SATURDAY OF THE TWENTY-SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME October 6, 2018 Cameron Davidson INTRODUCTION --- from The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu (Canto20) Leave off fine learning! End the nuisance Of saying yes to this and perhaps to that, Distinctions with how little difference! Categorical this, categorical that, What slightest use are they! If one man leads, another must follow, How silly that is and how false! Yet conventional men lead an easy life With all their days feast days, A constant spring visit to the Tall Tower, While I am a simpleton, a do-nothing, Not big enough yet to raise a hand, Not grown enough to smile, A homeless, worthless waif. Men of the world have a surplus of goods, While I am left out, owning nothing. What a booby I must be Not to know my way round, What a fool! The average man is so crisp and so confident That I ought to be miserable Going on and on like the sea, Drifting nowhere. All these people are making their mark in the world, While I, pig-headed, awkward, Different from the rest, Am only a glorious infant still nursing at the breast. DOXOLOGY O Lord open my lips, And my mouth shall proclaim your praise Glory be to the father And to the son And to the Holy Spirit As always before So now and evermore Amen. Halleluiah.
FIRST READING --- from The Cloud of Unknowing And if ever you come to this cloud, and make a home there and take up the work of love as I urge you, there is something else you must do as this cloud is above you, and between you and your God, you must put a cloud of forgetting beneath you, between you and all the creatures that have ever been made. The cloud of unknowing will perhaps leave you with a feeling that you are far from God. But I assure you, if it is authentic, only the absence of a cloud of forgetting between you and all creatures keeps you from God. SECOND READING --- JB 42: 1-3; 5,6;12-17 Job answered the LORD and said: I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered. I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know. I had heard of you by word of mouth, but now my eye has seen you. Therefore I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes. Thus the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones. For he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she-asses. And he had seven sons and three daughters, of whom he called the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Kerenhappuch. In all the land no other women were as beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; and he saw his children, his grandchildren, and even his great-grandchildren. Then Job died, old and full of years. 2.
THIRD READING --- from The Mystical Doctrine of St. John of the Cross The soul must be in darkness like a blind man, leaning on the obscure faith, and taking it for its light and guide; not trusting to anything it understands, tastes, feels, or imagines for all this is darkness, and faith is above all understanding, taste and sense If the soul be not blind herein it will never reach to those higher things which faith teaches. A blind man, if he be not totally blind, will not commit himself wholly to his guide, but because he sees a little he thinks a certain road secure, not seeing another which is better No knowledge and no conceptions in this mortal life can serve as proximate means of the high union of the love of God. All that the understanding may comprehend; all that the will may be satisfied with; and all that the imagination may conceive, is most unlike unto God, and most disproportionate to Him The less a soul understands, the further does it enter into the night of the spirit, through which it has to pass in order to be united with God, in a way that surpasses all understanding. RESPONSORIAL R. Lord, let your face shine upon us. Because you have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you: You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you In the sweat of your face you shall eat BREAD until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust and to dust you shall return. R. When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, What is it? For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, It is the BREAD the LORD has given you to eat. R. And the tempter said to him, If you are the Son of God, commend these stones to become loaves of bread. But he answered, It is written Man shall not live by BREAD alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. R. And he took BREAD, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. R. 3.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL READING---LK 10: The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Thanks be to God. At that very moment he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, For although you have hidden these things From the wise and the learned, You have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, And who the Father is except the Son And anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him. Turning to the disciples in private he said, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see, For I say to you, Many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, But did not see it, And to hear what you hear, but did not hear it. The word of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. DISCUSSION INTERCESSIONS Rejoicing in the glorious works of God, let us pray for all who suffer and all who rejoice. Lord, have mercy. 4.
