1 TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Trinity Lamplighter VOLUME 39 ISSUE 6 J UNE, 2015 An Epistle from John for June You know that I like the music of George Jones and I have songs that are special to me. One is his song Choices that you have heard me quote. Recently, I received the following that spoke to me and reminded me of that song and I want to share it with you. The Choice (By Max Lucado) It's quiet. It's early. My coffee is hot. The sky is still black. The world is still asleep. The day is coming. In a few moments the day will arrive. It will roar down the track with the rising of the sun. The stillness of the dawn will be exchanged for the noise of the day. The calm of solitude will be replaced by the pounding pace of the human race. The refuge of the early morning will be invaded by decisions to be made and deadlines to be met. For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to the day's demands. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I'm free to choose. And so I choose. I choose love. I choose Love... No occasion justifies hatred. No injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: The Choice, continued from page 1, Our Mission Financial Notes, Thrift Store Hours, Summer time And the Living is Easy, Thank you! Worship Assistants, It s Summer Celebrate Creation, Relay for Life, Vacation Bible School Calendar, Birthdays and Anniversaries Operation Christmas Child News, Countdown, Congratulations Graduates! Condolences Visitors, Office Hours I choose Joy... I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance. I will refuse the temptation to be cynical... the tool of a lazy thinker. I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings, created by God. I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God. I choose Peace... I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live. I choose Patience... I will overlook the inconveniences of the world. Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I'll invite him/her to do so. Rather than complain that the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray. Instead of clenching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage. (Continued on page 2)
2 T HE TRINITY P AGE 2 I choose Kindness... I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone. Kind to the rich, for they are afraid. And kind to the unkind, for such is how God treated me. I choose Goodness... I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be overlooked before I boast. I will confess before I accuse. I choose goodness. I choose Faithfulness... Today I will keep my promises. My debtors will not regret their trust. My associates will not question my word. My wife/husband will not question my love. And my children will never fear that their father will not come home. I choose Gentleness... Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it only be in praise. If I clench my fist, may it only be in prayer. If I make a demand, may it only be of myself. I choose Self-Control... I am a spiritual being. After this body is dead, my spirit will soar. I refuse to let what will rot, rule the Eternal. I choose self-control. I will be drunk only by joy. I will be impassioned only by my faith. I will be influenced only by God. I will be taught only by Christ. I choose self-control. Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. To these I commit my day. If I succeed, I will give thanks. If I fail, I will seek his grace. And then, when this day is done, I will place my head on my pillow and rest. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not selfish, and does not become angry easily. Love does not remember wrongs done against it. Love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love patiently accepts all things. It always trusts, always hopes, and always continues strong. Love never ends." (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a... New Century Version) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ To Extend the Outreach of the Trinity United Methodist Church Our vision at Trinity is to grow as a community of faith. Our mission is to welcome all people in Christian love, and to nurture and encourage forgiveness and reconciliation through Biblical teaching. Our SmartGoal is To extend the Outreach of Trinity United Methodist Church.
