Profile of a Candidate for the Priesthood in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles The following characteristics are descriptive of men admitted to candidacy for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In the selection of students for the seminary, while respecting the individual s age, maturity, and level of students, it must be apparent that the seminarian has the potential to meet these expectations prior to ordination. These characteristics are consistent with the issues of human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral formation set forth by Pope John Paul II in his 1992 Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Pastores Dabo Vobis, articles 43-59, and as described in The Program for Priestly Formation. 1. An ecclesial spirituality that includes a deep love and commitment to the Eucharist, to the Sacrament life of the Church, to the Scriptures, and to the Liturgy of the Hours; as well as a personal spirituality that includes a commitment to private prayer, balancing devotions with personal spiritual growth. 2. A fundamental knowledge and understanding of the teaching of the Catholic Church, and a faith commitment to those teaching in their entirely. 3. Commitment to the Magisterium of the Church as contained in official Church documents, with special emphasis upon the spirit and teaching of the Second Vatican Council ad subsequent implementing documents; commitment to following the leadership of the Archbishop as the authentic teacher within Archdiocese. The candidate must understand and accept the extraordinary teaching of our Holy Father in Pastores Dabo Vobis. 4. Strong moral character and an evident commitment to integrity, honesty, and personal and social justice.

5. A genuine desire to serve others over the pursuit and satisfaction of one s personal interest, with a strong commitment to an appropriately simple lifestyle and willingness to serve the poor and to accept assignment to less affluent parishes. 6. Physical, mental and emotional health, as evidenced by the absence of inhibiting disabilities and potentially serious medical conditions, and balanced approach to work, prayer and leisure; appropriate expression of emotions; good stress management skills and freedom from addictions; where pertinent, five years of sobriety and continuing successful involvement in recovery program. 7. Age appropriate psycho-sexual maturity. 8. Commitment to and ability to live a life of celibacy according to the call of Christ, including celibate living for two years prior to entering the seminary and throughout the entire period of formation. Pursuing the virtue of chastity enhances overall priestly holiness. 9. Proven academic ability to graduate in theological studies, to integrate sound theology with solid pastoral practice, and to engage in life-long learning, including a willingness to engage in ongoing professional growth and opportunities for continuing education. 10. Willingness to cooperate with the vision and mission of the Universal Church, the Archdiocese, the Archbishop, and appropriate Archdiocese officials and leaders. 11. Good interpersonal skills for sustaining relationship and fulfilling and duties and responsibilities of ministry, including evidence of sound peer relationships.

12. Pastoral sensitivity demonstrated by genuine care and compassion for others, a clear sense of prudence, as well as an aptitude for acquiring pastoral skills. 13. Ability to work collaboratively with laymen, laywomen, women religious, permanent deacons, other priests, and the Regional Bishops. 14. Demonstrable leadership skills and ability to show initiative in pastoral and personal situations, together with the desire to learn sound liturgical presiding skills and to serve as a leader of prayer. 15. Ability to minister in two or more pastoral languages, with Spanish the most often needed. 16. Appropriate appreciation and respect for diversity and multiculturalism, especially as these factors present themselves in the religious traditions of the various ethnic groups. 17. Requisite communication skills.

COMMON FEARS ABOUT A CHURCH VOCATION By Rev. Dan Guenthe Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa It seems lately I ve been visiting with a number of people about priesthood or religious life, and I ve been encountering a common dilemma. I m hearing people expressing interest, but because of many fears that they have, they don t come forth. Their fears are very real. Some are based on legitimate concerns, and some, quite frankly, are not. I would like to name and respond to some of the common fears that I m hearing. Before naming them, however, two things need to be said. First, I believe all people are fearful as they enter into the early stages of vocation discernment. This is natural, and is a very typical response. I m more concerned about those who claim to have no fears about this. I think denial is happening in this case. The second point to note is that these fears will continue to plague them and even manipulate them unless they address them head on. It may take an assertive boost, but the fears can subside whether one is ordained / professed or not. Fear of Disappointing Family and Others A fear often expressed is that appointing parents, family and friends should they not become ordained or professed. In responding, I think one has to really listen to the Spirit within, and try to do what they really believe they should be doing. If they try formation and discern it s really not for them, that s okay. Open and honest dialogue needs to take place with family and friends about this. Like the one discerning, family and friends have been in a questioning state of mind. Like the one discerning, they, too, may gain peace of mind if the vocation was at least tested. This is important point. Rather then being disappointed if the loved one doesn t continue, family and friends may be put at ease knowing that a serious question has been explored and answered. Never exploring the vocation question would probably be more disappointing.

