2 Leader BIBLE STUDY Use Week of:november 30, 2014 Zechariah s son, John, lived in the wilderness. John s ministry began when God s word came to him, and he began preaching near the Jordan River. John worked to get the people ready for the coming of Jesus, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy, A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness (Isa. 40:3). 4 John called the people to repent of their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River. John also instructed the people on right living. (See Luke 3:10-14.) Some of the people suspected that John might be the Messiah, but John insisted, One is coming who is more powerful than I (Luke 3:16). Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized by John at the Jordan River. Wait a second. John was calling people to a baptism of repentance. Who needs to repent? Sinners. But we know Jesus never sinned. (See Heb. 4:15; 2 Cor. 5:21.) So why did Jesus come to be baptized? John was right when he said, I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me? (Matt. 3:14). Commentators ideas vary about why Jesus was baptized. Perhaps He was affirming John s work. Maybe He was identifying with sinners or showing them how they would be saved through His death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus answered John, Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness (Matt. 3:15). In the Book of Acts, the apostle Paul said, John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who would come after him, that is, in Jesus (Acts 19:4). John s baptism signaled the coming of the Holy Spirit. Christian baptism signals that the Spirit has come. Baptism reminds us that when we trust in Jesus, we die to sin and come into a new way of life a life lived for Jesus. (See Rom. 6:3-4.) Preschool Worship Guide Unit 24 Session 4 1

4 The BIBLE STORY Jesus Was Baptized Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:1-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:19-34 John the Baptist lived in the wilderness far away from the city. His clothes were made out of camel s hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. When John was hungry, he ate locusts and wild honey. When John was an adult, he began telling the people around him, Repent and be baptized! God s kingdom is coming. It is almost here! People wondered about John. Who are you? they asked. I am not the Messiah, John said. Who are you, then? the people asked. Many years before John lived, Isaiah the prophet had said, There is someone shouting in the wilderness. He says, Get ready for the Lord; make way for Him! John was the man Isaiah had talked about! John was born with a very important job. He was supposed to get people ready for Jesus, the Messiah God promised. People listened to John, and they started to repent; they turned away from their sins and asked God to forgive them. Then John baptized them in the Jordan River. John told them, Someone more powerful than I will come after me. I am not good enough to even untie His sandals. John also said, I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Meanwhile, Jesus was in the place called Galilee. He went to see John the Baptist at the Jordan River. Jesus asked John to baptize Him. John was surprised. He didn t think he should baptize Jesus, and John tried to stop Him. John said, I need You to baptize me. Why do you want me to baptize you? John only baptized people who confessed their sins. Jesus never sinned! Jesus said, Let me be baptized. God says this is the right thing to do. So John baptized Jesus. When Jesus came up from the water, the heavens suddenly opened. Jesus saw God s Spirit coming down on Him. The Spirit was like a Preschool Worship Guide Unit 24 Session 4 3
5 dove. Then a voice came from heaven. This is My Son, the voice said. I love Him, and I am very happy with Him! Christ Connection: Jesus never did anything wrong, but He was baptized like sinners are baptized. Baptism reminds us that Jesus died and came back to life. People who know and love Jesus should be baptized too. 4

Open one to the Book of Matthew, the second to Book of Mark, the third to the Book of Luke, and the last to the Book of John. Give each child a strip of paper with Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John on it. Guide her to place the name strip with the appropriate Bible. Say The Bible tells us that John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. We can read this story in four different books of the Bible Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Who baptized Jesus? John baptized Jesus. megaphones paper towel tubes Make loud sounds Demonstrate how to cup your hands around your mouth to make your voice louder. Why did Jesus want to be baptized? (God said it was the right thing to do. Jesus always obeyed God.) 6. Who baptized Jesus? John baptized Jesus. 7. Should people who know and love Jesus be baptized? (Yes!) Sing the key passage or unit theme song. Preschool Worship Guide Unit 24 Session 4 9
9 Pray Ask children to share short prayer requests, and then pray, thanking Jesus for showing us how to obey God. Pray that the kids will one day put their faith and trust in Jesus as their Savior, and then follow with believer s baptism. Missions story Preschoolers may have questions about baptism. Some children may have never witnessed a baptism before. Remind kids that when a person is baptized, he or she goes under the water and then comes up again. This is a picture of a person s sins being washed away. Say Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River. People today might be baptized in a river, lake, ocean, or baptistry. Show the Baptisms missions video. Invite kids to talk about what they saw in the video. Allow volunteers to share about a time they saw someone be baptized. Be prepared to answer any questions preschoolers raise about baptism and what it means to become a Christian. Emphasize that a person doesn t become a Christian by being baptized; baptism is a way a Christian shows others that he or she trusts in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Play Follow-the-Leader Choose a child to be the leader. Encourage him to perform an action such as twirling around, standing up, or hopping on one foot. Guide the other kids to follow the leader. Talk to the kids about how we follow Jesus example in being baptized because Jesus always does what God tells Him to do. We should obey like Jesus. Follow church security rules for dismissing children. 10
