2 A Stained Glass Window We all have stories of how God has intersected our lives. I call them God sightings. This is one story of a God sighting that happened to me recently. Flagstaff, Arizona is a beautiful town with tall ponderosa pine trees, snow-covered San Francisco Peaks, miles of picturesque trails, and flavored with cowboys and Native Americans. The town is charming with its southwestern shops, yet many call it poverty with a view because of the high cost of living, and few jobs. My daughter who lives in Flagstaff called me to pray for her to find another job. She had scattered resumés throughout the city, and was waiting for calls to interview. She applied at the school district and out of 18 applicants, they had decided to interview four, and she was one of the four. She called and asked me to pray. She interviewed, and was called back for a second interview. They had narrowed the playing field down to two, and she was one of the two. She was excited as she relayed the news to me. I m one of the finalists for the job, Mom. I asked her when she was interviewing, and she told me, 8:30 a.m. I said, that s 11:30 my time. I ll pray at that time. Now we all know about the beautiful stained glass windows that grace the sanctuary here at the church. From every direction, a kaleidoscope of color will dance in the sacred space as the sunshine and quietness of God s peace saturates our hearts. Such was the case, one Tuesday morning when I went to pray. At 11:35 I went to the sanctuary, and knelt at the altar. I asked God to give my daughter favor with the people interviewing her, and to reveal His love for her. Just as I ended the prayer, rays of sunlight hit my shoulder as light poured into the sanctuary from the corner of the stained glass window. I looked up toward the light, and knew God had heard my prayer. I waited for her call. She finally called me to tell me the interview had gone well, but she didn t know what was going to happen. I shared with her. Let me 2. tell you what happened in the sanctuary as I prayed for you the exact time you were in the interview. I shared with her the story of the sunshine coming through the stained glass window warming my shoulder at the exact spot I was kneeling. She exclaimed, Mom, the lady that is retiring has a stained glass window in her office. I excitedly told her, Honey, you ve got the job. I know it. You ve got the job. She questioned, Mom, do you really think so? I said, Yes. One hour later, the call came in to me. Mom, I got the job! I quietly went back to the sanctuary, and knelt down in the same spot, and thanked God for blessing my child; for giving her favor, and revealing His love for her. As parents, we never stop praying for our children whether near or far; always asking Him to reveal His love to them. A stained glass window So simple, yet grand. Revealing God s love By the touch of His Hand. A loving prayer from a mother s heart. Asking God to bless A child and never depart His grace and mercy Wherever they are. Whether near to us Or places so far. Warming their hearts. Assured of His care. God will be a Father And always be there. Til we meet again, Deborah P.S. She loves her job!! Deborah Musick

4 Angels On High Preschool Update Angels on High Preschool and PDO is off to a great start! We have had many events and activities throughout the last months. Our classes enjoyed their first two chapels. It is always a blessing to listen to the preschool children as they praise God with their songs, and to witness their learning about Jesus. A special thank you to Pastor Daryl and Deborah Musick for providing the Bible story during the chapel. The HSUMC congregation and preschool families are always invited to our chapels, so please feel free to join us! During October, we held two Open Houses and Pizza Fellowship Dinners. These events were a great time and we enjoyed seeing everyone there! We also celebrated the fall season with a Fall Party. The children were invited to wear their costumes and parade for the preschool and church staff. It was great fun! This month, our students were able to attend a variety of field trips. The 4-year old classes were able to learn about Johnny Appleseed and visit a pumpkin patch. Next month, they look forward to visiting the BSU Planetarium. Our 3-year old classes explored their senses at the Muncie Children s Museum and nature at Minnetrista Cultural Center. In November, they will have a chance to visit Winter Wonderland at the Muncie Children s Museum. The Enrichment classes learned about nature at the Cardinal Depot and visited a pumpkin patch. The Transition Class had a great time at One Fun Farm and are looking forward to visiting the Winter Wonderland and a visit from a bat expert. We are looking forward to our first Preschool Sunday of the school year. The students will be performing a few songs and there will be a short slide show. This will be held on Sunday, November 10 at the 11:00 service. We hope many will join us for this special event! As our preschool and PDO continues to grow, so do our needs of consumable supplies. In the parlor of the church, the preschool has placed a board listing the needs we have at this time. Please take a moment to visit this board or our website ( to see what items are needed. We can always use donation of packaged snacks, disinfecting wipes, baby wipes, kleenex, paper towels! We thank you in