COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course emphasizes the importance of the work relationship for a missionary among pastors, churches, and other missionaries, as well as the delicate area of working with nationals on the field. II. RATIONALE: A. Philosophical: 1. God: The student must realize that only as he develops a servant s heart and attitude, can he effectively work with others and have a God-honoring ministry. He must possess the mind of Christ in all his dealings with his fellow Christian workers. 2. Bible: God has given to us the supreme example in His Son in His life and ministry. It is also exemplified throughout the Scriptures through countless examples of those who were the true servants of the Lord. 3. Church: God has left His plan of World evangelism to the church with the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish it. He has called us the church His Body and expects us to function as one. Only as we correctly interact with one another can we function correctly as His Body here on earth. B. Practical: Each student must see and realize that the greatest hindrance to the work of the Lord is His children not being able to work together to reach the world with the Gospel. Our task is to be one of unity, not division in our outreach. This can only be done as we serve one another with a servant s heart! III. PREREQUISITES: Read the introduction and first chapter of two texts prior to the first day of class (see #IV, items B and C)

Ministering Cross-Culturally:An Incarnational Model for Personal Relationships. Grand Rapids, V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: A. Academic 1. Students will read the Three texts as outlined in the syllabus (see Course Outline). Note: Chapter1 of text; Ministering Cross Culturally must be read before class begins Jan 14, Using the text, Building Bridges Not Walls, the student is to answer the questions dealing with Personal Application in each chapter (do not answer the group activity sections) and be ready to hand this in after discussion each Tuesday. 3. Read Handouts as assigned related to Interpersonal Relationships in A Cross-Culture Setting. 4. Notes on each lecture and assignments (by date) shall be kept in a spiral notebook. B. Attendance policies: 1. A maximum of four (4) absences will be allowed for any reason with the exception of administrative absences. Any student missing more than four (4) classes will receive an F. 2. If a student is more than ten (10) minutes late to a class or leaves more than ten (10) minutes early, he/she will be counted absent. 3. Three (3) tardies will constitute an absence and will detract from the total allowable absences. 4. If a student arrives to class after attendance has already been recorded, he/she must speak to the instructor immediately following the class in order to verify his/her attendance was properly recorded. Attendance records will not be changed retroactively.

4 Page 4 C. Test Make-up Policies: 1. Make-up quizzes will only be permitted if the absence is excusable (sickness, death in the family, jury duty, or an emergency). 2. A note must be given to the teacher immediately upon returning to class stating the nature of the absence. 3. All make-up quizzes should be scheduled within a week of returning to class. 4. Please come to Mr Thompson s office to make up quizzes. 5. Make-up tests will not be given. 6. No major exams (i.e., mid-term or final exams) will be taken unless the absence results from extenuating circumstances which are approved by the administration. VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES: A. Cognitive 1. Students will learn to identify the causes of missionary ineffectiveness. 2. Students will learn how to restore relationships and promote unity. B. Affective 1. Students will learn to speak the truth in love. 2. Students will learn to communicate better with those who strongly disagree with their points of view. C. Psychomotor: None VII. COURSE OUTLINE: A. The question and answer method will be applied to initiate student involvement. C. The discussion method will be used to reinforce principles for application. IX. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING; A. All assignments, projects, quizzes and exams will be given a point value. The total points possible and the total points earned will be used to determine the numeric average.
