We celebrate and appreciate our founders, our charter members and every person who, by being involved in this great church, has helped make it what it is today. We rededicate ourselves to the mission of Peachtree Road United Methodist and commit our best selves to the challenges that lie ahead, as we determine what this church will become in the next 90 years.

Founder s Day Litany with strong conviction that a Methodist church was needed in the Buckhead area, retired minister Rev. E.H. Wood led the initiative in 1925 to establish Peachtree Road Methodist Church knowing there were hundreds of Methodists within a one-mile radius. We remember, LORD. Today, our worshippers come from far and wide to worship in spirit and in truth. We thank you, LORD. From the first 19 founders in the spring of 1925, to the first service of public worship on June 7 and through the end of that year, God added to our number. We remember, LORD. This church has grown to thousands and more are joining every year as we worship and serve our Risen Savior! We thank you, LORD. sunday School started with 45 men, women, and children desiring to learn about God and God s Word. We remember, LORD. in 2015, well over 1000 men, women, and children gather in classes to grow in their knowledge of God every Sunday. We thank you, LORD. in the first year of Peachtree Road Methodist Church, the Women s Missionary Society raised $142 to send to missionaries. We remember, LORD. God, you have blessed us abundantly so our local outreach now serves many in the community as well as our global partners around the world in Nicaragua, Kenya, and the Republic of Georgia. We thank you, LORD. ALL: Almighty God, we praise you for our founders who saw the need and for all that has been accomplished in Your Name. Help us to continue the good work to further the Kingdom. 7 Jesus said, The Kingdom of Heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed which a man took and hid in his field, which indeed is the least of all seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest of herbs, and becometh a tree. From small beginnings God s work proceeds. From an organization of nineteen persons meeting in a private home [ninety] years ago there has grown one of the great churches of American Methodism. Rev. Nat Long - The Story of Peachtree Road Methodist Church A Brief History of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church Peachtree Road was organized on April 28, 1925 in the home of Dr. and Mrs. M.T. Salter. We were founded as The Peachtree Road Methodist Church and The Reverend E.H. Wood was named our first pastor. At that first meeting, nineteen people entered their membership in Peachtree Road. They were: Mrs. E.H. Wood, Mr. G.H. Wood Miss Mary Wood, Miss Ruth Wood Mrs. M.T. Salter Dr. F.D. Salter, Mrs. F.D. Cofer, Mrs. C.J. Cofer Miss Josephine Cofer In May of 1925, the new church purchased a lot at the corner of Peachtree Road and Sardis Way. The first public service was held there on June 7, 1925, as was the first Sunday School meeting.

8 The person chiefly to be credited with starting Peachtree Road Methodist Church was the Reverend E. H. Wood, a retired Methodist minister. For many years he prayed for a church of his faith in the Buckhead section. He constantly talked to fellow Methodists and sought to awaken in them a like desire. He inspired small groups to pray for a Methodist Church. In January 1925, theological students from Emory University made a religious survey of an area of one mile s radius around the business center of Buckhead. Hundreds of Methodists were found. It was evident that thousands of people would soon be moving into this territory. The canvass of the community confirmed the belief of the Reverend Mr. Wood and of others that a Methodist Church should here be established. Rev. Nat Long - The Story of Peachtree Road Methodist Church Under the initial seven month pastorate of Rev. E.H. Wood, eighty-eight members were received into the church. They are considered our charter members. From 1925 until 1942, the church held its location at Peachtree Road and Sardis Way. The growth of the church was steady, so additional adjoining lots were purchased and temporary wooden buildings were erected to house the ever-increasing membership. Finally, it became evident that a larger tract of land and more adequate buildings must be provided. In 1941 the church sold our property at the corner of Peachtree Road and Sardis Way and purchased the property where the church stands at 3180 Peachtree Road. We built what was known as The Great Hall in 1942, and held worship services, dinner meetings, and all other church gatherings there until The Great Hall has been in use since then and is now known as Heritage Hall (formerly Hall of Apostles) in the back of the church. Our former Sanctuary, now known as the Moore Chapel was built in 1949, along with the Church School Building. The Sanctuary was opened on Palm Sunday, April 10, 1949 and hosted worship services until we moved into our current Sanctuary in The Church School building continues to host many of our Sunday School classes and is now called the Adult Education Building.

9 Peachtree Road developed a Master Plan in 1992 to guide the expansion of our campus. In 1996, the Evelyn Gordy-Rankin Children s Building opened to house our nursery, children s Sunday School classes and preschool. At the same time, we built The Rollins Center, which houses church administrative and business offices, meeting rooms and the current Youth Lounge. By 1998, Sunday attendance in the old Sanctuary had grown to the point where some worshipers were regularly seated in folding chairs in the Sanctuary and in overflow seating in the Chapel at major holiday services. In 1999, the congregation voted to build our new Sanctuary. We broke ground for a new Sanctuary on May 7, The first service was held on Easter Day, March 31, 2002 and the Sanctuary was consecrated to the glory and worship of God on September 29, This is a great day in the life of our church - a day of commemoration, a day of celebration and a day of consecrating ourselves. Today we commemorate the creation and development of this marvelous, remarkable church which has stood and grown in this area for 90 years. It s not only a day of commemoration, but a day of deep appreciation to the founders, to the charter members, and to every person who, by being involved in this great church, helped it to become what it is today. Today we celebrate our church, which is dear and precious in our hearts. Today we celebrate with our hymns, our songs, our words, and our fellowship. This day would be incomplete if we let it pass without rededicating ourselves to the challenges that lie ahead. As members we are charged with the supreme task of determining what this church will be in the next 90 years. As members we are the past, present and future of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
