Welcome to Term 1 Welcome back everyone and welcome to all of our new Parish Catechists and Helpers. As we start this school year, your Faith Education Officers (FEOs) offer reflections upon the Year of Mercy, for which materials will be supplied to Coordinators to distribute, and provide practical Lenten teaching tips in the following pages. They also highlight the crucial and year round need to find more Catechists and Helpers. Your FEOs are a wonderful support and ready to help. Please, ask any of us for help: we are here precisely for you and for the sake of the children. I will conclude with thanks to our Archbishop for his support and who wishes to greet you all by way of his words of encouragement on the facing page. With my prayers and best wishes as we prepare for Easter. Pope's Address to Catechists Doug Mawhinney Director - CCD Sydney Fr Michael McLean, Vicar for Education, with Life Member 30 Year Awardees. Fittingly, few hours after our CCD Life Members celebration on 27 November, Pope Francis addressed Catechists in Uganda... Dear Catechists and Teachers, Dear Friends, I greet you with affection in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Teacher. Teacher! What a beautiful name this is! Jesus is our first and greatest teacher. Saint Paul tells us that Jesus gave his Church not only apostles and pastors, but also teachers, to build up the whole body in faith and love. Together with the bishops, priests and deacons who are ordained to preach the Gospel and care for the Lord s flock, you, as catechists, play an outstanding part in bringing the Good News to every village and homestead in your country. I wish before all else, to thank you. You teach what Jesus taught and help parents to raise their children in the faith, and you bring the joy and hope of eternal life to all. Thank you especially for teaching our children and young people how to pray. Because it s so important to teach children how to pray! I know that your work, although rewarding, is not easy. So I encourage you to persevere, and I ask your bishops and priests to support you with a doctrinal, spiritual and pastoral formation capable of making you ever more effective in your outreach. Even when the task seems too much, the resources too few, the obstacles too great, it should never be forgotten that yours is a holy work. And I really want to underline this. Yours is a holy work. The Holy Spirit is present wherever the name of Christ is proclaimed. He is in our midst whenever we lift up our hearts and minds to God in prayer. He will give you the light and strength you need! The message you bring will take root all the more firmly in people s hearts if you are not only a teacher but also a witness. And again I underline this, much more than a teacher, you should be a witness. Your example should speak to everyone of the beauty of prayer, the power of mercy and forgiveness, the joy of sharing in the Eucharist with all our brothers and sisters... I ask all of you catechists to pray for me and to ask little children to pray for me. Omukama Abawe Omukisa! God bless you! Pope Francis 2 CCD Catechist NEWSLETTER

As we start another school year, I greet with you with gratitude for your role in helping our young people to learn the Catholic faith and how to lead lives of self-mastery and solidarity with the poor. As catechists serving in the Archdiocese of Sydney, you are my arms and voices in our state schools; you are, in St Paul s words, stewards of the mysteries, helping to ensure that our young people encounter Christ in His Church and so receive more than any secular ethics course could give them. Your work is of vital importance and God-willing will bear much fruit. I was delighted at the recent Christmas Art Exhibition at St Mary s Cathedral, displaying artwork and written reflections of Year 5 and 6 children from Catholic and public schools. Congratulations to all the students and their catechists who teach them and encouraged their reflection and creativity. Well done! Message from Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP to Parish Catechists by word of mouth and stems from to echo down, to re-sound. As Catechists you have the sacred task of handing on the Catholic Faith in its integrity to our young ones. The Archdiocese has an approved curriculum that provides you with a sure foundation from which to teach. I also encourage you to take advantage of the Archdiocese s CCD training to meet the Education Department s recommendations for practical ongoing training and child safeguarding measures to be even more effective in your catechesis. The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine was established in It has been in the catechesis game for a long time! A number of popes and saints have been directly involved in promoting the Confraternity s work of supporting parish catechists and catechesis. I encourage you to avail yourself of the Archdiocese of Sydney CCD s support: it is there to help you open the hearts of our young people to God and His presence. C Our parishes have 1900 Parish