Register here: As the keynote speaker for the 2018 Arklatex Lectures in Preaching, Dr. Frank A. Thomas author, scholar and renowned preacher will offer insights from his new book How to Preach a Dangerous Sermon. The dangerous sermon is one that refuses to reflect idolatrous, diabolical imaginings of our human future. Rather, it reshapes them, by activating the four qualities of moral imagination: the embodied presence of the preacher, empathy as a bridge between past injustice and future possibilities, wisdom found in ancient texts, and hope conveyed through artistic, poetic language. With reference to historical addresses and sermons by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Kenney, Prathia Hall and others, Dr. Thomas will demonstrate how contemporary preachers can incorporate the moral imagination into their own dangerous sermons. For more information contact Sabina Hulem at shulem@smu.edu

Upcoming trips include an immersion opportunity in Palestine/Israel in January, an immersion to El Salvador in January, and a spring break trip to Taos. We would love to have you. For more information contact Emily Clark, Global Theological Education Student Assistant at globaltheology@smu.edu August 24 through December 7 Bridwell Library Entry Hall The United Methodist Church (UMC) was created in 1968 through two unions, one internal and one external. The internal union was the joining together of Black and White Methodists into a racially integrated denomination. The external union was the merging of two Wesleyan bodies: The Methodist Church with 10,289,000 members and The Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church with 746,000 members. The process of negotiating integration and merger required many years. It culminated in Dallas, Texas with a Uniting Conference held between April 21 and May 4, This exhibition commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of The United Methodist Church. A selection of publications and images document Methodist integration, the Methodist-EUB merger, and the Uniting Conference that created the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States. 11 Study Techniques that Work By the time you make it to seminary, you probably believe you know how to study. But do you know how to study effectively? Research shows that typical study techniques like highlighting readings and reviewing class notes are really ineffective ways of learning. Here are some techniques that are effective: Practice questions: If your instructor doesn t already provide them, ask her if you can have copies of old exams to use as practice questions. If those aren t forthcoming, make up your own and answer them or work with fellow students to make them up and answer each other s. Rewrite your notes in your own words: Go through your notes and rewrite and reorganize them so that they include full statements of ideas and are organized in ways that distinguishes levels of importance and identify relationships in the material. This technique works best if you can do it within a day or so of taking the notes. In the process, you may identify questions that need clarification from your instructor. Concept maps: A concept map is a visual representation of the relationships within the material you are studying. The process of creating one helps you process the material and the result provides a mnemonic tool. More information on concept mapping can be found at and msu.edu/~luckie/ctools/. Cheat sheets: Even if you cannot use them on a test, the process of creating them will help you learn the material. Do not just list isolated bits of information. Take the time to organize them, identifying relationships, illustrating complexity, and clarifying ambiguities. Prepare to teach the material: Full disclosure: This is my Number One all time recommendation for studying to learn thoroughly. Approach your study as if you are preparing to teach the material to someone else. How will you communicate the key concepts and relationships? How can you illustrate complexities without causing confusion? What are the levels of understanding you want your students to comprehend? How can you create interest and engagement? Outline actual lesson plans and presentations. These probably seem like a lot more work than highlighting and reviewing and they are. You don t have to do them all. Try them out individually and find out which ones work best for you. Surviving Seminary! is a regular feature of the Perkins News. The editors are Jane Elder (jelder@smu.edu), Duane Harbin (dharbin@smu.edu) and David Schmersal (dschmersal@smu.edu). Got a great seminary survival strategy?