advance for your donations. There are many ways to support Angels on High Preschool. As mentioned above, you can donate essential items or volunteer in the classroom. Another way to support the preschool is to help with the fall fund raisers. During the months of 4. November and December the preschool will be selling our own delicious cheese balls for $6.00. We offer dessert cheese balls and cheddar. These are great for upcoming holiday gatherings, as well as gifts! You can purchase these at church or by contacting Rebecca. The preschool is also selling Christmas Wreaths for the holiday season. These wreaths can be purchased as gifts and mailed directly to the recipient. You can also purchase them for yourself! These will be sold during church and more information can be found on our website at www. angelsonhigh.org. We have been very fortunate to have Ball State University students volunteering in our classrooms! Their energy and love for the children allows us to provide even more for our students. Unfortunately, we will be without our students during their breaks. We would invite you to consider volunteering in our classrooms. You are always welcome in our classrooms, but we especially need help during the weeks of December 16-20, January 6-10, and January Also, if you love to read, our Transition Class invites you to join them as a guest mystery reader. 6 Charge Conference 2013 Our Charge Conference will be held on Wednesdsay, November 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Center Chapel UMC. All members of our Church Council are members of the Charge Conference and are encouraged to attend. We will join the other six churches in our cluster in listening to Bob Riggles, our campus pastor at Ball State, whom we are supporting together as a cluster. We will also take care of the annual business of electing officers, setting pastoral compensation and removing inactive members from our rolls. Foundation Underwrites Two Events At a recent meeting, the High Street Foundation voted to approve two requests that will bring some very special opportunities to our church. In both cases, the monies are coming from the Nearing Fund, which is to be used to bring in special religious leaders, speakers, music, etc. On Saturday, December 14, the Masterworks Chorale will be performing its Christmas Concert in our sanctuary. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Andrew Crow. On Saturday, January 25, Dr. Craig Hill will be presenting two workshops here at High Street Church in conjunction with our East District. Dr. Hill is the Research Professor of Theological Pedagogy and Executive Director of the D. Min. and M.A.C.P. programs at Duke Divinity School. The two workshops will be for pastors and church members and deal with a United Methodist understanding of apocalyptic literature ( end times ) in the Bible. Then on Sunday, Dr. Hill will preach at both our 8:30 and 9:45 services. Africa University Rally Here Bishop Mike Coyner will be leading into High Street Church for a rally for Africa University on Sunday, November 3. High Street Church is one of the few sites that Bishop Coyner and the team have selected in an effort to ignite Indiana United Methodists in raising $1,000,000 to endow a faculty position in agriculture and natural resources and at least $600,000 in scholarships for Africa University students. Africa University is a United Methodist institution in Zimbabwe that is educating students from all around Africa. The rally begins at 3:00 p.m. and will go until 4:30. Resounding Mercy will provide the music. 6. Thank You Thank you for all who prayed, sent cards, phoned, visited, or helped in so many ways at the time of my hospitalization and recovery. I am truly grateful. Your expressions of friendship are a true blessing to me! Please forgive my lateness in posting my thanks. Louise Eddington Angels On High Serves Record Number! At the last Angels On High board meeting, Director Rebecca Swander reported that we now have 111 children registered in our preschool ministry and 55 in our Parents Day Out ministry. There is, of course, some overlap, as some preschoolers arrive early and stay later and are part of PDO. Last year our Angels On High preschool set a record high registration mark at 72. The Trustees have finalized their expenditures from the capital campaign funds for the Willa Stevenson Center. We are finalizing the costs, which should end up in the mid $700,000 range. We had approved a figure of $498, for the project; that figure did not include furnishings. The total figure will include furnishings. It also includes cost overruns, the largest of which had to do with the totally unexpected drainage problem with the parking lot. As you know, we ended up having to tear up a good section of our lot, excavate and remove from that area, connect to the sewer system, and repave the lot so that water would not drain toward and into the Stevenson Center. Now with the tuck pointing of the church completed and the Stevenson Center in operation, we now turn our attention toward paying off the two loans related to these first two projects ($95,764 to the Trustees Major Maintenance Fund and $192,788 to the High Street Foundation) and toward the renovation of our organ. We are about halfway along in our three-year capital campaign and have accomplished much. Our continued support is needed to complete our goals.
