1 News of June 2018 Perú Our Congregation is a community of religious that responds to the Lord by the public profession of the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience with the finality of living for Jesus and the people. (C7) Dear Sisters, With the celebration of the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul and the Day of the Pope, as part of the Peruvian church we remember of the significance of the visit of Pope Francis to Peru, and the task that he gave us to work for unity among all Peruvians. The Pope invested Bishop Pedro Barreto as a new cardinal in Peru. This filled us with joy, thanksgiving and hope. In the Vice Province we celebrated with joy the final vows of our sister Agripina Morales. The commitment to give her life for the love of God and the dear neighbor without distinction as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet is also a renovation of our own commitment, calling us to be even more generous in our service of those most in need. We join in prayer for our sisters and the people of the United States for the celebration of their Independence Day. That God continue blessing them in this new year. We will leave the Center House at 8.30 am. There will be mobility for everyone. * July 31st and August 1st we will have the presentation of Mary McGlone about the History of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the United States in the Center House. WELCOME, SISTERS * June 13th Rosa Orellana arrived in Peru. It is a pleasure to have you with us. * July 27th we will be welcoming representatives of the Familia de San José de Chile. They are Ángela Pérez y María Araya from Talca, Dalila Sandoval and Guacolda Saavedra from Curepto. * July 29th Mary McGlone will arrive for the CSJ days. * August 1st we will be receiving the visit of our sisters Teresa Ávalos y Teresa Kvale. 1

2 PERPETUAL VOWS OF OUR SISTER AGRIPINA (Pina) MORALES We thank God for the life and consecration of Pina in our Congregation. The celebration began with a delicious breakfast and, a bit later, a dinner together with some people invited by Pina. Then we went to Brisas de Villa for the Eucharistic celebration. It was a special celebration in the midst of the people, where we were given the opportunity to give witness to the joy of being Sisters of St. Joseph and to enjoy the faith and commitment of the people of that parish. 3 Sisters enjoying the celebration Friends who accompanied us until the end of the celebration in the house Pina shares the following: Dear Sisters, I am very thankful for all that you did to collaborate in the celebration and for such kind and affectionate gestures that I received in this special moment of my life. I don t have any other words except to thank God for giving me such human and generous sisters to accompany me and to celebrate this moment that I looked forward to with such hope. I love you as you are, although at time there are difficulties, but that is normal. No one is perfect. We are all called by the Holy Trinity to be one, each sister with her characteristics, no one the same. I pray for you and I hope that you also remember me when you are contemplating God. PROTEST AGAINST THE SEPARATION OF CHILDREN AND PARENTS (USA) We have followed closely the sad event of many families who, wanting to migrate to the United States, were confronted with the tragic separation of more than 1,000 children being separated from their parents. This happening caused protests by every group possible. Fortunately this inhuman practice was halted. Thanks to Teresa Ponce we know that our sisters from Los Angeles were adding their voice to the protest. They went to San Diego, one of the places where the children were held in cages. Our sisters joined the protest and accompanied many activities to support the most vulnerable the children and poor families. Teresa said: When we would call out some phases to help the children feel better, the children immediately began to call out: let us out, help us, 3

4 we want to go home. This touched me deeply and left me feeling impotent. There were many groups, but I think that we need even more voices to stop such injustice. We accompany this situation with our prayers in the hopes that these children will be reunited with their loved ones as soon as possible. NEWS FROM THE CENTER HOUSE ST JOSEPH (JESUS MARÍA) Father Luis Gordillo, Jesuit priest, directed a retreat for the Conference of Religious with the theme: Poverty and trust in God. He focused on the vow of chastity and community life. Our sisters: Dolores, Betty, Genoveva, Maria V., Rosa y Ruth were very grateful for this day of reflection. Maria Schuh returned from her visit to the Albany Province. She spent time with her family and with the sisters in the Provincial House. Now she is acclimating to winter in Lima. Nevertheless, with much human warmth the sisters of the Center House welcome you, Maria. Mauricia returned from the Altiplano, Puno, after spending time with her older sister Maria. She told us that the temperature was low during the night, but in the daytime the sun was hot. It is a consolation for Mauricia to be able to be with her sister who lives alone and whose health is not good. We accompany her with our prayers. 4

NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITY OF THE GREAT LOVE OF GOD (CANTO CHICO) June 7 and 8 our sisters Yoli and Pina made a retreat in preparation for their final vows. It was directed by Sr. Anne Davis who with much affection and generosity has been accompanying sisters in different moments of their religious life. We thank her for this gesture of love that Anne makes for the congregation and the consecrated life. June 10 we had the visit of our sister Laly (Gladys Leigh CSJ). She shared with us the history and experience of when she lived and worked in San Hilarion in the difficult times of terrorism. We are grateful for the testimony of her life because she gave us lights in how to bring about the mission of Jesus in our society today. June 13 was Yoli s graduation. She graduated in psychology, receiving her Bachelor degree. We pray for Yoli that she may continue with enthusiasm and stamina in the work on her thesis that she needs to complete for her licenciatura (a degree given in Peruvian universities that is between Bachelor and Master). 5

6 At present, Yoli is realizing the supervision of young psychologist who are accompanying people in the Listening Center in the province of Jaen. There are four psychologists that she is working with who are with cases that include infidelity, academic abandonment, and low self-esteem. In Canto Chico, she continues accompanying a couple who are going through difficult times. Yoli comments: Sometimes they are very methodic, but when it is difficult to face what is happening, they don t come to the session. Nevertheless, she adds: Working with people one needs the patience of someone who waits knowing that at some day the dawn will come. In this time, Yoli is having another experience in the preparation to make her final vows. In the beginning of July she will make a two week retreat. We continue to accompany her with our prayers. June 15 we welcomed Pamela Navarro, a young woman from Huancayo, who asked to know our community more and have an experience with us in the communities of the Vice Province. We pray for her as she continues listening to God s call in her life and we are thankful for her willingness to collaborate in our missions. We are also grateful to Patty Chang who, during her stay in Canto Chico, was willing to teach math to the children who need it most. At the same time, we give thanks for María Vásquez who with great generosity is helping children in the after-school program. 6

