6 CIVIC AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT Enormous grass roots involvement in volunteering, philanthropy and local support Charities (54,800) run by people who want to do good for others Australia shaped and defined by volunteering (eg RSLC, SES, CWA, RSL) Strong local leadership, including in times of crisis Need for effective operation, adequate accountability and good governance
