1 6:1-13 Seventh Sunday after Pentecost July 8th, 2018 We acknowledge the Jaara Jaara people, of Dja Dja Wurrung language group, the custodians of this land where we gather. We pay our respects to their elders past and present and pray for reconciliation.

What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Mark 6.2 The Lord be with you. And also with you Almighty God. We pray the Prayer of preparation (page 119 of the prayer book) The Shema (page 120 of the prayer book) Hear, O Israel. The Confession and absolution (page 120 of the prayer book) Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God s forgiveness. Merciful God We take a moment of silent reflection

3 Knowing that we are forgiven, we sing The Gloria (page 121 of the prayer book) Let us pray O Lord our God, you are always more ready to bestow your good gifts upon us than we are to seek them; and more willing to give than we desire or deserve: in our every need, grant us the first and best of all your gifts, the Spirit who makes us your children. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. MINISTRY OF THE WORD A reading from the second book of Samuel chapter 5, verse 1 to 5 and verses 9 to 10 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, Look, we are your bone and flesh. For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The LORD said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

4 David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David. David built the city all around from the Millo inward. And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him. For the word of the Lord thanks be to God Psalm 48 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised: in the city of our God. High and beautiful is his holy hill: it is the joy of all the earth. On Mount Zion, where godhead truly dwells, stands the city of the Great King: God is well known in her palaces as a sure defence. For the kings of the earth assembled: they gathered together and came on; They saw, they were struck dumb: they were astonished and fled in terror. Trembling took hold on them, and anguish: as on a woman in her travail; Like the breath of the east wind: that shatters the ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts: in the city of our God, which God has established for ever. We have called to mind your loving-kindness, O God: in the midst of your temple. As your name is great, O God, so also is your praise: even to the ends of the earth.

5 Your right hand is full of victory let Zion s hill rejoice: let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of your judgements. Walk about Zion, go round about her, and count all her towers: consider well her ramparts, pass through her palaces; That you may tell those who come after that such is God: our God for ever and ever, and he will guide us eternally. A reading from the second letter to the Corinthians chapter 12 verses 2 to 10 I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong. Alleluia The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark, chapter 6 beginning at the 1 st verse Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, Prophets are not without honour, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house. And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. With our hearts set on the kingdom and our hands open to serve, we pray as Jesus taught us Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen Everyone is welcome to the table of the Lord. Prayer after communion... In the name of Christ. Amen. ***some thoughts from Rev. Mel.. On Tuesday I got a phone call to tell me that one of our much loved local people had died. Gene Roberts, who has come to church at St Mary s several times over the past two years, usually with his dog Marley, was a proud Jaara Jaara man and a friend to many people in Woodend. I first met him at the pub of all places! Once a month Holgate would host Story Door, an evening where locals could come and tell a story of

10 about 10 minutes. The only rules were that it had to be true and had to be your own story to tell. I heard many beautiful stories that night, but the story that began to unfold for me that day wasn t told on the stage, it was begun in a conversation between Gene and I. From that evening we were mates. I wanted to learn everything that he could tell me about his culture and country and he was so very generous with his knowledge. He and I would talk for hours about God and Jesus and Dreaming and Bunjil. The day after I was ordained priest, Gene offered a welcome to country at St Mary s for me, Bishop Andrew, and the gathered people, and held a smoking ceremony at the door of the church. I m sure some of you would remember that. It meant a tremendous amount that he would do that as he was a stolen child and the church was complicit in him being taken from his mother when he was a child. His ability to forgive, teach, and listen was a wonderful example to me and he has given me a heart for true reconciliation. I pray for an easy walk back to the water for my brother Gene, Mel Meditation Group 5pm every Monday at St Mary s. ************************** Pew Bulletin Conversation/Australis Group Will resume on July 17 th at 7pm in the rectory Mid Week Eucharist 10am every Wednesday at St Mary s. Youth Ministry Group Our Youth Ministry Group meets on the first Wednesday of the month from 5-7pm in the hall.

Raffle Elizabeth Hannah, from St Paul s Kyneton, is holding a fund raiser raffle for her friend Hassan Mirza to assist with printing and framing costs for an exhibition of his photographic works during the daffodil festival next month. Tickets are $3 each or 4 for $10 and the prize is a framed picture taken in the Dandenong Ranges. Hassan lives in Melbourne after fleeing his home country of Pakistan five years ago. 12 Book Sale St Peter s Bookroom are holding a pop up book shop in our hall on July 22 nd after church until 2pm. This amazing little shop, attached to St Peter s Eastern Hill, is a very big reason for Rev Mel s groaning bookshelves. Carol, the manager, will be bringing theology and spirituality books, as well as cards and gifts. Day for Girls Workshop There will be a workshop in the hall on July 21 st from 10am-2pm to cut, sew and pack sanitary items for girls living overseas. If you can help please contact Melissa Hocking on before July 17 for catering purposes.
