2 A Forgiven Woman First Day Overview Thy sins are forgiven! Pause and think about what this means to you today. Our lesson this week centers on a woman who heard Jesus speak these words directly to her.the first thing we learn about her is recorded in Luke 7:37a. Write the one word that describes her. In our daily routine we often lose the wonder of what it means to be forgiven. Let the lesson this week renew your deep appreciation for your salvation. With this in mind, write a prayer here expressing your deepest desire and need in relationship to your study. Then Jesus said to her, Your sins are forgiven. Luke 7:48 (NIV)

3 Second Day Read Luke 7:36,37 Follow Jesus through Luke 7:36. Where did He go and why? Identify this Pharisee from Luke 7:40 Challenge: Who were the Pharisees? Jesus always had an eternal purpose in all He did. We don t know what prompted Simon s desire for Jesus to come to his house. Pastor Chuck says: Whether he was a serious seeker or not, we are not told. It is possible that it was just a set-up, he was just looking for something to find fault with about Jesus. Whatever Simon s reason, Jesus accepted his invitation. Through Luke 7:37 we begin to discover Jesus purpose. Behold this by writing what occurred phrase by phrase. Challenge: Research an alabaster box of ointment. Record your findings.

4 Third Day Read Luke 7:37,38 Picture this woman who was a sinner walking into a Pharisee s house. What did she do?(luke 7:38) Note: In Jesus day it was customary to recline on couches or pillows while eating. This woman is never mentioned by name. Traditionally some have identified her as Mary Magdalene, but there is no scriptural evidence to support this. She brought an alabaster box of ointment which she poured on Jesus feet. Focus once more on verse 38. Pause and think about each phrase and how it expresses the depth of her devotion. How does her love and gratitude inspire you? Complete today s study by writing a note expressing your love and devotion to Jesus. Humbly I come to You, for I know You satisfy. I am empty but I know Your love does not run dry. I m falling on my knees, offering all of me. Jesus, You re all this heart is living for. Selected music

5 Fourth Day Read Luke 7:39 43 Sense Simon the Pharisee s shock when this woman came into his house and anointed Jesus feet. What was he thinking? (Luke 7:39) Observe Jesus response to Simon by reading Luke 7:40. How did Jesus answer him? A careful observation of Luke 7:40 reveals that Jesus knew Simon s thoughts. What do you learn from Psalm 139:2b about our thoughts? What is your reaction to this? How is Simon s response to Jesus in verse 40b an example for us? Jesus answered Simon with a parable. Read Luke 7:41-43 and write the answer to Jesus question to Simon. One person in this parable owed about $50,000 and the other $5,000. Neither could pay his debt. How does this relate to the woman and Simon? I owed a debt I could not pay. He paid a debt He did not owe. I needed Someone to wash my sins away. And now I sing a brand new song, Amazing Grace, Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay. Selected music

6 Fifth Day Read Luke 7:44-50 Jesus continues His exhortation to Simon by contrasting Simon s neglect with the woman s acts of love. List these contrasts from Luke 7:44-46: Simon The Woman Notice Jesus tender defense of this woman in Luke 7:47. What do you learn about love and forgiveness from this verse? Note: Pastor Chuck says: It is possible to love much even if you have not beenforgiven much. That is, you do not have to be some rank sinner to love the Lord much. All you have to do is to know Him much, and the more you know Him the more you will love Him. Listen to Jesus words spoken directly to this woman by reading Luke 7:48. Put yourself in her place. Think about what it must have been like to hear Jesus say this. Share your reaction. Jesus statement aroused questions in the minds of the other guests. What did they that sat at the meal with Him say within themselves? (Luke 7:49)

7 How does Matthew 9:(3-5)6a answer this question? How grateful this forgiven woman must have felt when Jesus spoke to her. What did He say? (Luke 7:50) Why is it important to recognize that it was her faith that saved her, not the weeping or washing of His feet, or any other acts of love? Her loving acts did demonstrate her faith. How do you demonstrate your faith? (See James 2:17-20) Consider the turmoil, distress and guilt this woman must have experienced before her encounter with Jesus. What do you think her reaction might have been to Jesus words go in peace? Peace, peace, sweet peace, wonderful peace from above. Oh, the wonderful, wonderful peace, sweet peace, the gift of God s love. Selected music

8 Sixth Day Review Luke 7:36-50 Think about the contrasts between Simon and this woman in Luke 7: Note one difference that stands out to you. Simon s sin was less obvious than the woman s, yet both owed a debt they could not pay. What lesson is there in this for us? In response to Jesus forgiving the many sins of this woman, she loved much. Think about how much the Lord has forgiven you. How does this affect your love for Him? In Luke 7:38, this woman expressed her love for Jesus by her actions. Share ways you express your love for Jesus. What does Jesus command go in peace mean to you? In what specific way has your study of Luke 7:36-50 spoken to you? I m forgiven because You were forsaken. I m accepted, You were condemned. Amazing love, how can it be that You my King would die for me? Amazing love, I know it s true, and it s my joy to honor You.
