creation - new things are made, we are made a new creation in baptism and creation is restored at Parousia Creation of perfect world, Jesus is perfect man and world will be perfected at Parousia - that really helps us think about how God works. What does it tell about us and how Page 4

5 we respond? What is he asking of us? (God made us perfect, Jesus will make us perfect through the sacraments and we will be made perfect again at Parousia.) So we can see there are many connections. I wonder how we can come closer to this moment of Parousia? How can we be filled more with the life and light of the Lord? (response) There s a song we can sing that reminds us that God has a plan and one day He will be all in all. Song: You are my all in all (Slide 19 Song) Wonder Questions What do you understand by sin? What does it mean? I wonder how we can come closer to this moment of Parousia?