Catechists and 325 Catholic High School Catechists to pray with and teach 25,000 of our parish children who are enrolled in public schools. You are the ones who take Sunday children s liturgies or youth groups, prepare our children and adults for the Sacraments, or teach our parish children enrolled in public schools. Your ministry is centred on the parish, one of the basic cells of the Church. You are an essential part of the Church s new evangelisation. Even when there is only one or two of you! I look forward to greeting you in person at the forthcoming Catechist Gathering and celebrating with you our Archdiocesan Catechist Mass later in the year, when we will recognise the years of dedicated service of our catechists. May God bless you and your work! - We need, however, more of you. Pope Francis said, we need good catechists because catechesis is a pillar of faith education. As you were called to serve in this way, so are others. Encourage others to join you! In its Greek roots, catechesis means instruction CCD Catechist NEWSLETTER 3

All Activity Books have removable take-home extension pages for both Lent and Easter. Please give them to students to take home in Term 1. OUR LENTEN JOURNEY Lent is a traditional time to reflect on our life journey, to ask ourselves once again Where am I going? and How will I get there? Leader: This Lenten season we are called to journey towards God. Let us reflect on how to travel wisely and well, confident of God s companionship along the way. Opening song: Companions on the Journey by Carey Landry. (You could use other reflective music) Scripture Reading: Mark 6: 7-13 Then he (Jesus) made a tour round the villages, teaching. Then he summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs giving them authority over the unclean spirits. And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff - no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses. They were to wear sandals but, he added, Do not take a spare tunic. And he said to them, If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district. And if any place does not welcome you and the people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake the dust from under your feet as a sign to them. So they set off to preach repentance, and they cast out many evil spirits, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them. Leader: Take a moment now to reflect in silence on the scripture reading you have just heard. If you can t take a walking stick or beggar s bag for your journey, what will you take and why?... pause Which of these road signs best describe your current mode of operation on your journey: Yield, Detour, Stop, Railroad Crossing, Curve Ahead? Why is this so?.pause How will you use your traveling time with your class this Lent? pause (Invite spontaneous responses to these reflections from participants or you may like to use the following. Participants could make the response Lord hear our prayer after each.) That each of us will use our gifts and talents to help one another on our journey, let us pray to the Lord. That we will remember to talk to God about the joys and sorrows of our journey, let us pray to the Lord. That we will always ask God to guide us when faced with difficult choices, let us pray to the Lord. For all the people in our world who are forgotten along the way, let us pray to the Lord. Leader: Let us pray together, the prayer that Jesus taught us All: Our Father. CCD Catechist NEWSLETTER 5

FAITH EDUCATION OFFICER Central Area SARAH CHRISTIE It is my absolute pleasure to be welcoming you to another year as SRE teachers in our state schools. It s going to be a busy one as we address the results of the NSW SRE Review and move forward in our mission, and I would like to say thank you in advance for all your cooperation, past and present. I am especially thankful to those of you who submitted your own suggestions and reflections to the NSW Review, and to those coordinators who worked exceptionally hard with me to ensure we had all catechists enrolled in Basic One in order to fulfil our obligations to the state and archdiocese. The state system aside, it s going to be a big year for the Central Area. This year, we are hosting the Annual Catechist Mass at St Mary s Cathedral. I welcome any suggestions for an exceptional parish choir who might be able to sing on the day, as well as any volunteers who might help with roles such as ushering, serving in the hall, or reading. Please get in touch with me via my contact details below. This year our Area Mass will be held at St Felix in Bankstown. The Parish is celebrating its centenary so it s a wonderful tie-in to an already exciting event for everyone at the parish. Please mark it in your diaries and gather with us to give thanks, celebrate our work and connect with one another. Term One is always a great time to conduct recruitment drives and I am happy to lend a hand by offering briefs for parish bulletins or suggestions as to what to say at Mass. I believe the CCRESS DVD is still a great source as it allows the