4 In the Spotlight: Santorum's 'Christian values' don't include tolerance - Ca of 2 4/2/2012 1:28 PM Special to The Bee Published Sunday, Mar. 25, 2012 I once saw the political comedy troupe Capitol Steps perform a song-and-dance routine entitled "My God Is Better Than Your God," which strikes me as an appropriate theme for Rick Santorum's Republican presidential campaign. Religion has often been an issue in presidential politics. As far back as 1800, Thomas Jefferson was accused by Alexander Hamilton of harboring a plan to burn all the Bibles if Jefferson became president. John F. Kennedy was forced to defuse his Catholicism as an issue in 1960 by proclaiming his belief in the separation of church and state to an audience of protestant ministers in Houston, a speech that Santorum has said made him want to "throw up." But aside from televangelist Pat Robertson's flirtation with a presidential race in 1988, I don't recall a candidate ever making religion a centerpiece of his campaign to the extent Santorum is doing in his apparent quest to impose his unbending religious views on the rest of the country. Conservative and evangelical Christians form the bulk of his support, drawn to his blustery self-righteousness; his declarations of Satanic influence in all walks of American life, from colleges and universities to politics; and his charge that President Barack Obama is conducting a war on religion. Oddly, he's on the same glide path that led to a 700,000-vote defeat in his U.S. Senate re-election bid in 2006, when he lost among virtually every demographic group in Pennsylvania except evangelicals and conservatives in rural areas. But he plows blithely on, much to the dismay of mainstream Republicans. His supporters routinely cite his "Christian values" as the reason for their enthusiasm about his candidacy. An Illinois voter told USA Today that he was not sold on Mitt Romney, a Mormon, and that Santorum is "close to a direction I can probably take" because of his "Christian values," which raises the question of just what the candidate and his backers mean when they talk about those values. There are Christian values in the Biblical sense, and there are Christian values in the Santorum sense, and the two do not necessarily bear any resemblance to each other. The words "Christian values" don't appear in the New Testament. But drawing on the teachings of Jesus, it is pretty obvious what they are compassion, love, tolerance, humility, forgiveness, a rejection of self-righteousness. Obama offered his take on values at a recent campaign stop in Illinois. "Let me tell you about values," he said. "Hard work is a value. Looking out for one another, that's a value. The idea we're all in this together, that I'm my brother and sister's keeper, that's a value. Caring for our own, that's a value. Making sure our seniors can retire with dignity and respect,

But "Christian values" as used by Santorum and the religious right has become code for something entirely different. Translated, those words in a political context have come to mean a moral certitude that includes intolerance of other religions, opposition to abortion regardless of circumstances, opposition to gay rights, promotion of intelligent design over evolution, and support for prayer in the public schools. "I don't believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute," Santorum has said. "The idea that the church can have no influence or involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country." He hasn't spelled out which church should have that influence. But he has challenged the idea advanced by Romney that the theological tenets of Mormonism are no different from traditional Christianity, and he sat by a few days ago at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church in Louisiana as its minister, the Rev. Dennis Terry, introduced him by declaring that America was "founded as a Christian nation" and those who disagree should get out. "We don't worship Buddha, we don't worship Muhammad, we don't worship Allah," said Terry. Santorum later told reporters that Terry was speaking for himself and was free to say whatever he wanted. The real irony of Santorum's appeal to evangelicals and the religious right is that more than 50 years ago, those same forces of fundamentalism were united against the idea of a Catholic president, which prompted Kennedy's eloquent Houston speech. Santorum not only is a devout Catholic but has embraced one of the most radical arms of Catholicism, Opus Dei, yet the heirs of the fundamentalists who were so suspicious of Kennedy seem untroubled that Santorum once said it is "absurd" to leave Catholicism aside in conducting politics. These same fundamentalists have been notably silent about David Terry's rant even though they were outraged four years ago over controversial sermons delivered by the Rev. When we are young we impatiently count the days to birthdays, vacations, family outings, and the weekend. It seems like time takes forever to pass; we sigh at the laziness of time. To a child, thoughts of a Kingdom to come seem very far away. As we get older, things change, albeit slowly, until one day we suddenly realize that ten years have slipped away almost unnoticed. We were busy finishing trade school, getting a job, finding a spouse, buying or building a home, starting a family, caring for aging parents. Evangelistic endeavors have not always been on our front burner, in fact, at times there s barely been enough room on the back burners. This, of course, is not always the case; many Christian folk devote their entire lives to the sharing of the Good News of the work of Christ, and the only time that they wish would pass Time and tide wait for no man. But, unlike time, at least the tide returns. Unknown. quickly is their sojourn here on earth; like prisoners in their cells, marking off the calendar looking forward to their day of release. We know neither the day nor the hour of our Lord s return; we just pray for strength to endure the course, a course which seems to offer continuing distractions and obstacles. Like soldiers, we continually guard ourselves against the tactics of the enemy while seeking to set his captives free. But we re running out of time. Soon all the sand will have passed through the glass. If we re going to get busy, NOW is the time. Clear the stove and start rattling the pans that matter. A glance at the daily news, both at home and abroad, tells us that the time is at hand.
