1 DLSFKJLASKDJF ABIDING SAVIOR Lutheran Church and School OCTOBER 2017 Day by Day Reformation Celebrates 500 th Anniversary At the end of the month, we will remember the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. On that day, Martin Luther stood up for the Gospel when he posted his 95 theses. All Protestant churches grew out of that event, and even the Roman Catholic church changed in response to those events. Reformation Day is not a commemoration of Luther, but a thanksgiving for the renewed proclamation that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ alone. That is worth celebrating. As we celebrate the Reformation this year, perhaps it would be good for us to ask the same question about this blessed event itself. What does the reformation mean for us? There are many answers that could be offered, but perhaps here are some we might think about: The reformation means we will never take the Grace of God for granted. With the Gospel at the center of the church s life we are in the business of forgiveness. Our gracious Lord died on the cross so that each believer in Jesus might rest assured that God has forgiven them all their sins and they are free to serve God without the constant cloud of guilt or shame hanging over us. The reformation means that we will be sure to extend to our neighbors the same Grace and Forgiveness we ourselves have received from God. We are loving and grateful people as individuals and as a community of faith. Our neighbors at home and church are thankful for our loving presence in their lives. The reformation means our faith in Jesus who was raised from the dead gives us hope in every situation and encounter of life. We know no lost causes or people; we rush in to help where others might run away and do so with hearts filled with thanksgiving for the opportunity. The Reformation means we will daily and sincerely ask ourselves What does this mean? as we go about our work, our play, our worship and our service in hopes that we miss no opportunity to share the love of God in Christ Jesus to everyone everywhere. The Reformation means that at the end of each day we humbly reflect on the successes and failures of the day and as we answer the question what does this mean? We once again repent of our sins and drink in the forgiveness, love and hope that is ours in the Gospel that the Reformation restored to its rightful place in the church. Your Servant in Christ, Pastor Tom The Reformation In celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, Concordia Publishing house is making available a 250 page Hardback book. The sixteenth century was a cultural and historical earthquake, the after-shocks of which continue to be felt even now, 500 years later. The Reformation provides a richly illustrated and engagingly written overview of this amazing time of change and renewal in the Christian Church. In this beautifully designed coffee table-style book, you will learn about famous leaders and lesser-known players who took part in the complex chain of events that shook church and state to their very foundations. Pre-ordered books are available for $24.49 plus tax and shipping. Total cost will be around $30. We re taking preorders in the church office. Please contact Laura or Jennifer to reserve your copy. We have an abbreviated sample in the office if you would like to get an idea of what the book will look like. Communicating Christ s Love and Our Love for Him

For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o clock, he did the same. And about five o clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, Why are you standing here idle all day? They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You also go into the vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first. When those hired about five o clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last. abidingsaviorlakeforest October Page 2 - Day by Day

5 materials, films, and activity books for children. Nearly 2,500 people participated in the program and shared their personal information with staff for follow up. Mount Sinabung is one of the most active volcanoes on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. After 400 years of dormancy, the volcano erupted in August 2010 and has shown periods of increased activity since This once-bustling farming village that is ideally located on fertile slopes has now turned into an eerie ghost town. Tens of thousands of people abandoned their homes and belongings in these villages after authorities ordered mandatory evacuations to prevent further deaths. Following the most recent eruption this past spring, Lutheran Hour Ministries - Indonesia staff conducted a holistic program for victims in Berastagi, North Sumatera. These people have been living in tents in refugee camps for the past seven years and most can t go back to their homes to retrieve their belongings. Now, they can only rely on the kindness of the government, which sometimes is not able to give the appropriate attention that these refugees need. In partnership with a local team of doctors and medical workers who have hearts to serve people who are suffering, LHM reached out to children, adults, and the elderly in three different camps over three days. Eight doctors and three medical workers conducted medical exams and provided treatment while LHM staff members offered clean water, good health tips, and spiritual strengthening through a variety of resources such as Bible Correspondence Course Outreach programs like this have proven to be an effective way of demonstrating and telling people of the love of Christ, says Gunya Na Thalang, LHM s regional director for Asia. Most of these people are tired, frustrated, and generally disappointed with life. By offering a message of hope we can have a comprehensive impact in reaching both body and soul. Surely the same would be true in helping those suffering from the devastating effects of hurricanes Irma and Harvey. Change Their World Change Yours This Changes Everything We Need You!
