6 Four derives its meaning from creation - it is the creation number The number four is symbolic of earthly completeness. On the fourth day of the creation week, God completed the material universe - He brought into existence the sun, the moon, and all the stars. Four is the only number in which the number of letters used to spell the number are the same as the value of its name

7 Four derives its meaning from creation - it is the creation number Four physical elements: Earth, Wind, Fire & Water Four things make up the universe: Time, Energy, Space & Matter Four directions: North, South, East & West Four seasons of the year: Fall, Winter, Spring & Summer Four phases of the moon: First, Half, Full & Last Four divisions of the day: Morning, Noon, Evening & Night Four dimensions: Length, Width, Height & Time

Roman soldiers divided up Jesus clothes into four parts God on earth: miracles, wonders, signs & gifts of the Holy Spirit The Bible also has ten references to the Four Winds. The four angels at the four corners of the earth (Revelation 7) The 4th Commandment points to the creative week: remember and keep God's holy Sabbath day

18 Each of the four Gospels focus on a unique aspect of the sacrifice and ministry of Jesus Christ: Matthew's focus is on Christ being the son of David and a King Mark highlights the suffering servant aspect of his ministry Luke showcases him as the Perfect Man John proclaims Jesus is the One and Only begotten Son of God.

Mark became a disciple of Peter --- calls Mark his son 1 Pet 5:13 Mark came from Cyrene in Libya, and was a cousin of Barnabas Mentions Rufus (son of Simon of Cyrene) Paul names in Rom 16:13

23 Mark accompanied Paul & Barnabas on the 1st missionary journey His departure to Jerusalem disappointed Paul, causing a conflict and parting with Barnabas (Acts 15:36-40) Paul & Mark later reconcile (Col 4:10) (2 Tim 4:11) --- Paul says Mark is useful in service Paul also refers to Mark s mother, Mary, as his own John Mark is credited with bringing Christianity to Egypt

25 The Audience Mark s purpose was to write down the Gospel as Peter would have presented it to the Romans, or Gentiles reasons for this belief: The use of Aramaic expressions (Abba, Golgotha, Talitha koum, Ephphatha, etc.) The explanation of Jewish customs The Law is not mentioned, and the OT is only quoted once

26 Mark omits much of what Jesus taught, focuses on what He did More miracles recorded in Mark than any other gospel 97% of Mark is duplicated in Matthew; 88% is found in Luke Mark's writing style is vivid and non-intellectual Immediately used frequently 40x (40 in rest of NT) Easy-to-understand account, emphasizing how suffering and loss enhances faith and salvation

MARK Unique to the NT: Sabbath for man, not man for Sabbath - Mark 2:27 Unique to the NT: Jesus is called "the son of Mary" - Mark 6:3 Mark is the only gospel where Jesus is called a carpenter - Mark 6:3 Many of the teachings of Jesus are absent Only 1 OT reference (about John the Baptist) - Mark 1:2-3 Mark does not describe appearances by Jesus after the Resurrection? The last 12 verses of Mark???