Fear of Uncertainty Another fear voiced is that they re not 100% sure of decision, and so can t act on it. In responding, please understand that one doesn t have to be 100% sure in order to further investigate it. If this has been gut question over a period of time, I think it s worth exploring. If others have been affirming one s thoughts with their thoughts, all the more reason to step forth. By entering a seminary formation program, one is committing to that particular time of exploration and not yet to the end result of priesthood or religious life. As one moves through and nears the end of seminary formation, we are then more concerned about degree of certainty to the vocations. Fear of Loneliness One of the most common fears involves the celibacy issue focused on concerns of loneliness and family matters. In responding, one has to realize that loneliness touches everyone and every lifestyle. To say that celibate people would suffer more from it is not necessarily true. There are many lonely couples and many lonely families. Loneliness results more from internal circumstances than from the external. If people are insecure, they ll be lonely regardless of how many people may be around them. In terms of having and being part of a family, as a priest I ve often found myself being a parent or sibling to someone more than their own actual parents or siblings. Priests and religious, if they allow themselves to be, are often invited into intimate family situations and gathering within their parish or area of ministry. Many times, this can provide a sense of belonging that people look for and long for in having their own family. Finally, many priests and religious belong to support groups that gather regularly for prayer, discussion, and encouragement.

Fear of Insufficient Personal Financial Resources In formation for priesthood and religious life, considerable funds and resources are necessary. Different times I hear interested candidates saying they don t want to cause the diocese of religious community the expenses involved unless they re 100% sure the choice. This should not be a concern. There are many generous people ready to share the financial blessings God has given to them. At the discretion of the Bishop and vocation office, this money is made available to assist those discerning. Even if one should not complete their studies, chances are they ll still be involved in some form of ministry. The financial help is therefore, never wasted. Fear of Being Tied Down Sometimes I hear people voicing fears that if ordained or professed, they would be too tied down in life. They feel they would not have the chance to travel, gain further education, change work, etc. In responding, I think this is far from the truth! Lay people, especially parents of young children, are just as tied down if not even more so. For continuing education, priests and religious have excellent opportunities. Every summer, many priests and religious are involved in summer school. Study throughout the school year at home or overseas in very possible too. Also, changing the type of ministry and location of work is very common for priests and sisters. Of course, priests and religious are allowed vacation time each year and regular days off each week. When someone is looking at the studies involved for vocation, they often become fearful about whether or not can handle the work. My response is that it may not be as difficult as it may appear. If one is of average intelligence or better, and is willing to work, they can master the studies. Keep in mind, too, that unlike a secular graduate program, a seminary or religious formation program looks not only at academic ability, but also one s gifts in spirituality, relational skills, emotional and psychological development as well. The academic side is only one of many facets reviewed in formation.

Fear of Living without Possessions Can I live without some of the wealth and material possessions I could have from a secular job? Selfish sounding or not, this is fear often stated. Let me respond by saying that there are really no truly poor priests or sisters, at least not in this country. We sometimes may not own much, but our basic needs are always provided for. Parishioners are often very generous to us throughout the year, too. We need to keep in mind that wealth can be measured in more ways than just by a bank account of accumulated material possessions. I personally don t have the money and possessions my peers have. But I consider myself to be wealthy in my ministerial experiences, friendships and the occasions for growth I ve had as a priest. Maybe this isn t seen like external wealth, but the inner wealth is overflowing! Fear of Unhappiness Will I be happy? This is a key question and fear with many contemplating a Church vocation. To respond, I think one has to look at how they ve achieved happiness in the past since this will be a good indicator of future happiness. If it takes a lot of external rewards to make one happy, they may not be that happy in a Church vocation. If helping others, especially in growing in the Lord and in the faith is rewarding to someone, they ll be happy in a Church vocation. If one needs to have their needs fulfilled first before others, they probably won t be happy in a Church vocation. If one can live with mystery, is open to change, is sensitive to the needs of theirs, loves the Lord and cares for the church, and is willing to sacrifice, they certainly could be very happy in the church vocation. If one is willing to place their trust in the Lord over and above placing it in the ways of the world, chances are they ll be very happy in the Church vocation. Fear for the Future of Ordained and Religious Life and Future of the Church A very practical fear involves the future of ordained and religious life. With the declining number of priests and sisters, will those still active in the future years be worked to death? In responding, I have to say YES, if you allow this to happen, and if you say NO to increasing lay involvement and ownership. Priests and religious don t have to do it all! Some of this letting go is difficult. However, with more lay people being professionally trained for ministry, and more moving into

