1 Camp Ground United Methodist Church 4625 Camp Ground Road Fayetteville, NC Address Service Requested FROM OUR PASTOR, Charles R. Swindoll shares his story: Ignance Jan Paderewski, the famous composer/pianist, was scheduled to perform at a great concert hall in America. It was an evening to remember black tuxedos and long evening dresses, a high society extravaganza. Present in the audience that evening was a mother with her fidgety nine-year-old son. Weary of waiting, he squirmed constantly in his seat. His mother was in hopes that her son would be encouraged to practice the piano if he could just hear the immortal Paderewski at the keyboard. So, against his wishes, he had come. As she turned to talk with friends, her son could stay seated no longer. He slipped away from her side, strangely drawn to the ebony concert grand Steinway and its leather tufted stool on the huge stage flooded with blinking lights. Without much Rev. Haywood Smith UNITED METHODIST CHURCH HOLIDAY SEASON 2012 ARBOR VINE notice from the sophisticated audience, the boy sat down at the stool, staring wide-eyed at the black and white keys. He placed his small, trembling fingers in the right location and began to play chopsticks. The roar of the crowd was hushed as hundreds of frowning faces pointed in his direction. Irritated and embarrassed, they began to shout, Get that boy away from here. Who d bring a kid that young in here? Where s his mother? Somebody stop him! Backstage, the master overheard the sounds out front and quickly put together in his mind what was happening. Hurriedly, he grabbed his coat and rushed toward the stage. Without one word of announcement, he stooped over behind the boy, reached around both sides, and began to improvise a counter melody to harmonize with and enhance chopsticks. As the two of them played together, Paderwski kept whispering in the boy s ear: (CONTINUED)

5 (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) KEEP GOING...DON T QUIT...KEEP ON PLAYING...DON T STOP...DON T QUIT And so it is with us. We hammer away on our project, which seems about as significant as chopsticks in a concert hall. And about the time we are ready to give up, along comes the Master, who leans over and whispers: Now keep going; don t quit. Keep on...don t stop; don t quit, as He improvises on our behalf, providing just the right touch at just the right moment. As we hammer away at our projects As we go about our business of being busy As we seek to make another call As we run the race As we turn another page As we go about trying to get along It would behoove us to glance over our shoulders. For a moment, we may not see anyone, but then again, we might. Just a glance. A presence. Someone we know has always been there. Someone we know will not turn away when we need Him most. Someone who keeps whispering in our ears Keep going Don t quit Keep on playing Don t stop Don t quit... Just when someone says, You ll never make it. He says, Keep going. I ll be with you. Just when someone says, Who do you think you are? He says, Don t quit. You are mine. Just when someone says, you re not what we re looking for. He says, Keep playing. I can use you. Just when someone says, You might as well give up. He says, Don t stop. The best is yet to come. (Seems like I ve heard that somewhere before!) Just when someone says, You re a loser. He says, Don t quit. Because I win, you win. Now, who are you going to listen to? The crowd or Christ? There is a story about a preacher who started to read the Bible in the service without knowing that some youngsters had glued two pages together. He read from the bottom of the page, When Noah was 120 years old he took unto himself a wife who was - and here he turned the glued pages and continued, 140 cubits long, 40 cubits wide, built of gopher wood, and covered with pitch inside and out. He stopped; he read the passage again. Obviously, he was puzzled. But he finally said, I don t ever remember reading that in the Bible before, but I accept it as evidence that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Just when it seems the crowd is shouting Get out of here! What do you think you re doing? Hey, God s not interested in you! You look over your shoulder. Feel a touch. A presence. The pages are all stuck together. All you seem to be playing is chopsticks. What s the use? You hear Him saying: KEEP GOING DON T QUIT KEEP ON PLAYING DON T STOP DON T QUIT Me? Fearfully and wonderfully made. Is that possible? But how? Jesus said, I go to prepare a place for you. Keep going. Jesus said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. Don t quit. Jesus said, My joy will be in you. Keep on playing. Jesus said, It is not my will that any should perish. Don t stop. Jesus said, Fear not. I am with you. Don t quit. And every once in awhile, glance over your shoulder and say, Thank you." God bless you always In His Love! Haywood