congregation to see exactly what being a Catechist entails, but I also believe in sourcing friends or family members who have some time and who you think will be great for the role. One of our long-serving catechists even did some recruitment at the supermarket, and the person she recruited has been going for over 20 years! This is also the time to clear space in your calendar to continue your learning. Our Accreditation Courses are a great way to learn practical teaching skills, more about the faith and from other people s experiences and connections to it. Often, people don t want to come to the courses but after they begin, they never want to leave. I m holding all Basic, Intermediate and Accreditation at the Campsie Parish Hall and would love to see you there. Looking forward to serving with you, and for you, this year. I hope you have a Happy New Year. Sarah Phone: CCD Catechist NEWSLETTER

FAITH EDUCATION OFFICER Eastern Area ROBERT MILAN The commencement of a new school year provides us as catechists (SRE teachers) with a unique opportunity, the opportunity to make all things new and fresh. Extending this mindset to the classroom to ensure classroom management, class dynamics and overall class functioning is off to a flying start WILL no doubt make our teaching experience a worthwhile and rewarding one. A motto that I had have lived by especially throughout my professional career is the 5 P s: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. Here are some tips to get the 2016 school year off to a flying start: Introduce yourself. Invite the students to introduce themselves. Invite the students to share one thing about themselves, e.g. favourite sporting team or talent, etc. Give each child an A4 sheet of paper and ask them to fold it in half to make a rectangle and write their first name and place in front of them (helps you to remember and learn their names). Issue student books and invite students to write their names on the top right hand corner. Discuss with students the need for rules (especially middle to upper primary students). Establish 2 or 3 basic rules (check with school and classroom for rules). This avoids duplication and re-inventing the wheel. (These maybe laminated and featured in the classroom). In preparation for your first class it is recommended to have the following: A plastic storage container with lid to store books and the Prayer Place material. Spare coloured pencils. Pencils, Erasers, Sharpener (your own white board markers). Prayer Place Material: Cloths in the colours of the liturgical seasons i.e. Green, Violet/Purple, White, Red. A Crucifix (for Kindy a plain cross will do to start we don t want to kill Jesus off before introducing him!) A Bible A candle (battery operated is preferred). DO NOT LIGHT NO MATCHES IN CLASS! Anything else you see necessary for the prayer place, e.g. Saint of the day picture, etc (see Teacher Manual Resource Section or lesson plan for recommendations). Allocate tasks for students each week e.g. distribution of books, prayer place set up, name place sheets set up, etc. Have an enjoyable 2016 and remember the CCD is here to assist you. Accreditation courses are regularly available and MANDATORY for NEW CATECHISTS. A refresher and further professional development is always advisable and encouraged (see pages 14 and 15 for dates). 10 FAITH EDUCATION OFFICER Northern Area CHRIS COX "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy" (Matthew 5:7) Welcome to all Northern Area Catechists for 2016, the Year of Mercy. I hope you had an amazing Christmas and a relaxing break with your family and friends. I welcome all new Catechists and look forward to working with you this year. This Catechist Sunday Pass on the Good News! What good news? the Good News of Jesus Christ! This year, over 25,000 children and young people, primary school through to Year 12 in the Sydney Archdiocese, will learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help bring other parishioners to partake in this great ministry. As you are well aware, being a Catechist allows you to nurture the faith of our young and at the same time you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, I learn so much by teaching! Teaching Catholic Scripture puts your faith into action and you will learn more about it when you start to apply it. When Jesus was choosing His disciples He didn t ask for any formal qualifications but looked into their hearts and simply said, Come follow me and then taught them how to be fishers of men. All He asks is a willingness to trust in Him, to know He has a plan, and to be teachable which is the meaning of the word disciple from the Latin, disco to learn. Sometimes as Catechists we all can feel like Moses with the Burning Bush, questioning our ability, Who am I to lead these people?! (Exodus 3:11). It is interesting to wonder how many might pass by a burning bush quickly with just a cursory glance; but it is only those who stop and wait, knowing their emptiness and need of God, who come to see that the burning bush is not being