3 Responsive Reading Church Covenant 2 Corinthians 15:12 LEADER: What common experience leads us into spiritual fellowship and covenant relations with God and one another? CONGREGATION: Having been led, as we believe by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus as our Savior, and, on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God and in this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ. LEADER: By what pledge do we turn from the ways of the world? CONGREGATION: We promise by the aid of the Holy Spirit to forsake the paths of sin, and to walk in the ways of holiness all the days of our lives. LEADER: What are some of our privileges and duties in this our church? CONGREGATION: With this view we engage to strive together for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines. LEADER: What vows do we gladly make as stewards of that which God has entrusted us? CONGREGATION: To contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations. LEADER: For the sake of the unsaved for whom Christ died, to what manner of life and conversation are we solemnly Continued on back

4 Responsive Reading Church Covenant continued CONGREGATION: To walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, back-biting, and excessive anger; to be zealous in our efforts to advance the Kingdom of our Savior. LEADER: For the sake of our home and loved ones, what tasks do we humbly assume? CONGREGATION: We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances. LEADER: Since one is our master, even Christ, and we all are brethren, by what fraternal ministries are we to strengthen each other and adorn the teaching of our Lord and Savior? CONGREGATION: We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember on another in prayer, to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and Christian courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay. LEADER: For the good of our spiritual development, and for the best interests of the Master s kingdom, what do we promise to do, if we move beyond the reach of this church? CONGREGATION: We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God s Word. TOGETHER: Humbly confessing our past sins, we pray for grace and strength to keep these, our holy vows, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. A Faith In Action Early Voting Rally will be held Sunday, November 2 (2-6pm) at City Market (222 E. Market Street). Komen for the Cure Indianapolis Affiliate will host Circle of Promise, Pink, Power, & Praise an African-American, faith-based, breast cancer education event on Saturday, December 6 (9:00am-12:00pm) at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church (1003 W. 16th Street). The Keynote speaker will be Monet Bowling, MD, breast surgical oncologist, Indiana University. 8 Render Unto Caesar We are in the midst of some very exciting and historic times here in America. More specifically, we are witnessing the possibility of the first African- American to be elected to the highest office in the land. It is mind-boggling for so many because some thought and some still think it is impossible for anything of this magnitude to happen. But I am here to tell you, it really can happen. For many of us, our excitement comes because we have lived through the Jim Crow Era where we had no voting rights, and we lived in a totally segregated society. As a result, some of our lives were put on the line for freedom; then there were others who died hoping that one day such an opportunity as this would occur. It is breathtaking! But sadly, a few days ago, I heard someone say, It doesn t matter who gets elected so I m not going to waste my time voting. The fact that the pigmentation of this individual s skin is the same as mine almost sent me into a rage, because that is the attitude that so many of our people ascribe to that it doesn t matter. Well, I beg to differ; it does matter. As a Christian, it is our duty. Better yet, it is our obligation to participate in the political process. Even Jesus said, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar s; and unto God the things that are God s. (Matt 22:21). So, since we live in America, pay taxes, and are the ones affected by every whim that comes along, then we are obligated to participate in the voting process. It is our Christian duty. Having said that, one of the biggest problems we face in society as it relates to elected officials is that we do not have enough God-fearing individuals in government positions. It is clear throughout the Old Testament that whenever Israel had a Godly king, Israel prospered and was able to defeat its enemies. In contrast, when ungodly leaders emerged and led the people away from God, Israel found trouble within and without the camp. How do we get the right people in positions except we participate in the political process? And when we participate, we will know for ourselves that it does matter who gets elected, and that our votes do count.

9 Render Unto Caesar (continued) I mentioned we are in historic times. Our economy is faltering; jobs are being lost; houses are being foreclosed on; banks are becoming insolvent; crime is at an all time high; gas prices have escalated; moral values are only associated with political terms; and yet there are those who will not take the time to register, and exercise their right to vote. No wonder the rich keep getting richer and the poor are dismissed by those in leadership. If you want to see a change in the direction of this country, then we must have a record turnout in the upcoming election. The effects will be seen and felt all the way back to the local governing level. I encourage every individual to register and vote in the upcoming election process and help guide our country back to a point were we regain respect in the world; restore civility, and work for the betterment of all citizens. It will not be an easy journey; however, we can assist in steering the journey in a more positive direction if not for ourselves, then for future generations. ****************** Taken from There is a Word...