3 P AGE 3 CHURCH RECORDS WORSHIP ATTENDANCE: Date 8:30 am 10:30 am Total April Singfest 182 May May May May ====================================== V OLUME 39 FINANCE UPDATE (Thank you for your attendance and monetary support of Trinity United Methodist Church) Sunday Offerings to General Account: April 26 $ 1, May 3 $ 1, May 10 $ 1, May 17 $ 2, May 24 $ 1, ================================= Thursday: 9am-5pm, Friday: 1pm-5pm, Saturday: 10am-2pm 214 East 14th Russell, Kansas (785) SUMMER TIME...AND THE LIVING IS EASY But not at Trinity Community Thrift Store! Warmer weather and longer daylight hours means people are cleaning out cupboards, closets and garages at home. A favorite destination for those found treasurers is 214 East 14th...the Thrift Store. We need your help to get us through this busy time. Please consider contributing some of those extra daylight hours in your life to the mission work being done at the Thrift Store. You can find someone to open the back door and welcome you in most week day mornings. Monday night is also a good time to learn the ropes. We begin working at 7 and stop at 8. Saturdays are a barrel of laughs--kind of a "whistle while you work" atmosphere-- beginning at 10 a.m. (often earlier) and ending at least by 2 p.m. If you want to call before you leave the house to ensure that someone is there, the phone number is Volunteering at the Thrift Store is a great family activity! Start your summer off with a special emphasis on unselfishly giving back to others through your work at the Thrift Store. Your children and grandchildren will have something very special to share with their teacher and classmates when they write that paper "What I Did During Summer Vacation." Best of all, it will be a memory and hopefully, an ongoing habit, long after the summer months are gone. And the Thrift Store is air-conditioned! I recently heard this bible verse from 1 Thessalonians 5: "Gently encourage the stragglers, and reach out for the exhausted, pulling them to their feet. Be patient with each person, attentive to individual needs." This is what we practice everyday at our little white mission building at 214 East 14th. We practice this with each other and with our customers. This is what Jesus would want us to do. THANK YOU Thank you to all of you that helped with the Moving Party on May 18. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated. A lot was accomplished that evening and we could not have done it without your help. Thank you!

7 P AGE 7 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD NEWS V OLUME 39 Sewing Projects: No OCC Sewing Club on May 30th or for the rest of the summer. Some of us will continue to work on bags during the hot days of summer. Others will be working on a new project--fabric Tic-Tac-Toe boards! I have fabric already cut out and ready to be sewn for bags. The game boards are an excellent way to use small bits of excess fabric that you may have. Summer Sales: Since most of the Shoe Box destinations have summer weather, some times 12 months of the year. Summer is an excellent time to pick up items for shoe boxes. Boxes are packed for boys or girls, age groups 2-4, 5-9 and years. School sales are a really good time to pick up crayons, pencils and other school supplies. Be on the look out for sales. Use your coupons, too, to buy hygiene products such as toothpastes, toothbrushes, deodorant and soap. No liquids please! Save those hotel soaps that you might accumulate while on summer vacation. They might be a perfect fit in a filled shoe box. Look for fun items that are always a part of summer time--jump ropes, balls, small games, etc. Save the Date: October 25, 2015 afternoon in Fellowship Hall. We'll be have an Packing Party Organizing Party (P-POP!) to prepare and organize items for the actual OCC Packing Party to be held for the WOW children. Projects that you can look forward to doing are: Packaging puzzles and candy in ziplock bags, pairing socks, constructing shoe boxes, and organizing items on tables in to boy and girl items and age groups. We'll also learn more about Operation Christmas Child...followed by a meal. Needs: I am at this time emphasizing the following practical needs to be included in our OCC Packing Party Shoeboxes: white socks for boys, wash clothes, soap, toothbrushes, tooth pastes and combs. Also needed is money to ship our OCC Packing Party Shoeboxes. $7 will cover the cost of shipping one box. For more information: Contact LuAnn Walters COUNTDOWN The McCurdy Mission Work Team is 12 months out from its June 4 - June 11, 2016 trip to Espanola, NM. It is not too late to join the fun! Special activities are planned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our first trip as well as the possibility of our last trip to work at McCurdy Mission (but not our last mission trip). Get involved now in the planning and fund raising activities. A $100 down payment will be due by May 1, This will cover your board and room for the trip. An extra $100 or more will be needed for extra spending money. If you are a youth, you can raise your down payment and spending money by volunteering at the Trinity Community Thrift Store. Thank you to our church family for your continued support of this life-changing event. Congratulations to our 2015 Graduates! 2015 Russell High School Graduates are: Kiefer Craig, Jasmine Pasek, Bailey Dollison, Kasey Radke, James Ridgley Jr College Graduate is: Karly Standley Congratulations and best wishes from all of us at Trinity United Methodist Church!
