HEALING-DISCIPLESHIP #4. Starting an EFFECTIVE healing-discipleship ministry in your church ken b. dyck: pastor/author/founder Freedom Session International Ministries 1. Understand where/how Healing- Discipleship fits in your over-all d ship strategy Where FS fits in the discipleship strategy of the church: Community HEALING - DISCIPLESHIP Discipleship Bible knowledge sp. gifts ministry skills l ship training Alpha friendships entry events wo/men events children/youth HEALING MINISTRIES counseling prayer ministry recovery ministry support groups deliverance 2. Realize how important and how difficult it is: Healing Through Discipleship 2016 Freedom Session Resources 20 Healing-discipleship is important because: it s the most and area of ministry in the church s top 7 priorities: it presents and demands a COMPLETE definition of salvation make whole, set free and deliver. There are three groups of people we need to be concerned about in regards to salvation!! The OBVIOUSLY broken (the hamartolos Luke 7:37) The IGNORANTLY broken ( Simon Luke 7:40-42) The UNsaved, ALMOST saved, USED-TO-BE saved, DISILLUSIONALLY saved, and the WHO KNOWS if they are saved... The church is (one of) the only place(s) that can effectively deal with the SOFTER CORE addictions / unhealthy behaviors that destroy lives and relationships and often lead to more serious and more damaging addictions. Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE Healing-D ship 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 3
Healing-discipleship is difficult because: people are to deal with deeper heart issues. is vehemently opposed to anything that weakens his influence over God s people. 3. Select your program Not all programs are the same; Not all Christian programs are the same. It is the pastor s / leadership s role to discern the program a church will use. Their next job is to make healing-discipleship. 4. Set your ministry target sights on. Start with the BROKEN people you already HAVE in your church. Sexual Abuse: Sexual Addiction: Food Addiction: Shame: Separation/Divorce: Depression: Fear / anxiety: Other: Youth application: 5. Determine one of two launch strategies: a FS PILOT (see page 6) Just go for it! 6. Recruiting the right team: The quality and level of service your team will deliver is directly proportionate to the quality and level of service to which your team is recruited. (see page 7) Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE Healing-D ship 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 4
7. (Training and) Equipping your team 1 8. Recruit the right initial PARTICIPANTS. Look for balance, an environment that communicates healing-discipleship is for everyone. Advertise to and invite the self-help and consciously (obviously) broken people. Refer & insist that those who are coming for counseling take FS. If possible, have your pastor personally invite: o Young adults: single and/or thinking about marriage o Engaged couples & Young married couples o People who ve gone or are going through divorce Personally Invite: o Your friends/small group o One or two elders/year (give them a role) o If possible or necessary, visit the young adults and invite them NOTE: a faith-based healing-discipleship ministry is NOT for everyone. o Not for those under the care of a psychiatrist/psychologist o Not for those unwilling / unable to participate in small group discussion &/or homework. o Extra EGR people. 9. LAUNCH & implement!!! 10. Make FS GRAD a big deal 11. Then start pushing the envelop 12. Fill out and coordinate your Healing TOOL BELT 13. Embrace a Higher Definition of success Have we been successful! That is a slippery word. I can tell you we have been faithful. We have been faithful to love the unlovely and find hope where others only saw brokenness. To the extent that we have been faithful, we have been successful. 1 While attending a FS training live or via video is always helpful, detailed session by session briefings for Facilitators are critical for effective ministry. (see pages 8-9 for sample) These are included in the FS COMPLETE on USB or DVD ministry kits. Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE Healing-D ship 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 5
A Freedom Session Pilot Recruitment Strategy: The following text in italics is what I might use to recruit a pilot team to test the materials *describe the vision & mission We sense God is leading us to begin a healing-discipleship ministry because we have become convinced that Jesus wants us to minister emotional and relational healing. We are becoming tired of promising the abundant life from the pulpit but not showing people how to live free from fear, anger outbursts, escape behaviors, bitterness and shame. We have found a program we feel will empower us to offer this level of freedom and are asking you to help us discern if and how we launch this ministry in our church. *describe the specific role you are recruiting for Initially, we are asking you to fully participate for eight weeks. We will watch the video teaching component together, discuss what we are learning in a gender specific small group and we will each complete a weekly homework