James 1:17-27 (Sequential reading, #1 of 5) Wisdom speaks: every good gift is from God (cf. meaning of 1 st Article of Creed) 1) Every act of giving and every gift is from God 2) God s generosity in creation is consistent and purposive 3) We are birthed by Word as first fruits of a new creation 4) God is making good on God s investment in us 5) The implanted Word in you has power 6) Word calls us to be both hearers and doers 7) Know your identity in the Word: as in a mirror, know who you are 8) Hearing and doing conform in not being conformed to the world, but in care and service for others
Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, Reading Returns to Mark. Reprise: cf. 2:23-3:6 : Jesus actions end in plot to kill him. Issues of inside/outside and clean/unclean are serious enough for life and death. For this, this Jesus has to die! 1) Setting: powers from Jerusalem are watching Jesus 2) His behavior is the issue: eating! (cf. chap 3: plucking grain) 3) External traditions are at stake; 5 times reference to not walking/ living according to tradition 4) Issue is the Word: living by the Word of God (cf. 1:45; 2:2; 4 (8 times); 5:36; 7:13, 29; 8:32) 5) It is a matter of lips or hearts 6) It is an occasion that demands Parables: call to Listen & Understand 7) It s about Inside and Outside; it is a matter of the heart (cf. chap. 4; parables have to do with the kingdom 8) The charge: you make void the Word, paying attention instead to the teaching of humans (7:8, 13)
Overall Themes: God comes near to save What will salvation look like: favoritism or love? Even outsiders receive benefits of God s mercy: it is for all Faith is truly seen in acts of mercy It is a matter of the heart And receptiveness appears in surprising places God s mercy breaks out beyond the borders and limits of our imagination or traditions
Isaiah 35:4-7a An imaginary vision of what happens when God comes to save 1) Do not fear: HERE is your God! 2) God s coming is invitation not to fear, but to promise of salvation 3) So, what will salvation look like? 4) Answer: it takes poetry and imagination to take it all in: It will be like leaping, and dancing and singing and waters bursting forth in the wilderness 5) Just imagine!
James 2:1-10 [11-13] (Continues sequential reading, #2 of 5) True Faith is expressed in faithful Hearing and Doing 1) Wisdom asks: what is a true or living faith? 2) It will be seen in how you treat others 3) Partiality or favoritism reveals our true colors 4) Obedience to the true law, the whole law is summed up in loving neighbor as yourself 5) This is the true law of liberty or freedom 6) True faith, faith that is alive, is shown in consistent acts of mercy
Mark 7:24-37 About Insiders and Outsiders continued: it s about the heart, not about external traditions: two stories as a case in point: a woman whose daughter is sick; a deaf man 1) Setting One: The region is foreign Tyre; Jesus wants to hide, no escape. A woman intercedes for her daughter: she is wrong on every count: a woman, a foreigner, wrong birth 2) But she knows how to pray: she kept asking (ask and you shall receive!) 3) Startling response from this Jesus: no way! Not for the dogs! 4) She won t let go: Even the dogs get the crumbs of mercy! 5) The Word is power: for this Word, it has already been done! 6) And so it was: Promise and fulfillment: Jesus Word is confirmed 7) Setting Two: Decapolis, and another outsider: a deaf man 8) Jesus speaks a word, his ears opened (hearing) and his tongue released (speaking); bondage is released 9) Strange commands: Jesus calls for silence, but the more he orders they more they tell it 10) The Word will not be constrained or silenced 11) The final verdict: he has done everything well!
Overall Themes: The key first step is listening to the Word Lord is present to help in midst of my enemies At the heart of confession is the question: Who will we say this Jesus is? The answer has to do with life: saving or losing life Are we with this Jesus who goes the way of suffering and death? The way of the cross?
Isaiah 50:4-9 The Power and Promise of the Word of God Even in the midst of troubles and anguish, the prophet knows and confesses confidence in the power of God s word 1) The teacher s gift: to know how to sustain with the Word 2) First step: the Lord opens our ears to hear the Word 3) Second step: the Lord helps me in times of trouble, so who is there who can stand against me (cf. Rom. 8:31f. Can anything separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus?)