this, it s becoming easier to share ministry with them. Sacrifices will have to be made with the number of liturgies offered, but some creative and collaborative ministry programs can allow healthy and exciting lives of ministry for future priests and sisters. Along this same idea, sometimes potential candidates fear whether or not they can adapt to the very changing church of the future. In responding, I think one has to look at their own flexibility. Are they secure only with the known, or can they live with mystery? It may even cause one to look at issues within themselves, issues of security and trust in God. People who are fairly insecure often don t deal with change very well. There is no doubt that the Church will continue to grow and change in coming years and the vocations tomorrow will have to live with this. With trust and faith in the Lord, flowing with changing future will be very possible. Do I have what it takes? Do I have the gift and qualities needed for Church ministry? To respond, I would ask the person to think over what they like seeing in the person who ministers to them. Clues and comments from people around us can be helpful here, too. Also, many vocation offices have vocation aptitude tests and programs potential vocations can take that will indicate whether they have the skills necessary for a Church vocation. Finally, people have fears about all that they would be giving up in following a Church vocation. I respond by asking them not to focus only on the negative, that which they re giving up, but on the positive as well- that which they ll gain in the Church vocation. All major choices in life involve both giving up and taking on. I personally believe that there are many wonderful gifts and opportunities to be gained in taking on a church vocation!

IDENTIFYING CANDIDATES FOR THE PRIESTLY / RELIGIOUS LIFE 1) SEARCH COMMITTEE Within the various individual or combined parish organizations, begin to identify potential candidates for the priesthood / religious life. 2) IDENTIFY LEADERS - Each parish organization, especially the youth and young adult ones, might identify good candidates and raise them to leadership positions. 3) TAP SHOULDERS - Having identified potential candidates, strategize as to who is best to approach him / her, and do so. Describe what you see within the person, and invite them to some activity, such as a Night of Discernment offered in the diocese (for young adults) the Archdiocesan Discernment Group, an Andrew Dinner offered by the pastor, or a visit / conversation with the archdiocesan vocation director. 4) TWO BY TWO Whatever it is that is offered, do not let the potential candidate do it alone. Go along with them. For example, do not give them the vocation director s name and phone number. Offer to go to the office with him / her. Or go with the candidate to a parish night of prayer on vacations. 5) PARISH NIGHT OF PRAYER AND DISCUSSION BY ALL THE MINISTERS Establish one night wherein the ministers in the parish, all of them, gather to pray and discuss and possibly identify potential candidates for the priestly life.

Prayer to Follow the Call of Christ Lord, I thank You for the gifts You have given me, especially for life, love, family and friends. Help me to know myself better and to know my talents, as I pray, study and decide on my life's work. Help me to see and understand the path You open for me. Help me choose a life's work that will be in response to my potential and your love for me. If I am being invited to follow You as a priest, brother, sister, give me a generous heart to respond to your challenging call and the strength to follow You wherever You lead me. Amen. Vocation Prayer for Discernment God, I know You love me and have great plans for me. But sometimes I am overwhelmed by the thought of my future. Show me how to walk forward one day at a time. May I take heart while I search openly, learn about all the choices, listen to others for advice, and pay attention to my own feelings. By doing these things, may I hear your call to a lifestyle and a career that will let me love as only I can, and let me serve others with the special gifts that You have given me. Amen. To Know One's Vocation Lord, my God and my loving Father, You have made me to know You, to love You, to serve You, and thereby to find and to fulfill myself. I know that You are in all things, and that every path can lead me to You. But, among of them all, there is one especially by which You want me to come to You. Since I will do what You want of me, I pray You, send your Holy Spirit to me: into my mind, to show me what You want of me; into my heart, to give me the determination to do it, and to do it with all my love, with all my mind, and with all my strength right to the end. Amen.

