HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN Unity in our relationships with each other when we walk in unity with God. Without a relationship with HIM, everything else just scratches the surface. Begin your relationship with GOD through JESUS CHRIST today. Answer this in your mind...in your personal opinion...what do you understand it takes for a person to go to heaven? The Bible clearly answers this question... IT S A MATTER OF FAITH! F IS FOR FORGIVENESS We cannot have eternal life and heaven without God s FORGIVENESS. Ephesians 1:7a - In Him we have redemption through his blood, and the forgiveness of sins. A IS FOR AVAILABLE Forgiveness is available. It is - Available for ALL. John 3:16 - For God so Loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. But it is not Automatic. Matthew 7:21 - Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. I IS FOR IMPOSSIBLE It is impossible for God to allow sin into heaven. It is impossible for God to allow sin into heaven because God is Loving and just, His judgment is against sin. James 2: because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment! It is impossible for God to allow sin into heaven because every person is a sinner. Romans 3: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But how can a sinful person enter heaven, when God allows no sin? T IS FOR TURN Turn means repent. Turn from something - sin and self. Luke 13:3 - unless you repent, you too will all perish. Turn to Someone; trust Christ only. Romans 10:9 - if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe it in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. H IS FOR HEAVEN Heaven is eternal life. Here and Hereafter. John 14:3 - And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. How can a person have God s forgiveness, heaven, eternal life and Jesus as personal Savior and Lord? By trusting in Christ and asking Him for forgiveness. Take the step of faith described by another meaning of FAITH. FORSAKING ALL I TRUST IN HIM If you would like to accept Christ right now, you can pray a prayer like this. Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner and have displeased You in many ways. I believe you died for my sin and only through faith in your death and resurrection can I be forgiven. I want to turn from my sin and ask you to come into my Life as my Savior and Lord. From this day on, I will follow you by living a life that pleases you. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for loving and forgiving me. How to become a Christian adapted from the FAITH presentation from Lifeway s Essential Connections Magazine. 3

MONDAY ICT/ Group Time How would you define real faith? What type of talk is coming out of your mouth? In the locker room, on the field, in your classrooms, at home, through your texts? Is it honoring Jesus and building up others? What actions are you personally taking to love the least of these? What types of pollution are all around you in your everyday life? What are you doing to practice pure and faultless religion that is pleasing to God? ENCOUNTERCAMP2014 7

MONDAY / Face Time James 1:19-27 Doer of the Word According to James the most fundamental element to authentic Christian Living is practicing what the Word of God teaches. We live in a world that is consistently becoming more and more hostile to the simple principles that are upheld in Scripture. Things like, marriage, family, sexual orientation, life, and moral values are all being attacked by secular humanism. For this reason, it is extremely important for God s people to actually live out the Bible like never before. James give us two principles that can help us become a Doer of the Word. Receive the Word - Read James 1:19-21 v James, here in these verses, isn t so much addressing the issue of anger as much as he is dealing with the issue of listening. Notice his progression turn on your listening skills, turn off your speaking skills, turn off your anger. James is describing a good student. By Jewish standards a good student was someone who listened, didn t say much, and didn t attempt to argue all the time. v. 21 In this verse James challenges his audience to do two things. 1. Reject all forms of corruption and ungodliness. 2. Receive the Word of God. Once a person takes the posture of a good student they are ready to receive God s Word so long as they are willing to turn away from the sin and corruption the world has to offer. How can you take the posture of a good student in order to allow God to teach you through the Bible? Why do you think meekness is an important part of receiving God s Word? What steps will you take to begin receiving God s Word? Apply the Word - Read James 1:22-25 v. 22 For James it is not enough to simply receive the Word of God and to never apply it. For this reason he exhorts his audience to be doers of the Word! Imagine you teach a child to tie their shoes. You work with them for hours on how to master the skill of shoe tying. They receive your instruction and can even tie their own shoe, with you by their side. But then, when left on their own, they refuse to actually tie their own shoe! How frustrating! It is not enough to be taught something. A person must be able to practically use their knowledge. James instruction is clear DO what the Bible teaches! v James then describes the dichotomy between someone who actually practices what the Bile teaches and someone who doesn t. How foolish is it to be instructed by the Bible but to never apply it? What does James say about people who actually apply scripture to their life? 8

TUESDAY ICT/ Group Time How are you tripped up by the dangers of deception? What are some of the things you are being deceived by? How can you know the truth? Was there anything this morning that was said that caught your attention? What does God want you to surrender to? ENCOUNTERCAMP2014 9

