2 Greetings to you all in the Lord! Let me introduce you to an old movie, that some of you may recognize. It is called, Babette s Feast. A small remote and beautiful village in Jutland, Denmark in 19 th century sits in its background. There lived a pastor who followed strict rules of faith. He is now long gone and his two aging daughters, Philippa and Martine, oversee the residents of faith. They were once beautiful young girls. Loren, a young officer of the Swedish cavalry falls in love with Martine but later walks away, stricken by guilt, he feels unworthy, for he used to be a dissolute gambler. An opera singer is captivated by Philippa but he gets carried away during a rehearsal and Philippa turns down his offer of high society. Many years go by and two sisters reached their fifties. Babette visits them with a letter from the opera singer. He says that she is a refuge from an anti-revolutionary movement in Paris and recommends her as a housekeeper. Babette lightens and brightens the life of two sisters as a cook. Babette s friend in Paris buys lottery tickets every year and one day, she wins the lottery, with which she could return to Paris comfortably. It is around the time that the small congregation celebrates the one hundredth birthday of the founding pastor. Babette, filled with appreciation and self-sacrifice decides to prepare a feast for the two sisters and the congregation. The sisters are hesitant but accept Babette s offer to celebrate the occasion with a genuine French dinner. Babette goes to Paris and orders supplies. The villagers are amazed by the overflowing and out of the ordinary ingredients, as they arrive. The sisters are used to a simple and frugal life style. They begin to feel uneasy but let Babette continue with her plan. The last part of the movie shows the preparation and the serving of a magnificent banquet of a palace. A very humble country home is filled with colorful and delicious dishes. Guests do not recognize the names of the highly sophisticated cuisine. One of the guests is Loren, now a general. He is the only one among the guests who has a connection to high society and that type of life style. He comments on the high quality of the food and drinks which are almost the same kinds he enjoyed at the renowned Café Anglais in Paris. The meal is so divinely supreme that Loren even quotes a Bible verse from Psalm 85:10. Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed one another. During the full course of the meal, guests begin to open up and are filled with sense of kindness and love for each other. (I would do the same with the kind of foods and choice beverages) The feast turns out to be like a redemptive Eucharist. Only after the meal, does Babette disclose that she once was a Chef at that famous Café Anglais. The sisters think that, the feast being over, Babette will return to Paris. She tells them that she spent all the money and is not going anywhere. Realizing what Babette has done, Martine says that she will be poor for the rest of her life, to which Babette replies, An artist is never poor. Philippa tells her that in paradise Babette will indeed be the great artist God intended her to be. UMCoY is getting ready to have a feast of movies and can invite people to come. At the center of our feast is the sharing the love of Christ, as Babette in her nature as a chef served the people she loved without withholding anything. Actually, Babette s feast somewhat resembles the Lord s Supper. Jesus prepared the Last Supper by giving up everything he had. Jesus poured out His love on the cross so that we may eat from the feast and have life in abundance. I feel like that the feast has begun at our church. After long months of complications from finding a reliable manufacturer of projector screens, its specifications, placing an order, shipping, customs, and many others things, the screen has arrived. If you have not seen the huge screen, go check it out in the fellowship hall. To save cost on the delivery, Mike Hinckley and I went to a port warehouse with a U-haul truck and brought it back to the church. Without God s intervention sending help at the right time and place, bringing the 30 foot long, and 550lb cargo, would not have been possible. As Babette served her people with joy, I find joy in serving the Lord through this theater project. We are approaching the time of year to ponder on what our Lord Jesus has done for us and also what the Lord requires of us. I pray that you, through serving the Lord, and His people, taste the same joy of mine. Phillips

Cereal Sunday The second Sunday of the month is Cereal Sunday. This helps support the Interfaith Community Support Center. The Oct. 8 th meeting of the United Methodist Men will feature Robert Forte, Investigator for the California Lottery as the speaker. They meet at 7:30 am at the Oak House Restaurant in Yucaipa, for prayer, mediation, program, fellowship and good food. All are welcome. Pack a Suitcase Project I m sure you all remember the wonderful children who inspired us with their songs, dances, and bright smiles at the end of July. There is one more way that we can bless them before they return to Uganda. The African Children s Choir has asked for sponsors to provide a suitcase for each choir member with items they will need upon their return to boarding school in Uganda. The contents of the suitcase will be the only items the child will have upon his/her return home. They needed 18 sponsors to provide the suitcase full of items, as there are 18 children. When they were with us in July, they only had 9 sponsors. So we adopted Daniel, and will be filling his suitcase and shipping it to Texas, where they will be when they depart for Uganda in January. How can you help? I already have 7 volunteers to shop for items on the list. You can either be a shopper, or monetary donations are also most welcome. If you want to shop, contact me at jrdyerly@verizon.net, or leave a message for me in the church office and I will add you to the shopper list. I will ask that when you are assigned an item or items to purchase, that will be your contribution and you will pay for your purchase. They ask for a$100 check to purchase other essentials in Uganda, so the monetary donations will go toward that, and to help offset the cost of the suitcase itself. Checks should be made out to UMCOY with a note that it is for the suitcase project. I will be collecting in the Fellowship Hall later in September and October, or you can put it in an envelope that is clearly designated for this project and put it in the offering plate. If anyone has a picture of the choir when they were at our church, I would love a copy, as they encourage us to enclose a picture and a letter to Daniel. This is a surprise for the children, and will come around Christmas time, so it is wonderful to have this opportunity to share Christ s love with this child. Thanks for your love and support of this project. Johanne Dyerly
4 Upcoming Events Stewardship Sunday October 16 You will have received your letter along with a pledge card to return back to the church. Please consider this prayerfully. 2 nd Corinthians 9:6-8 "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed." Put this date on your calendar November 14, 2016, 6:30 pm Annual Charge Conference - First UMC Redlands Please get your reports into the office by November 7. Pastor Phillips Christmas Concert will be a fundraiser effort for the air-conditioning system in the fellowship hall. The concert will be held Sunday, December 11, at 2:30 pm. DID YOU KNOW that the pull tabs on aluminum cans contain more aluminum than the can? The Ronald McDonald House has been collecting tabs for several years. This is one of Ron s and my favorite projects. Would you be willing to help? We will place a jar in the Fellowship Hall, and you can drop in your tabs. When we have a jar full, we will take them to the Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda. If you have questions, please let me know. Thank you, Joan Faux

7 Merry Methodists Thirteen Merry Methodists had a lovely adventure in Los Angeles on our September Trip. We toured the Social Justice Museum at the La Flora United Methodist Church at the top of Olvera Street. We had lunch at various places on Olvera Street or ventured across the street to Union Station. After some free time, we loaded up the van and drove the few blocks to the Walt Disney Music Hall. Joanne, our Tour Guide, showed us the amazing center both inside and out. The history, architecture, and design all come together in an amazing artistic place of beauty. Our last stop was around the corner to the new contemporary Catholic Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels. Their organist was rehearsing and added to the flavor of the inspirational place of worship. The mausoleum downstairs was a reverent and lovely resting place. This month s trip will be held Thursday, October 27. Our destination is the Huell Howser Museum at Chapman University in Orange then we ll venture down to Historic Downtown San Juan Capistrano for lunch followed by a tour of the Mission. The cost is $30 and signups will be in the Fellowship Hall after worship or call the church office. We ll leave the church at 8:45 AM and return between 5:00-6:00 PM. We re limited to 14 people. Sign up early. Here s to another great adventure! Amy Bahnson amy@yucaipamethodist.org (760)
