London City Mission seeks to serve the church of London in sharing the love of God and the good news of Jesus Christ with the least-reached of London. The latest census data reports that under 10% of the inhabitants of London's poorest communities attend Christian churches. The poor areas of London are incredibly diverse, in fact London is the most ethnically-diverse city in the world, growing at over 100,000 people a year. We believe that these ethnic groups, often living in the poorest areas of London, are in desperate need to hear the gospel. The world has come to London, we need to take the gospel to the world by visiting homes and going out into the streets of London with the good news of the gospel. Why? Because London needs Jesus! London City Mission has been faithfully sharing the gospel with the neediest of London for over 180 years. Today, the mission is developing dynamically as the city grows and changes. Our monthly team gatherings are full of testimonies of how God is working amongst the least-reached people of the city, and our deep conviction is that much more needs to be done at this urgent hour for London. WE ARE SEARCHING FOR LEADERS DRIVEN BY THE CONVICTION THAT LONDON NEEDS JESUS 1

London City Mission has strategic clarity and missional urgency. Our strategy is to serve the church of London in sharing the love of God and the good news of Jesus Christ with the least-reached of London. The three key themes of this strategy are the Gospel, Least-reached and Church: It is an exciting time to join London City Mission and to partner with us as we continue to go through a period of significant change and growth, impacting more and more of the city with the gospel. In answer to prayer, God has been driving us forwards in recent years: In 2013, Graham Miller was appointed as our CEO ( Chief Servant ), the youngest CEO of London City Mission since our founder, David Nasmith In 2014 a bold and sharply focussed strategy was agreed: Because London Needs Jesus! In 2015 and 2016 we have been growing the number of the feet of those who preach good news by recruiting new City Missionaries to grow our existing teams across the city We are full of faith in God that LCM will continue to grow in 2017 and beyond Our approach to sharing the gospel is to patiently, sensitively and individually build relationships with the least-reached people of London in three areas of ministry: specific ethnic minorities, marginalised people such as vulnerable women and homeless people, and in deprived communities. For integrated missional reasons our city missionaries live and worship in the same community as their gospel ministry activities this is known as London City Mission s live, work, worship principle. As those who are actively involved in local churches ourselves, we seek to bring others into faith in Jesus and into the body of local church where they can learn and grow with other believers. To deliver our ambitious growth aspirations and to see God move amongst London s least-reached we are seeking to recruit more City Missionaries to courageously share the gospel in our city! 2

We are passionate about sharing the love of God and good news of Jesus Christ with the least reached in London, and to do this in partnership with churches. To help us do this, we have developed a set of values which shape the way we work and relate with each other, with the church and with people in the communities we engage with. Rooted in Christ: Prayerfully dedicated to doing God's will and living His way, according to His word Christ-like love: Looking not to our own interests but to the interests of others because we are united as brothers and sisters in Christ God-glorifying excellence: Pursuing the best that we can be to glorify God and serve each other in all we do Spirit-inspired perseverance and courage: Standing firm, pushing through, paying the price for the sake of Christ and the gospel MINISTRY DEPARTMENT CONTEXT London City Mission has embarked on a growth programme in line with our new strategy, adding 30 new City Missionaries over a four-year period. To serve and equip churches to reach out to the most needy, our missionaries are increasingly required to be leaders, trainers and mobilisers in evangelism. To achieve these ambitions, the Ministry Department has been restructured to provide better support, performance management, and collective strategy capacity. The new structure has a Director of Ministries and three Field Directors who are each responsible for managing their region and 5-8 Team Leaders. Each Team Leader is in turn responsible for managing 5-8 front-line missionary staff. During the six-month probation, you will be accountable to the Director of Training and Mentoring. On successful completion of your probation, you will come under the leadership of the local Team Leader and the regional Field Director. At this stage we normally apply our "live, work, worship" principle, noted earlier. 3