James 3:1-12 (Continues sequential reading, #3of 5) Wisdom s Teaching: Reflections on the double-sided power of God s gift of the Tongue: for blessing or curse. 1) Teachers (those who know wisdom) have a greater accountability 2) Speaking (the Tongue) is serious business for the power it wields 3) Tongue: a risky fire From the same mouth can come blessing or curse
Mark 8:27-38 The Center and Climax of Mark s Gospel Story and Confession. Important to note context. Two key sections are omitted in the lectionary: 1) After the feeding of 4000, the disciples wonder about bread; they still do not understand! (8:11-21) 2) Healing of the blind man (unique, the first time won t work) Do you see anything? (8:22-26) Question mirrors Jesus question to disciples in today s gospel 1) Setting: still in Gentile territory; the place of unbelief 2) The question: who do people say that I AM? Wrong answers 3) YOU! Who do you say that I AM? 4) Peter s Confession: You are the Messiah (first time since verse one of the gospel!! the good news about Jesus the Messiah ) 5) Jesus speaks God s necessity: the Son must suffer, die, be raised 6) Spoke the Word openly (no instructions not to tell this time!) 7) Peter s rebuke for rejecting the Word, God s way (33) 8) Now Jesus teaches about discipleship, following this Jesus 9) Taking up the cross and following is about saving and losing life
Overall Themes: Wisdom s reflections on the world and on central issues of life How do we imagine the world, then things go well or when things go badly Do we still place our trust in the Lord, and imagine that the Lord is on the side of righteousness? Views of life from perspective of righteous; of evil doers Way of following Jesus (discipleship) is often a way of hiddenness and trust Jesus teaching points to his way of Passion, and his role as servant To be a disciple is to follow this Jesus on the way to the cross
Jeremiah 11:18-20 The prophet calls on Lord to protect the righteous and punish their enemies 1) This is a reality check: the Lord has revealed the way of evil doers 2) Good and evil are at loggerheads, and the evil are about seeking to harm the innocent 3) Still, the call of the prophet is to know God s essential justice, and that our call is to trust the Lord in the midst of troubles Wisdom 1:16-2:1, Wisdom speaks of how to deal with the troubles of this life 1) life is full of sorrows and death is the end for all people 2) There is a gulf between righteous and evil doers 3) This is a test: to trust that God is on the side of righteous and that God has a good end in store for the righteous
James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a (Continues sequential reading, #4 of 5) A compendium of teaching on True and False Wisdom. A key understanding is to know the dangers and power of inordinate or uncontrolled wants and desires 1) The big question: Who is wise? And What s to know? 2) Answer: Good works are a mark of one who possesses wisdom 3) Such wisdom comes only as a gift from above (from God) and is marked by peace, gentleness, etc. in contrast to envy, ambition and selfishness 4) Above all wisdom leads to peace 5) While wanting more leads to conflicts and wars 6) The key is to know how to ASK, and then to live in confidence in the gifts of God: God gives the Spirit; God gives grace to the humble 7) So, Draw near to God and place your trust in God
Mark 9:30-37 Jesus Second foretelling of the Passion: The Way of the Servant 1) A story of discipleship; on the way with Jesus toward the cross. Twice the text reminds of being on the way. 2) Again a strange blending of secrecy and hiddenness: he didn t want anyone to know, BECAUSE he is teaching his disciples about the way of the Son of Man 3) Once again: handed over, killed, after 3 days arise 4) Once again: they did not understand the Word and they are afraid to ASK! 5) So Jesus asks for them: What were you discussing? 6) They are silent! Because they were talking about who was greatest 7) Somehow Jesus knows! And he calls disciples and teaches them again: 8) It s about reception; whom do you welcome 9) It s about being a servant: irony: first shall be last and be a servant 10) Just like the little children: to welcome ones who have no power is to welcome Jesus. 11) And to welcome Jesus, is to welcome the one who sent him
Overall Themes: What is our attitude when things don t go right, when we long for the way things were Why does the past often seem better than the present? James gives an image of the caring community of prayer and restoration in the midst of sickness or suffering The disciple calling is to give no offense to the gospel and to the Name of Christ
Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, Moses laments the people s grumbling and longing for the way things were. Again God answers with more gifts and not punishment 1) Setting: Israel s grumbling in the wilderness 2) Longing for Egypt and the good old days of slavery and 3 squares a day 3) If only. they cry; and Moses joins them: Why me? 4) So God promises meat so much meat that it will be coming out of their ears!! 5) And God instructs Moses to organize a distribution of gifts and responsibilities for a more satisfying solution
James 5:13-20 (Continues sequential reading, #5 of 5) The power of prayer in the caring community of the faithful 1) Key instruction: hold on to the power of prayer in the midst of suffering 2) When things are going well: sing 3) When there is sickness: lay hands on people and pray for them 4) Confidence in the power of prayer for healing and forgiveness 5) A vision of a caring community: Confess to one another; pray for one another; live in the testimony and power of the scriptures; bring back those who are wandering or going astray
Mark 9:38-50 Jesus teaches about the dangers of offenses that get in the way of the journey of discipleship and the way of the cross 1) Discipleship is serious business, but who has the proper credentials? Who is legitimate? 2) Disciples bring one who is not on the way, not following with us. Is he a disciple? 3) These questions lead to Series of sayings on discipleship 4) The key is not being a stumbling block (an offense, getting in the way of the good news. 4 times in this passage we hear of offenses (cf also 4:17; 6:3; 14:27, 29) 5) This is serious: it s about entering life or entering the kingdom (3 times; see 43, 45, 47) 6) The call is for disciples who don t lose their saltiness 7) Who live at peace with one another, and who don t let anything get in the way of their following this Jesus 8) The key mark is following and doing in the Name of this Jesus and in so doing to bear the name of Christ
How to treat one another
English Standard Version Summary Mark 9:50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. Be at Peace
