1 Educational Ministry of the Church (6CE514) Reformed Theological Seminary/Washington 2 credit hours Spring 2015 Instructor: Geoffrey M. Sackett gsackett@rts.edu Wednesdays, 2:00pm 5:00pm February 4 April 15 (9 sessions) 1. Course Description This course considers the ministry of the church in building mature believers in the Lord Jesus, from the point of view of scripture, theology, history, and current practices and models. We will also consider the role of home-life in introducing and nurturing faith, and the relationship of the Christian home and the church to other spheres of instruction and influence. 2. Course Objectives To appreciate the covenantal character of the educational ministry of the church To learn principles for faithful Christian education in the church and in the home To appreciate that Christian education involves growth in knowledge, wisdom, and piety 3. Office Hours I love to meet with as many students as I can. Please contact me to make an appointment. 4. Course Expectations It is crucial that students attend each class session. Assignments are due on the dates noted below. No extensions will be granted unless a prior arrangement with the professor is made. 5. Required Readings a. J. I. Packer and Gary A. Parrett. Grounded in the Gospel (Baker Books, 2010). b. St. Augustine. The First Catechetical Instruction (Paulist Press, 1946), but any edition is fine. 1

4 Course Objectives Related to MDiv* Student Learning Outcomes Course: Educational Ministry of the Church Professor: Geoffrey Sackett Campus: Washington Date: 10/29/2014 MDiv* Student Learning Outcomes In order to measure the success of the MDiv curriculum, RTS has defined the following as the intended outcomes of the student learning process. Each course contributes to these overall outcomes. This rubric shows the contribution of this course to the MDiv outcomes. *As the MDiv is the core degree at RTS, the MDiv rubric will be used in this syllabus. Articulation (oral & written) Scripture Reformed Theology Broadly understands and articulates knowledge, both oral and written, of essential biblical, theological, historical, and cultural/global information, including details, concepts, and frameworks. Significant knowledge of the original meaning of Scripture. Also, the concepts for and skill to research further into the original meaning of Scripture and to apply Scripture to a variety of modern circumstances. (Includes appropriate use of original languages and hermeneutics; and integrates theological, historical, and cultural/global perspectives.) Significant knowledge of Reformed theology and practice, with emphasis on the Westminster Standards. Rubric Moderat e Minimal None Minimal Mini-Justification Assignments test students knowledge and ability. Scripture is the foundation upon which we build, but we will not do much exegesis. Reference is made to the Reformed symbols, theology, and practice. Sanctificatio Demonstrates a love for the Triune God Love for God and love for his 4
5 n that aids the student s sanctification. people are major goals of this course. Desire for Worldview Burning desire to conform all of life to the Word of God. Worldview figures prominently in this course. Winsomely Reformed Preach Worship Shepherd Church/Worl d Embraces a winsomely Reformed ethos. (Includes an appropriate ecumenical spirit with other Christians, especially Evangelicals; a concern to present the Gospel in a God-honoring manner to non-christians; and a truth-in-love attitude in disagreements.) Ability to preach and teach the meaning of Scripture to both heart and mind with clarity and enthusiasm. Knowledgeable of historic and modern Christian-worship forms; and ability to construct and skill to lead a worship service. Ability to shepherd the local congregation: aiding in spiritual maturity; promoting use of gifts and callings; and encouraging a concern for non-christians, both in America and worldwide. Ability to interact within a denominational context, within the broader worldwide church, and with significant public issues. Minimal None Effort is made to show appreciation for those who may differ from us. Students are encouraged to think pastorally about the teaching ministry of the church. Learning how to interact with the broader culture is a main objective of this course 5
