This church is a place of prayer and encounter with God. The stones of these walls have sheltered people seeking the presence of the Holy One for almost two centuries. This place of worship has been made hallowed by the prayers of generations and you are welcome to join your heart and voice to theirs. St John s is an inclusive community of faith in the Anglican tradition: we welcome saints and sinners, people of faith and of no faith, people who are sure they know everything and those who are full of questions. Men and women may share equally in the life and leadership of our church and we worship with and serve people of different ethnicities, politics, gender expressions, economic circumstances, and abilities. This church belongs to God, so all of God s children are welcome here.

2 We acknowledge that we are in the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabe, adjacent to the territory of the Haudenosaunee, on whose land and by whose waters we gather by the Williams Treaty to worship, listen, learn, share, and heal together in the name of our Creator, the Holy One of Blessing. They are before the throne of God, and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence. Sine Nomine People People There is one body and one Spirit, There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all. Rejoice, people of God, praise the Lord! Let us keep the feast in honour of all God s saints, in whose victory the angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God. Prayers of Penitence Since we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, looking to Jesus in penitence and faith. 6 The Congregation stands. The addresses the Congregation. Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? We will. The Prayers of Intercession are offered by members of the congregation. They reflect the needs and concerns of the local church and community, and of people in various kinds of need, sickness, or adversity throughout the world. At a celebration of baptism, we especially pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit on those about to be baptized. Water is poured into the font to be blessed. We baptise with water because John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan. Prayers of Intercession United in the company of all the faithful and looking for the coming of the kingdom, let us offer our prayers to God, the source of all life and holiness. The Leader concludes each petition and the Congregation responds as follows: Leader Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Leader We give you thanks for the whole company of your saints in glory, with whom in fellowship we join our prayers and praises; by your grace may we, like them, be made perfect in your love. Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honour and power be to our God for ever and ever. Amen. Thanksgiving over the Water The Lord be with you. People And also with you. People Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, almighty God and Father, for by the gift of water you nourish and sustain all living things. Blessed be God for ever. We give you thanks that through the waters of the Red Sea, you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the promised land. Blessed be God for ever. We give you thanks for sending your Son Jesus. For us he was baptized by John in the river Jordan. For us he was anointed as Christ by your Holy Spirit. For us he suffered the baptism of his own death and resurrection, setting us free from the 6

7 bondage of sin and death, and opening to us the joy and freedom of everlasting life. Blessed be God for ever. We give you thanks for your Holy Spirit who teaches us and leads us into all truth, filling us with his gifts so that we might proclaim the gospel to all nations and serve you as a royal priesthood. Blessed be God for ever. We give you thanks for you have called Jeremiah, Simon, Jett, and Maliah to new life through the waters of baptism. Now sanctify this water, that your servants who are washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Anoint them with your Holy Spirit and bring them to new birth in the family of your Church, that they may become inheritors of your glorious kingdom. We give you praise and honour and worship through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Blessed are you, our strength and song, and our salvation. Let us join those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. The Baptismal Covenant Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 7

8 Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God's help. Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God's help. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? I will, with God's help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? I will, with God's help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God's help. Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God's creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth? I will, with God s help. The Baptism I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The anoints the forehead of each candidate, saying, I sign you with the cross, and mark you as Christ's own for ever. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. 8

9 The Giving of the Light Receive the light of Christ, to show that you have passed from darkness to light. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Please turn to the people around you and exchange a sign of God s peace. THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST Offertory Hymn 433 Lord You Give the Great Commission Abbot s Leigh Prayer over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer CW 1B The Peace is exchanged with a handshake or similar greeting with those immediately around us as a symbol of our reconciliation with our neighbour before approaching the altar. It is not necessary to move from one s place. At the Offertory, gifts of bread and wine, signs of the fruit of human labour, are brought to the altar to be transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, signs of God s love for the world. The offering plate is passed for the money offering, a sign of our gratitude for God s blessing of our lives. Money may be offered as cash or cheque if placed in an envelope (visitors envelopes are in the pews), tax receipts are issued for donations of twenty dollars or more. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy......for ever praising you and singing: Having been fed with the spiritual food of our Lord, we now prepare to be sent into the world to share the light and life of God. 9

10 Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness...great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so Father, calling to mind his death on the cross...father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. 10

12 Jesus is the Host who invites us to share his Table. those who are baptised in any tradition are welcome to receive Communion in both bread and wine. Please come forward to receive Communion as invited by the Sidespeople. If you wish to receive a blessing instead, please cross your arms in front of your chest. Communion may be received at either the High Altar or in the Chapel. The Chapel is accessible for those who find stairs difficult. If you require gluten-free bread, please ask the Communion minister. Please do not dip the bread into the wine. After making your Communion, please return to your seat to pray in silence. Breaking of the Bread I am the bread of life, says the Lord. Gracious God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Children s Ministry St John s welcomes children and youth. They are welcome to remain with you to worship and do not have to remain perfectly still and quiet! Please feel free to allow them to roam if they wish. For children who are not yet of school age, there is a professional child care provider staffing our Nursery, which is at the end of the hallway past the washrooms. For school age children, we offer a weekly Sunday School from September to June where kids hear the same Bible readings as in the worship service and engage in activities that are designed to teach the faith. On Posture in Worship It is customary that we stand to pray and sing and sit to hear God s Word proclaimed and interpreted. Some people prefer to kneel to pray.
