3 PASTOR SUTTON S CORNER By Superintendent Clethen U. Sutton A Church Where You Can Feel the Holy Spirit Superintendent Clethen U. Sutton, Pastor, Miracle Temple C.O.G.I.C. & Administrative Assistant to the Jurisdictional Bishop July is here. Over half of 2014 is gone already. I was pondering over what highlights would be occurring this month on a local level and I thought about Vacation Bible School (VBS). Merriam Webster s Dictionary defines the words in that phrase as follows: Vacation: A period of time that a person spends away from home, school, or business usually to in order to relax or travel Bible: The book of sacred writings used in the Christian religion School: An organization that provides instruction; an institution for the teaching of children; the process of teaching or learning Miracle Temple will be begin VBS this year Wednesday, July 30, 7:00pm. It will be held for 3 nights. This is a period of time in which you can spend time away from home, in a relaxed environment, while fellowshipping with others, having fun and receiving instructions and teachings from the Holy Bible. I am certain many parents have heard their children say these words, I m bored or I don t have anything to do or something to that affect? VBS is an activity that all can enjoy. In addition, I would like to remind our youth of an old saying that I heard coming up, An Idle Mind, Is the Devil s Workshop (Proverbs 16:27). So, let s get busy! You can have fun while staying busy and active. Volunteer, give back to your community ( those less fortunate than you, Start to read a book ( printed text), Spend some quality time with your family, go see a movie with a friend, with your parents permission and/or Pray (spend some quality time with your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ). There is always something positive and constructive to do. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT It s The Little Things That Make A Big Difference: There was a man taking a morning walk at the beach. He saw that along with the morning tide came hundreds of starfish and when the tide receded, they were left behind and with the morning sun rays, they would die. The tide was fresh and the starfish were alive. The man took a few steps, picked one and threw it into the water. He did that repeatedly. Right behind him there was another person who couldn t understand what this man was doing. He caught up with him and asked, What are you doing? There are hundreds of starfish. How many can you help? What difference does it make? This man did not reply, took two more steps, picked up another one, threw it into the water, and said, It makes a difference to this one. What difference are we making? Big or small, it does not matter. If everyone made a small difference, we d end up with a big difference, wouldn t we? Author Unknown Suggested Scripture Reading: Proverbs 16 Clethen U. Sutton, Pastor Superintendent of the West Central District Page 3
4 SEVEN BIBLICAL STEPS OF RESTORING BROKEN FELLOWSHIP God has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships (2 Corinthians 5:18). If you ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care, then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends (Philippians 2:1-2 The Message). Shame on you! Surely there is at least one wise person in your fellowship who can settle a dispute between fellow Christians (1 Corinthians 6:5). I ll put it as urgently as I can: You must get along with each other (1 Corinthians 1:10 The Message). Jesus said, God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. (Matthew 5:9). You are only hurting yourself with your anger (Job 18:4). God has called us to settle our relationships with each other (Corinthians 5:18 The Message). 1. Talk to God before talking to the person What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don t get it. You Kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you did not ask God (James 4:1-2). 2. Always the initiative. Jesus said, If you enter you place of worship and, about to make an offering, you suddenly remember a grudge a friend has against you, abandon your offering, leave immediately, go to this friend and make things right. Then and only then, come back and work things out with God. (Matthew 5:23-24 The Message) 3. Sympathize with their feelings. Look out for another s interest, not just for your own (Philippians 2:4). A man s wisdom give him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense (Proverbs 19:11). Let s please the other fellow, not ourselves, and do what is for his good (Romans 15:2). Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you (Ephesians 4:29). 4. Confess your part of the conflict. Jesus said, First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will se well enough to deal with the speck in your friend s eye. (Matthew 7:5). If we claim that we re free of sin, we re only fooling ourselves (1 John 1:8). 5. Attack the problem, not the person When my thoughts were bitter and my feelings were hurt, I was as stupid as an animal (Psalm 73:21-22). A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire (Proverbs 15:1). A wise, mature person is known for his understanding. The more pleasant his words, the more persuasive he is (Proverbs 16:21). 6. Cooperate as much as possible Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody (Romans 12:18). You re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God s family (Matthew 5:9) 7. Emphasize reconciliation, not resolution Work hard at living at peace with others (1 Peter 3:11). Jesus said, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called to son s of God. (Matthew 5:9). Christ did not indulge his own feelings...as Scripture says: The insults of those who insult you fall on me Romans 15:3).