assignment that will take you ~ 1.5 hours. At the end of eight weeks we will come together and share any healing or changes God has begun in our hearts and how we should or should not launch such a ministry in our church. Frankly, if God doesn t do anything through this ministry in our own lives, we SHOULDN T offer it to others. If we do decide to launch FS for our congregation, there is a good likelihood we will ask you to be one of our first facilitators. *describe the reasons you are asking this person As we thought about people who were authentic, honest about their own strengths / weaknesses and who genuinely care about others, your name kept coming to mind. *describe the commitment and specific duties/expectations In the case of a pilot launch, we would not be asking any additional specific commitments until the pilot group had a personal and meaningful experience. Then we would spell out the commitment of a Facilitator. *give them some time to think about it and respond I don t want an answer right now. I d like you to pray about it. You can visit the freedomsession.com website if you d like more information. Within the next week, I ll call you (meet with you) and talk more about it. HINT: If you ask high quality and high capacity people to serve on your team, give them an appropriate level of responsibility. i.e. if you are going to ask an elder to participate, make them a facilitator unless they are inauthentic or obviously unhealthy. Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE H-D 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 6
Ministry Team Screening & Interview Questions: 23 When I began in ministry, I was more concerned with filling ministry positions than getting the right people in the right roles. I typically didn t ask enough questions or even know the right questions to ask. Over the years, this is the list of questions I ask in most of my ministry team recruitment and hiring but especially in recruiting Freedom Session Facilitators. Calling: Why are you interested in serving in this ministry? What specifically catches your attention? Character Is there anything in your life that, if brought to light, would discredit your family, this ministry or Jesus Christ? How have you dealt with that issue? Who knows the details? What does accountability practically look like in your life? How is your marriage? How does your husband/wife feel about you being involved in this ministry? Chemistry Describe how you feel about serving under my leadership? Describe your relationship with and/or your attitudes towards the leadership of this church? Do you have any concerns about serving under my leadership or on our team? Competence What are your spiritual gifts as you understand them? How do you feel you would be a positive contribution to this team/ministry? What previous experience do you have in ministry or vocation that you feel will be helpful if asked to serve in this ministry? Did anyone encourage you to serve in this ministry? What did they say? Who could we talk to who has witnessed or experienced you in this or a similar type of ministry? (references) Capacity What other or prior commitments have you made that may conflict with what is being asked of those who serve in this ministry? Do you have any concerns about the level of commitment we are asking? Note: the type of leaders you recruit will largely communicate who your healing-discipleship ministry is for. 2 I believe the five C categories (or at least three of them) originally came from Bill a Willow Creek conference. 3 These questions are not typically used in the pilot launch but for potential FS Facilitators when you are ready to launch. It also gives you another chance to vet any unsuitable facilitators from your initial FS pilot. Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE H-D 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 7
03 SOBER-MINDED and A.L.E.R.T. FACILITATOR BRIEFING Synopsis: Session 03 begins by helping participants understand the full meaning of salvation which includes the idea of being set free, made whole and delivered. By asking how saved people are, we are not questioning a person s eternal destiny or suggesting a works salvation but helping participants realize there are areas in their lives that their faith has not yet affected. These are likely the areas God wants to deal with in FS whereas we tend to avoid them through various escape behaviors that, from this point on, we will call a drug of choice. We all have a most frequent and most damaging drug of choice, behaviors we use to escape or medicate our pain and avoid conflict. Many participants are still in denial about these and will minimize, deny or justify their indulgences. This week s homework is designed to help participants become more honest in this area. A related and second theme in session 03 is defining sobriety much deeper than resisting unhealthy habits and behavior. A unique FS tool called the A.L.E.R.T. Plan gives participants a practical tool to resist indulging their drug(s) of choice and becoming more aware of why they are using them. SAMPLE The final theme we address in this session is masturbation and its unhealthy effects. This is a highly controversial topic and not all will agree with our perspective. However, other than saying don t do it, few openly teach on masturbation and it is a common issue many who attend FS question or struggle with. Rather than taking a sin/not sin approach, Ken focuses on five undesirable consequences habitual masturbation tends to produce. Behind the Mask (page 37) minutes All three Behind the Mask questions are intended to be discussed as a whole group. 