For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the holy congregations of God, for a world of mutual acceptance, free of categorization and judgement, and for the unity of all. Christ, have mercy. For this holy gathering and for those who enter with faith, reverence, and love of God, that we may carry our spirituality out into the world. Lord, have mercy. For all those in thrall of an increasingly vain, venal, and vulgar world, that we continue to find the strength to model civic compassion and civility, especially to the young and the gullible. Christ, have mercy. For the world and its leaders, all nations and their people, in fervent hope that increasingly women and enlightened men will assume positions of power, in governments and in the world s religions. Lord have mercy. For all those in danger and in need: the suffering and the oppressed, especially women and children, migrants and prisoners, those struggling with addiction and mental illness, the dying and the dead. Christ have mercy. For ourselves, our families, and all those we love. (And for ) Lord have mercy. We pray for the intercession of Mary as we recite this 12 th century prayer to the Divine Feminine, the Salve Regina or Hail Holy Queen: Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy upon us. And after this, our exile, show unto us the fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. BREAD BREAKING PRAYER God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God our Creator. It is right to give God thanks and praise. 5.
May this bread we pass remind us of all that nourishes and sustains us, and the unbounded generosity nature bestows upon us each day. May this bread we share awaken us to the suffering of those who share not, who are loved not, and who live without community, family or care each day. May this bread we consume bind us together as one, deepening in us the resolve to live now with the passion of nonviolent love, consummated in our breath, our speech, and our action today and every day. At this meal which we share in the name of Jesus, we hear once more your pledge of life which will never come to an end. And so we sing: Santo, santo, santo es el Señor. Hosana en las alturas. Bendito es el que viene en nombre el Señor. We remember Jesus with his friends while they were at supper. He took bread, blessed it and gave it to his friends saying: Take this, all of you, and eat: you are my body. In the same way, he took the cup, filled with wine. He blessed it and gave it to his friends saying: Take this, all of you and drink; this is the cup of the new and everlasting covenant. You are my promise. Thus we together become Jesus. We form his body, seen by others. We become one, present in this moment. We together grow in maturity in the expression, the revelation of who we are, each one, together. God, we ask that we may hear your call, to proclaim, to celebrate the good news: so that we may go out and bear your message in our lives.
Recognizing Jesus, as did the disciples of Emmaus, in the breaking of the bread, we pray as Jesus taught us in this translation of the original Aramaic prayer: O Birther! Father-Mother of the Cosmos, Focus your light within us-- make it useful: Create your reign of unity now-- Your one desire then acts with ours, as in all light, so in all forms. Grant what we need each day in bread and insight. Loose the cords of mistakes binding us, as we release the strands we hold of others guilt. Don t let surface things delude us, But free us from what holds us back. From you is born all ruling will, the power and the life to do, the song that beautifies all, from age to age it renews. Truly--power to these statements-- may they be the ground from which all my actions grow: Amen. Let us now share this bread and cup, giving thanks for all that holds us together in our humanity, that binds us to all who live and have lived, who have cried and are crying, who long for justice and peace, and who rejoice in God s gift of new hope. COMMUNION SONG --- In the Breaking of the Bread (#336) SILENT REFLECTION MEDITATION --- from a blog by Sister Mary Colombiere of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart Los Angeles We have entered into a wordless prayer, an awareness of the Divine Guest within, not through the use of the intellect but through a knowing loving, a deep communion with the Triune God. It is a prayer of quiet calmness in which we drink deeply at the life-giving fount. There are different intensities within this prayer but the way of experiencing and the passion of the experiences will vary 7.

Bowing, he put forward the question that he had been wrestling with for as long as he could remember: Tell me, he said, does my dog have a soul? Zhaouzhou looked at the dog, then back to the pilgrim, and gave his reply: No. CLOSING PRAYER Glory to the triune God In whom we live and move and have our being. The God who is, who was And who is to come. Amen. And, may God bless us and keep us. May God s face shine upon us. May God be gracious to us, and grant to us, and to all our broken world, peace. May the blessing of Almighty God, the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, come upon us and remain with us forever. Amen. CLOSING SONG --- Ripple 8.
Ripple Grateful Dead If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care, Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow Reach out your hand if your cup be empty. If your cup is full may it be again. Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home Songwriters: Jerome J. Garcia / Robert C. Hunter