TUESDAY / Face Time At first glance, it may appear that James completely undermines much of the New Testament that teaches Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. However, when placed in proper context this passage isn t teaching on the doctrine of salvation, but rather James is challenging his audience in the area of Christian Living. So here are two simple principles that can help us make sense of this passage 1) Belief determines Behavior & Behavior reveals Belief. In other words, what a person believes inwardly will always eventually be made evident with their actions. 2) Paul s use of the word justified and James use are different. Even though they both use the same Greek word dikiaovw, which is translated into English as justified. Paul uses it to mean saved or declared righteous, whereas James uses it to mean vindicated or authenticated. James 2:14-17 A faith worth having v. 14 James opens this section with a rhetorical question that serves as a summary for the entire section. What good is a faith that is not accompanied by works? It is of no value at all. Can that sort of faith save a person? NO! It s not genuine faith. For James, true biblical faith is a faith that produces action. He is not saying a person is saved by that action but rather if good deeds are not produced then the person s faith was never genuine to begin with. v. 17 This verse acts as a bookend to verse 14. James makes a declarative statement. If faith is divorced from works then it is dead not genuine and useless. Does good works save a person? What is the one and only condition of salvation? James 2:14-26 Faith and Works What should always be evident in a person s life that has genuine faith? Take some time to reflect. Ask yourself if your faith in Christ is genuine. James 2:18-20 A false faith v Here James gives another example of passive faith/belief. He challenges the reader to show him their faith apart from any sort of action. However, he is more that willing to demonstrate his faith in Christ through godly action.secondly, in verse 19 he shows how passive faith/belief simply will not do. He explains how believers and demons have a commonality in their faith or belief systems. Demons for example, like the believer, are very aware that there is only one true God. However, demons obviously have a faith that is passive and divorced from good works. James uses this illustration to show the reader once again that faith that is divorced from works is according to verse 20, useless. The right belief is certainly important, but why must it be accompanied with right action? 10

WEDNESDAY ICT/ Group Time What was the main idea this morning? What does this look like to live this out? What in your life do you need to give up to live this out? Was there anything this morning that was said that caught your attention? What are you hoping God will do in your life this week? ENCOUNTERCAMP

WEDNESDAY / Face Time Remember, for James authentic Christian Living is of supreme importance. After all, what good is correct belief without correct behavior. James believes that a person s faith should correspond with a person s actions. Here in this passage James gets even more practical regarding Christlikeness in everyday behavior speech. Jesus said, Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). For James, the way a person speaks is fundamental as it reflects the inward spiritual condition of a person. James 3:1-5a The Greatness of the Tongue v. 1-5a James wants to point out to his audience just how powerful a person s speech really is. First, a person s speech is the mark of maturity vs In fact, he explains that most should not desire to be teachers of scripture apparently speaking to the office of pastor, because many are unqualified due to their inability to control their speech. Because pastors will be judged by Christ more harshly many/most should avoid a teaching ministry altogether. Again, this simply highlights how important speech and Christian Living are connected for James. Finally, in verses 3-5, he compares the greatness of speech to that of a horse s bit and a ship s rudder. In the same way a tiny bit can guide a great horse so a man s tongue guides his life. Equally, the way a tiny rudder guides a great ship so a man s tongue directs his life. James is simply pointing out the greatness and the importance speech plays in regards to the overall direction of our lives and behavior. This is of course reflected in verse 5. Speech is the instrument of control and direction for a person s life. Why is a person s speech such a powerful thing? How can the words of your mouth direct, guide, and impact your life? James 3:5b-12 Illustration about Controlling our Speech Whereas the previous metaphors, horse s bit & a ship s rudder, were used to emphasize the great importance of a person s speech and how it directs one s life, this next metaphor is used to teach a person to control their speech. vs. 5b-6 Wild Fires In verse 5b, James changes his emphases from guidance to damage. A small spark can destroy a huge forest. According to James a man s speech is likened to that small spark that can create a fire. James has some pretty harsh things to say about the tongue. It is a world of unrighteousness, stains the whole body, and can set a person s life on fire. How can a person s words behave like a fire? How do you need to change your speech to honor God? James 3:1-12 Speech 12

THURSDAY ICT/ Group Time What was the main idea this morning? What does this look like to live this out? What in your life do you need to give up to live this out? 15 THURSDAY / Face Time James 4:1-12 Worldliness What is worldliness? To be worldly essentially refers to partaking in the values, desires, perceptions, attitudes, and behavior that characterize unredeemed human cultures it is the acceptance of the values and assumptions of a society that has no place for God. Christians fighting worldliness is a very real concern, especially for James. Believers must do everything to live for the Kingdom of God and to resist the kingdom of the enemy as described above. Without question, this is a battle that is fought and either won or lost everyday in the life of every Christ follower. James turns his attention to this important issue. James 4:1-3 Human passion the cause of worldliness In verse 1, James offers the first marker of worldliness fighting among believers. According to Jesus in John 15 there is a direct connection between the believer s love for the Lord & the believer s love toward each other. Here James identifies this connection. When two Christian s quarrel with each other it is a sign of worldliness in that there is an unhealthy relationship between the believer and Christ first and foremost. James gives us the reason behind this corruption human passion. More specifically it is the lust of the human heart or as Paul would often describe our sin nature. According to James our human passion to live for ourselves at the expense of others is the cause for murder, covetousness, and fighting. Finally, at the end of verse 2 & verse 3 he explains that the reason why believers give into their sin nature is due to a lack in trust in God. Refusal to ask God to provide, bless, protect, etc. is nothing more than a lack of trust. How often does a person battle their human passions or sinful nature? James 4:4-5 Friendship with the world the result of worldliness In verse 4 James charges his audience of spiritual adultery. When a believer gives in to their sinful passions they backslide and commit spiritual fornication with the world! James makes it clear in the rest of verse 4 that God s Kingdom and the World are totally opposed to one another. Therefore, when a believer embraces worldliness they are in effect turning their back on God, because a person cannot be a friend with both the World and the Lord. James then puts out that God is jealous for his people in the same way a husband is jealous for his wife. This is the good type of jealousy. This type of jealousy defends purity and holiness. What happens to a person s walk with God when they give into their sinful passions? James 4:6-10 drawing close to the Lord overcoming worldliness How can you overcome worldliness? What can you do to draw near to the Lord? What should be your response when you know you have sinned? 14
