5 The First Lesson Acts 4:32-35 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. The Second Lesson 1 John 1:1-2:2 We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life-- this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us-- we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 6 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. 7 The Holy Gospel John 20:19-31 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. 8 The Presentation and Examination of the Candidate The Presider says The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Evelyn Rose Treglio The Candidate is presented by their Sponsors who say Sponsors I present N. to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The Presider then asks the parents and godparents Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents I will, with God s help. Presider Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? Parents and Godparents I will, with God s help. The Presider then asks Question Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? Answer I renounce them. Question Answer Question Answer Question Answer Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? I renounce them. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? I do. Question Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? Answer I do. Question Answer Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? I do. Please stand as you are able 8

9 After all have been presented, the Presider addresses the congregation, saying Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support this person in her life in Christ? We will. The Presider then says Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. The Baptismal Covenant Presider Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Presider Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Presider Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Presider Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Presider Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? 9

Presider Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Prayers for the Candidate The Presider then says to the people Let us now pray for this person who is to receive the Sacrament of new birth. The Presider says Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. Thanksgiving over the Water The Presider then says The Lord be with you. And also with you. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Presider We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Presider touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 11

12 The Baptism The candidate is presented by name to the priest or deacon, who pours water upon the candidate, saying N, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying to each one N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. When this action has been completed for all candidates, the Presider prays over the newly baptized, saying Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Presider Let us welcome the newly baptized, saying together Presider and We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. As the procession returns to the sanctuary, the Presider asperges the as the choir sings Vidi Aquam. I saw water issuing forth from the temple, flowing from the right side, and all those to whom that water was given obtained salvation. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good: his mercy endures for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.