consumed by the flames. As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said to young people, God takes nothing away and gives you everything when we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return. God s Grace presupposes and builds upon our human nature, opening us up to a new supernatural relationship in Christ, now in this life, wherein nothing is impossible for God, creator of all whom he sends us to meet and teach. Therefore, we should never forget God has destined us for greatness, and He will provide you with the necessary skills to carry out His ministry through being his disciples, by being teachable. St Paul reminds us that God doesn t call the equipped, He equips the called! May the God of peace... equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21) The answer is found with the Holy Spirit who is within you. The Gifts of the Spirit are ready to be used. Just as God uses others to equip you, He will also use you to equip others. I look forward to working with you this year! Yours sincerely, Chris Phone: CCD Catechist NEWSLETTER

FAITH EDUCATION OFFICER Southern Area DENISE HUMPHREYS Welcome to all catechists who are taking Special Religious Education classes in the Southern Area in If you are a new (or not so new catechist) and feel the need for some survival skills please phone me or contact your coordinator for help. During Term1 the Basic Accreditation course will be held on each day of the week including a Saturday. Please remember you can come to any of these sessions at any of the venues. These times and places for Basic Accreditation Course are listed in this newsletter. This year SRE classes will start just as Lent begins and we start our journey to Easter. The following article comes from The Religious Teacher s Journal I feel it can also apply to SRE lesson preparations. Our Lenten journey towards God is like all our journeys. We move over the same ground. We build on the familiar and reach into the yet to be discovered. So as you approach Lent this year do not fall into the trap of thinking, I remember this set of reading or these prayers (or this SRE lesson) I ve heard (taught) it all before! Who you are now is not the you of past years (and your students are not the they of past years). This Lent try to listen with new ears and see with new eyes our God of surprises. I hope to see many of you at your catechist meetings, reflection day, area mass and accreditation courses. All of these activities ware also advertised on the CCD webpage. Please ring or if you need help and I will get back to you. Denise Phone: CLaSSROOM HINT: Starting a new year with a new class can be daunting. So here are a few tips for settling your class. With the Stage One (Infants School) child you need to state what you want them to do not what you do not want them to do. We call this using a positive statement. So below are Five L s for listening you might like to adapt these for your class. We Listen with: 1. our eyes looking (at the teacher) 2. our lips still 3. our legs crossed (students are usually gathered in a group on the floor for instruction) 4. our hands in our laps 5. our ears listening Year 3 children preparing for First Communion at Engadine Parish CCD Catechist NEWSLETTER 11

FAITH EDUCATION OFFICER Western Area TERESA CULJAK Greetings to all in the Western Area, Welcome back to what promises to be another great year in proclaiming the good news. A new start, a new beginning and a new grace of mercy poured out upon the Church. This year, Pope Francis has proclaimed a Year of Mercy. It will be a special year of favour: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and freedom to those in captivity; to proclaim the year of the Lord s favour (Is 61:1-2). The Lord speaks these words through the heart of each catechist. The Spirit of the Lord is upon you. Be not afraid, to speak a word, a gesture to those who have been entrusted to you. The Lord has promised that this will be a year of favour. It is a busy time of year especially for Catechist Coordinators who are desperately trying to fill classes with catechists. If you have family or friends who you think would suit the catechetical ministry, please encourage them to join. It is a year of favour, so we can be bold and invite others to come and see. The Lord is with you! A reminder to all new and existing catechists, that a minimum Basic Level One Accreditation Course is compulsory to teach SRE. If you have yet to attend this course, please book in for Term 1. Course dates are listed on page There will be an opportunity this term to attend the Basic Level One and Level Two Accreditation Courses over five consecutive weeks. The advantage of attending both Level One and Two is increased learning of faith formation and teaching strategies in a shorter time frame whilst journeying with the same friendly catechists for five weeks. Catechists are encouraged to attend both courses, however either course can be attended. May your hearts be open to receive God s wonderful grace and opportunities in this year of favour.