7 También, el día 17 tuvimos una bonita visita de Norma y de Patty. Fue un día muy especial, porque tuvimos el compartir de las experiencias y un rico almuerzo preparado por nuestra hermana Yoli. Anne, Patty Chang, Yoli, Pamela and Norma (Sr. of St. Joseph of Lyons in Mexico) June 28 and 29 and July 1 we celebrated the anniversary of the Faith and Joy School Nº 32 where María Elena is teaching and helping in campus ministry. This celebration was a lovely experience for the entire school community where one could observe the sense of community and the creativity in the activities. June 29, after the celebration of Pina s final vows, our sister Anne left for the States for a visit with family, sisters, and friends. We hope that she enjoys this time of vacation and that she has a happy encounter with friends and relatives. We send our greetings and a big hug from Canto Chico. NEW FROM THE LITTLE DESIGN COMMUNITY (LAS BRISAS DE VILLA) Sharing with the catechists We invited the young people who are catechists for the sacrament of Confirmation to a time of prayer and reflection around the mission which is their testimony among the young people of today. They emphasized that God loves us very much and that, even with limitations, they experience abundance. One of them said; This happens when we let God 7

8 invade the empty places and limitations so that from there our music can flow. Afterwards we shared a snack with them. Patty Chang s visit As in the other communities we too are grateful for having Patty Chang with us. It was a very enjoyable time. Despite some limitations with language, we could make ourselves understood with the language of love which is characteristic of the CSJ s and we believe it was good for her to know our reality and how we live in this part of the city. We are grateful to Patty for sharing with us. You are most welcome whenever you want! Celebración of Corpus Christi The First Communion group, both the children and the parents, prepared the carpet of flower in our parish Our Lady of Fatima for the Corpus Christi procession. As you can see in the picture, this activity united us as a group in collaborating according to our abilities and it was beautiful to see how the children have their space in this celebration. Fund-raising activity for the construction of a chapel in the sector América of our parish As a community we collaborated with buying bingo cards, chances and food to benefit this sector of our parish. These activities also give us the opportunity to know other parts of our parish. 8

9 PAMELA COMPARTIENDO LA VIDA DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD Trataremos de apoyarla en lo que sea necesario a fin de que pueda disfrutar de su experiencia y vivencia con nosotras y el pueblo de Dios. Bienvenida Pamela! It is a joy that Pamela is sharing with us community life. We have received with great affection from June 24th. Her presence between us is very good, because she is a charismatic, collaborative and open person to donate generous. We will try to support her in whatever is necessary so that you can enjoy her life and experience with us, and God's people. Welcome Pamela! Perpetual vows and happy birthday of Pina (see Pág. 2) The preparation for the final vows of Pina was special for us and for the different groups of our chapel (one sector of the parish) since it was the first time that there was a celebration of final vows in this area. Since the 29th of June is also Pina s birthday, we celebrated it with a delicious breakfast that morning, giving thanks to God for her life. We love you, dear Pina! After the celebration of the vows we had a delicious and friendly sharing in front of the chapel. Some parish groups presented songs and dances as an expression of their happiness for Pina making her vows. Later, some of the friends of Pina and the sisters gathered in the Las Brisas house to finalize the celebration. We are grateful to each one who helped during this time, especially with your prayers and affection. We are now ready to accompany Yoli in her celebration in August NEWS FROM THE TRINITARION COMMUNITY (TACNA) Fathers Day The celebration of Fathers Day by the students and the school community of Faith and Joy School was very meaningful. The grace and talent that they demonstrated in the dances, decorations, sayings, and compositions that were shared during the celebration demonstrated the respect, affection and gratitude that the students have for their fathers. 9

10 Teacher Training Workshop in Arequipa In mid-june there was a Teacher Training Workshop offered by Esther Romero of the Faith and Joy Central Office for all the administrative teams of the schools where the primary teachers, and some in the first year of secondary, are applying the new curriculum. The accompaniment and feedback that are part of this curriculum are enriching. This new way of teaching with projects has awakened enthusiasm among the teacher and the students. It is true that not all the students advance at the same rhythm, but there is a great deal of mutual support. The Administrative Team for our school in Tacna was not able to attend because there was a problem with the permission that they needed from the Ministry of Education in Tacna. However, Zaida was able to attend and was very grateful for the opportunity to know more about the curriculum and how she can support it in our school in Tacna. All the activities in the workshop revealed the good work that the Faith and Joy Schools in the southern part of Peru are achieving, offering better learning opportunities for their students. What was new in this workshop was introducing discernment as a pedagogical strategy in the formation of students and teachers to help in making better decisions. Visit with other sisters in Tacna Our relationship with other religious in Tacna was enriched by a visit from the Sisters of Holy Cross (two sisters, a novice, and a postulant) and a Maryknoll sister. It was a lovely afternoon with good conversation about our calls to religious life, our experiences living in the South Andean Region of Peru and what are some of the challenges of our life. We finished with a delicious collation and the hope of repeating this in the future. We had the joy of having Patty Chang CSJ from Hawaii with us for several days. With great simplicity, generosity and happiness she helped us both in the school and the 10

11 house. Zaida shared that We had practice conversation in both Spanish and English which was good for both of us. Sally was a great help in the deeper conversations about the life of the families in our school and in society. Both sisters agreed: We invited Patty to stay with us it is so good to share community with her!