1. Use as written. The key point of the question is the because which gives participants a safe way of beginning to expose an area of their life that may not have turned out the way they had hoped. We don t need anyone to go real deep but if an answer is too superficial, follow-up with: How would your life improve if you were that person? 2. Use as written, working your way around the circle. Encourage participants to give a short edition example of what their denial strategy looks like. Thank each member for sharing. 3. Ask all group members to make their commitment to the group by signing the Participation Agreement on page 06. If a group member is unwilling to make this commitment, gently release (dismiss) them from the rest of your Small Group at this point. Do not let them remain in group. Consider: If someone came to Small Group tonight, knowing they would not sign the agreement, they came with confrontational motives. You can use the following text to release them. Thank you for your honesty. We will miss getting to know you in a deeper way but we respect your decision to not make the commitment with the rest of us. Now, we ask that you respect our decision to move forward without you. The rest of our discussion requires the Small Group commitment so I m asking you to honor that. If you still wish to attend the Large Group teaching, please talk with our FS Director to see if that would be possible. Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE H-D 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 8
Session Reflections 20 minutes 4. Read off the opening statement in question 4 as a Large Group and entertain a few responses. Don t spend too long on this question. It is intended for long time church attendees who have never really considered salvation referring as much to our earthly lives and relationships as the afterlife. 5. Use as written, going around the circle. Right now you are only looking for a level. 6. Spend the majority of your Session Reflections time on this question, breaking down into smaller groups of 3-4. If participants didn t have enough time to complete the Moment of Truth questions during the Large Group teaching, you may want to give everyone seconds to read over and add any additional thoughts to the questions before they answer. Homework Review minutes We suggest staying in groups of 3-4 during the entire Homework Review. 7. Use as is. Each participant answers the entire question before moving to the next person. SAMPLE 8. Use as written. Participants will need a good 60 seconds to determine which question to share from. If a participant seems to share lightly, and you feel they trust you, you may want to ask if that was really the most challenging of the questions. Make sure each also answers what they learned about themselves. 9. Use as written, remembering that question 11 has 10 sub-questions. There is no way a participant cannot see any of the issues covered in the sub-questions. For repeat FS attendees, this often reveals the next issue God wants to work on in their lives. To end your Small Group, you could bring your sub-groups (of 3-4) back together to say the Serenity Prayer together but the Large Group teaching ends with the Serenity Prayer so it may feel awkward to repeat it. Instead, consider having each participant ask God (don t call it prayer for now) to help the person on their right (or left) with one of the painful/difficult situations they are facing. We realize some may feel uncomfortable praying or talking to God but if you give them an example and down play the big dealness of it, your Group may respond better than you think. Teaching people to pray and connect with God personally is one of the greatest gifts we can offer them. At the end of the evening, Group Members can exchange contact information (page 07). Track 4: Starting EFFECTIVE H-D 2018 Freedom Session Resources page 9
T hank you for spending the last few hours with me. My greatest prayer has been that you leave encouraged and inspired to look at discipleship and even ministry differently than before. Thank you for allowing me to speak from my personal experience in the ministry tool God has entrusted to me. I realize there are other ministry approaches and tools that God is using to accomplish the same goals. If you are working with a different ministry approach that fits within healing-discipleship, I trust you can apply what you ve learned in your ministry context. If you feel inspired to apply what you learned today and would like to try the Freedom Session & Authentic Living approach, we are making a special offer, valid until February 15. We are discounting our Church Ministry kit (on USB) to the cost of one hour of professional counseling.