LONDON CITY MISSION STATEMENT OF FAITH As Evangelical Christians we accept the following doctrines which we regard as crucial to the understanding of the faith, and which should issue in mutual love, practical Christian service and evangelistic concern: The revelation of the triune God given in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and the historic faith of the Gospel therein set forth. The sovereignty and grace of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in creation, providence, revelation, redemption and final judgement. The divine inspiration of the Holy Scripture and its consequent entire trustworthiness and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The universal sinfulness and guilt of fallen man, making him subject to God's wrath and condemnation. The substitutionary sacrifice of the incarnate Son of God as the sole and all-sufficient ground of redemption from the guilt and power of sin, and from its eternal consequences. The justification of the sinner solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ crucified and risen from the dead. The illuminating, regenerating, indwelling and sanctifying work of God the Holy Spirit. The priesthood of all believers, who form the universal Church, the Body of which Christ is the Head and which is committed by His command to the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world. The calling of all Christian people to a life of holiness and prayer according to the Holy Scripture. The expectation of the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ in power and glory. 8

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A CITY MISSIONARY? Determining Your Suitability The following criteria are used to determine whether someone is called to full-time urban ministry with LCM. All these criteria are seen differently in potential candidates, but feel free to read through the following to gain a better understanding of whether or not this is the next step for you. If you have any questions regarding your ministry journey or areas of ministry within LCM that you re interested in, then feel free to contact Duncan Cuthill, Director of Ministries, who will point you to the most suitable person. The Criteria: 1. Gifting in Evangelism You'll have experience of evangelism You will have a heart for the least-reached 2. An Understanding of LCM You'll be aware of the particular tradition and approach of LCM to urban evangelism, and will be ready to work in that setting 3. Church You'll have belonged to a church for at least three years and will have their support and recommendation to the role 4. Christian Knowledge You'll have an intelligent commitment to the evangelical Christian faith as taught in the Bible and summarised in LCM's Statement of Faith and Conduct You will have a good working knowledge of the Bible You will also have a desire to deepen that knowledge and understanding and be capable of an appropriate course of study 9

5. Experience You will have been a committed Christian for at least 3 years and already be taking an active part in the life and outreach of the Church If you are under the age of 24 you may instead be interested in the City Vision gap year scheme. All applications will be carefully considered on their merits, especially if the applicant has previous experience in a similar ministry 6. Maturity In line with the Bible s teaching on Christian ministry (e.g. 1 Timothy 3: 6,7) you will be sufficiently mature and stable to cope with the demands and pressures of inner-city ministry in a flexible and balanced way You will be seen as a person of integrity, especially in respect of Christian values regarding marriage and the family You will be able to develop open and healthy personal and pastoral relationships as a missionary and a member of the LCM team 7. Relational skills You will have an outgoing (though not necessarily extrovert) personality, and an ability to relate to people individually, relevantly and compassionately, across many different types of cultural divide. 8. Commitment to Gospel Unity In particular, you will be willing to accept and work with Christians from different evangelical traditions and denominations without divisiveness, gladly accepting that your sole business is to point people to Christ, not to enlist them into a particular denomination. Please note: LCM does not recruit people from outside the European Union unless they have previously lived and worked in the UK, and have the appropriate visa to take up work in London. 10

