AN OPPORTUNTITY FOR GROWTH In the weeks ahead, you will be reading more about our annual renewal for the Offertory Commitment Program (OCP) and ways to help our parishes increase their collections. This an opportunity for all of us to address the most pressing needs in our parish through this increased giving campaign. Our hope is to increase our weekly collection by at least 25%. Currently our weekly collection is $ 5, at Sacred Heart Parish and $ 1, at Saint John the Baptist Parish To address our needs, we need to increase our weekly average income to at least 25% weekly to $ 6, at Sacred Heart, and at Saint John the Baptist to $ 2, We are also asking those who have not joined our Offertory Commitment Program (OCP) to do so, and make a pledge to support our parish over the coming year. Each week, this space in the Sacred Heart Parish and Saint John the Baptist Parish bulletin will be devoted to reminders and important announcements concerning the Increased Offertory Commitment Campaign. Please be on the lookout for more information about this exciting opportunity. The Team Captain Meeting on Monday, October 27 th at 7:00 PM in the Church Hall has been postponed. 4 Dear Friends in Christ: This week end we welcome The Very Reverend Gerard Petringa, North Region of the Archdiocese. Fr. Petringa will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation for the young people of our parishes at the 5:30 Mass in Sacred Heart Church. The prayers and best wishes of the parishes are extended to our Confirmation Candidates. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit inspire them and strengthen their faith. Thank you to all who have been instrumental in their formation and preparation for the Sacrament. This journey began with their parents and godparents at the their Baptism. At that time we prayed that the parents would be the first and best teachers of their children in the ways of faith. This is a responsibility that continues throughout life and in a special way is assumed by the students as they are confirmed and welcomed as adults into the life of the Church. As adults in the life of the Church they are called to publicly proclaim their faith in the life they live and, guided by the teachings of the church, the chooses they make. Their faith is deepened by their regular prayers, continued learning about the faith and in regular and active participation in Mass. Let us pray that our parishes will continue to lead them to grow in the love of God and that they become active members of their community. Thank you to the teachers that they have had in Religious Education over the years, in a special way we acknowledge the work of Jay Caress, Peter Kaneb and Veronica Matthews who have been their guides the past few years in Confirmation preparation. The following are the Confirmandi for this year: Aisling - Agatha - Batchelder Joseph - Robert - Bertagna Megan - Ann - Clark Charles - John Chrysostom - Davis Nicholas - Nicholas - DiPietro Nathan - Thomas - Evans Cormac - Peter - Flickinger Gillian - Elizabeth- Guerin Jack - Michael - Hennigan Holly - Nicholas - Kaneb Katey - Rose - Latassa Molly - Lucia - Lynch Caitlyn - Brigid - Malloy Isabella - Faustina - Mastendino Sabrina - Therese - Pallazola Lydia - Rose - Parker Edward - Thomas Becket - Siqueira May the Holy Spirit fill their hearts and lives with an outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, Come!! Peace Fr. Jack Memorial Mass for the Deceased of the Parish On Saturday, November 1, the 5:30 Mass at Sacred Heart Church will be celebrated for all those who have died especially those whose funerals were celebrated in the past year at Sacred Heart. On Sunday, November 2, the 10:00 Mass at St. John the Baptist Church will be for those whose funerals were celebrated at St. John s and for all the deceased loved ones of the parish. During these Masses we will call to mind those who we have buried and light a candle as a reminder of how they brought the light of Christ into our lives. In the rear of the churches are picture frames. You are invited to take on home and bring it back with the picture of a loved one or loved ones for whom you mourn. It maybe a recent death or one that occurred a while ago. These pictures will be place on the side altars of the churches during November as a way of calling to mind and praying for our deceased loved ones. Please put your name and contact information on the rear of the frame, so we can see that your picture is returned. 4

5 St. John the Baptist Annual Christmas Fair Saturday, November 22, :00 am to 4:00 pm The Committee is busy making plans for this annual fund-raising event and looking for help from everyone in the parish to make it a success. If you can knit, sew or crochet, put together a gift basket, make candles, soaps or crafts, create holiday decoration and gift items, have NEW gift items, bake beans and cookies, jellies and preserves or perhaps donate those unused gift cards, these are just a few ideas that will make the fair a big success. New ideas are always welcome. Coffee and donuts will be served in the morning and a chowder lunch will be served by the Buckley family. The fair will continue after the 10:00 Mass with the drawings taking place. Anyone wishing to help at the fair should contact the committee members: Mary Brown, Dawn Burnham, Patti Byrne, Genevieve Guerin, Sally O Maley or Jane Shaw. 6 The new Cafe and Social Hour Every Sunday after the 8:30AM Mass, we will continue to have our social. Please stop by the Cafe after Mass to enjoy some refreshments and socialize with