Bringing the Father's Love to the World Lord Jesus, Please grant to me the grace to know my true vocation. In Baptism I was signed in your name and have grown to share in the work of bringing the Father's love to our world. May I respond to the special life's work to which You are calling me. I ask that many will hear the particular call to serve in the Church as priests, religious and consecrated lay people. To whatever You ask of me, may I freely, courageously and lovingly respond. Amen. Responding to Baptismal Graces Creator God, Life is your gift to me. Through Baptism, You invite me to share the gift of my life in service to others. Be with me as I choose each day to show your presence in our world. Give me the courage and generosity to respond to your love, to your call. I pray especially for priests, brothers, sisters and all those who endeavor to serve You in witnessing to the Gospel. Keep them close to You. Open the minds and hearts of many other men and women that they may accept your challenge to build the Kingdom. Amen. Send Your Holy Spirit Heavenly Father, You have created each of us to love You and your people. You have chosen some to serve by responding to the particular call to the priesthood and religious life. Send your Holy Spirit to stir the hearts of those You have designed to follow this path of spiritual leadership.

We pray this petition, faithful and most gracious God, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Strengthen Me Loving God, in Baptism You ask me to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with You. Help me to know how to bring justice and love to a world that is desperately in need of You and your values. Strengthen me, as well as my brothers and sisters, with the courage and generosity to respond to your invitation. I ask this in the name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Family Vocation Prayer Loving God, each member of our family is a special gift from You. You have given each of us gifts and talents so that we may enjoy life but also so we can share with others. Generous and loving people are needed for service and leadership in our Church. Help us to know how to encourage and support each other so that we can respond generously to this need. We know that You will be with us, invite us to become the kind of people You desire us to be. Help us to trust in You and in each other. Amen. Parents Prayer for Vocations Gracious and loving God you have blessed us with the privilege of becoming parents. We ask that you provide us with all that we need in accepting this awesome responsibility. We pray that we will be open to your spirit who is our source of strength as we witness to our children your love for each of them and your desire for them to be happy and to live a full life.

We ask your help so we may guide and encourage our children to believe that they each have a special calling and to use their gifts and talents for others. We pray, Heavenly Father, that our children will discover and respond enthusiastically to your desire for them whether it be to the vocation of single, married, ordained or consecrated life. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Pope John Paul II's Prayer for Vocations Holy and provident Father, You are the Lord of the vineyard and the harvest and You give each a just reward for their work. In your design of love You call men and women to work with You for the salvation of the world. We thank You for Jesus Christ, your living word, who has redeemed us from our sins and is among us to assist us in our poverty. Guide the flock to which You have promised possession of the kingdom. Send new workers into your harvest and set in the hearts of pastor s faithfulness to your plan of salvation, perseverance in their vocation and holiness of life. Christ Jesus, who on the shores of the Sea of Galilee called the Apostles and made them the foundation of the Church and bearers of your Gospel, in our day, sustain your people on its journey. Give courage to those whom You call to follow You in the priesthood and the consecrated life, so that they may enrich God's field with wisdom of your Word. Make them docile instruments of your love in everyday service of their brothers and sisters. Spirit of holiness, who pour out your gifts on all believers and, especially, on those called to be Christ's ministers, help young people to discover the beauty of the divine call. Teach them the true way of prayer, which is nourished by the Word of God. Help them to read the signs of the times, so as to be faithful interpreters of your Gospel and bearers of salvation. Mary, Virgin of the Word of God made flesh in your womb, help us to be open to the Word of the Lord, so that, having been welcomed and meditated upon, it may grow in our hearts. Help us to live like You the beatitudes of believers and to dedicate ourselves with unceasing charity to evangelizing all those who seek your Son. Grant that we may serve every person, becoming servants of the Word we have heard, so that remaining faithful to it we may find our happiness in living it. Amen.