Frequently Asked Questions Here are some Frequently Asked Questions related to City Missionary recruitment at London City Mission: How should I apply? If you are interested in responding to an advert for a City Missionary we would be delighted to hear from you. Please send your application to recruitment@lcm.org.uk; telling us about your career history or life experience so far and providing us with a supporting statement explaining why you are suitable for the role of City Missionary. We recommend that you use the Job Description, Placement Information and Person Specification to support your application. What happens next? We will be inviting shortlisted candidates to a first round of interviews and if you are successful after the first interview, you will be invited to second interview designed to get to you know you well and for you to understand a bit more about the City Missionary role. What if I am applying from overseas? Due to Border Agency Regulations, please note that we can only employ those who have a right to work in the UK. If you are successfully shortlisted for a first interview we will give you a Skype call so you would need to have access to a Broadband (highspeed) Internet connection. If you are invited to interview we contribute towards your travel costs, up to a maximum of 100. Will you require references? How do you decide where I will be placed if I am successful? As part of the interview process we will discuss your interests and areas of ministry experience so that we can understand where you would flourish in ministry. When you first join us you will be placed in a team and work closely with a team leader. Once you have successfully completed the six-month probationary period we will discuss with you where you will be placed longer term. London is a constantly changing and dynamic environment and our ministries often need to adapt to meet the needs of this vast and diverse city. Our missionaries are able to be flexible and adapt to changing ministry needs. Would there be any training available? London City Mission seeks to encourage our workers to be thoughtful practitioners of mission. As part of your introduction to the role we provide a two-year urban mission teaching programme which includes in-house lectures and tutorials. We also provide onthe-job training and access to appropriate external courses and conferences. Is this a paid role? We provide a basic starting salary which rises by increments along with years of service. Accommodation or housing allowance and travel payments also provided. On the completion of a successful probationary period we will also contribute to a Group Personal Pension Plan. As a City Missionary you will be entitled to 4 weeks annual holiday in addition to Bank Holidays, as well as additional holidays between Christmas Day and New Year. What kind of support will I receive? In your probationary period you will be working alongside a ministry Team Leader. Our Team Leaders are City Missionaries who have grown in their personal ministry and are able to support and lead others in their role. A Director of Ministries and regional Field Directors lead the work of our ministries, supporting and inspiring our Team Leaders and missionary staff. Every month we gather together for a Team Day so that we can catch up with missionary activities and celebrate together. 11

Will I need to do any fundraising as part of my work? At London City Mission we have an active Supporter Relations Department who engage our supporters to give financially and in prayer. Our missionaries are actively involved in working with Supporter Relations and promoting the work of London City Mission by writing regular prayer letters to supporters and visiting churches to promote the work of the Mission. The Supporter Relations Department will provide training and advice to help you develop your own prayer support and to help you to raise funding towards the financial cost of your ministry (this is currently 5,000 a year in normal circumstances). Am I right for this role? The City Missionary role is very exciting and challenging and is not for the faint hearted. To be suitable for this work, we would expect you to be able to demonstrate your dedication and commitment to urban evangelism and your passion for loving London through a Gospel outreach ministry. We are looking for individuals who have tried and tested experience in reaching out to urban communities with the Gospel and have a recognised gift in Evangelism. You will need to demonstrate experience of living and working in a multicultural city. We would also expect you to demonstrate an ability to relate to people from all walks of life and to be able to articulate your faith sensitively and engagingly. Have a look at our Job description and Person Specification for further information. What do you believe? At London City Mission our missionaries come from a variety of Christian evangelical traditions and backgrounds. This diversity, combined with unity in gospel purpose, is a great strength of the Mission. Certain core beliefs that we all share are outlined in our Statement of Faith. If you have a question that we haven t already answered, please contact us at recruitment@lcm.org.uk 12

Remuneration & Responsibilities Salary and housing Missionaries must be prepared to accept a modest standard of living and the inner-city environment that accompanies most city mission work. The work is full-time. There is a basic starting salary of 17, per annum which will rise by increments and accommodation (or in some cases a housing allowance) are provided. For single missionaries this may involve sharing accommodation. Council Tax and water rates are paid by LCM. The Mission operates a contributory Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP) which you have the opportunity to join in accordance with the scheme s eligibility criteria. Workers are initially entitled to 20 days holiday annually, in addition to Bank Holidays and three additional day at Christmas. Personal support Church support People accepted for the ministry should come with the full support of their sending church. You will need to ensure that your church, having recognised your suitability for this work, are prepared to give on-going support through prayer, giving and appropriate pastoral care. Prayer support In addition to the support of their sending church our missionaries are asked to recruit at least 30 people who will support them regularly in prayer. Financial support All London City Mission ministry staff are asked to raise a small proportion of the financial cost of their ministry (currently 5,000 a year). Supporter Relations All our missionaries are required to report back to their sending churches on their work, to write regular prayer letters to their own supporters and to be actively involved in promoting the work of the London City Mission to the Christian public (at present this involves up to 24 days a year participating in visits to churches who support our ministry). Training London City Mission seeks to encourage their workers to be thoughtful practitioners of mission. We therefore seek to provide ongoing training to achieve that goal through in-house lectures and tutorials, on the job training and access to appropriate external courses. 13