friends, old and new. All parishioners are encouraged to attend. We will also be having regular conversations that will include religious upbringing tips for parents (of all ages) and other relevant suggestions during the social. This is a great opportunity for parents, grandparents, and those wanting to become parents to share and bond. Sacred Heart Parish Outreach Mission The Sacred Heart Parish community has begun the parish-wide outreach mission. Our mission is to reach new people, those that are no longer attending Mass here, and those that attend Mass but have not participated in any type of ministry and help them feel an integral part of this community. If you know someone who may be a potential guest, please extend a personal invitation to join us; for Mass, coffee, or come to one of our functions. If you have any questions, please contact Joey Gustafson at , Karen Cunningham at , or Chris at the Parish office. The coffee hour after the 8:30 AM Mass has been a great source of meeting and welcoming all. RCIA RCIA has started and we have several interested inquirers. Some thought provoking questions posed are why be a Catholic today? And what does it mean to be a Catholic today?, also, what can I do to receive all of my Sacraments? If you or someone you know is interested, please join us after the 8:30AM Mass on Sunday, October 19 in the rectory (no RCIA this weekend due to holiday schedule). If you have any questions regarding your faith, are looking to receive your Sacraments, or know someone who might be interested in learning more about what is involved in becoming a Catholic, please contact Chris at the parish office if you have questions. Mary s Circle Mary s Circle has begun. We have an interesting lineup with discussions focused on the Mass, the Gospel readings and its relevance to our daily lives, the Saints, and other varied discussion topics. This year we will have a couple of morning retreats, open to all women. Details will follow. Please extend an invitation to someone you know who might be interested in a women centered, faith-sharing group. We have read books, had guest speakers, and enjoyed a couple of social gatherings. Please consider this a personal invitation to consider joining this group of faith-filled women as we explore the different aspects of our faith and how it connects to us in relevant and familiar ways. Coffee, Confections, and Conversation are the orders of the day. Call Chris at the parish office Prayer Shawl Ministry Another group of prayer shawls will be blessed very soon and we are hoping to give them all away to those in need. Whether it is a physical illness, a psychological situation, or you know someone who is suffering from a loss of any kind, why not bring him or her a Prayer Shawl? Prayers and blessings for their needs will surround and comfort them. We are continuing to knit and crochet prayer shawls to give to those in need. Many people have given prayer shawls to family, friends, and loved ones; and have shared with us the peace they feel when they put the prayer shawls around them. If you know anyone who would like a prayers shawl and having a lot of prayers wrapped around them, please let us know. You may contact Chris at the parish office or Gloria Landy, Jane Shaw, Eleanor Hatcher, Sally O Malley, Ann Nadeau, Eileen Hardy, Kathy Anderson, Paige Donohoe, Dorothy Jodice, Ann Henrickson, or Barbara Stasium. The Prayer Shawl ministry meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 4PM in the Sacred Heart Rectory......If you cannot join our ministry, please consider donating money, yarn (preferably soft yarn), or gift bags (to distribute them in). All donations are graciously accepted. We are always looking for more knitters and crochet ers! Experience is not required. Please consider being a part of this ministry. Consider joining us, or making one in the privacy of your home. We have easy to follow patterns. Ministry to the Homebound and Sick Ministry to the Homebound and Sick is growing and it is thanks to your personal connections with those who may be ill and unable to attend Mass. We have an awesome, faith-filled team dedicated to bringing Eucharist to the sick and homebound. Please continue to let us know if you are aware of someone ill, homebound, or alone that would like to receive Eucharist, or a short visit from a fellow parishioner, please contact Chris at the Parish Office and we will make arrangements. Baptism Prep Classes Baptism preparation classes are being held in the Chapel at Sacred Heart Church and is currently offered the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00PM.These classes are designed for parents and godparents of infants. The goal of the class is to help parents become aware of the theological and historical reasons for baptizing your child and the significance of Baptism as a beginning, not an end, to a lifelong commitment. The one hour class explores the purpose of Baptism from both a spiritual and practical standpoint. Parishioners are asked to sign up for the class prior to having their infants baptized. You may sign up at the same time you schedule your baby's baptism. Reservations are suggested. Please contact Chris at the parish office with any questions or concerns. Ministry of Consolation Our parish has a group of volunteers willing to sit and talk with someone after a loss. Please contact Chris at the parish office to schedule a time to meet. We have met with several people in the past year and their response has been very positive. Please consider calling Chris at the rectory to schedule a meeting. 6
