Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer Spontaneous prayers or A faith-based song Reflection Question for May 25 th How significant is the Blessed Sacrament in my life? 2 Dear Parishioners, What most often receives the world s acclaim? Obviously, the achievements of the powerful, the gifted and the beautiful hear the world s applause. It is easy to forget how much the world depends on the unsung and unseen people among us. St. John in his Gospel (John 6:1-15) reminds us of this in a memorable way. Jesus became such a popular teacher and healer that great crowds followed him, even when he went out into the wilderness. On one such occasion, a huge group that had followed him into the desert became extremely hungry. Jesus disciples were concerned about the crowds since they had neither food nor money to buy food for such a large assembly. The only food they could find was the small lunch of barley loaves and dried fish that a boy had brought along. It was obviously too little for such a crowd. In Jesus hands, however, the little lunch was more than enough. A multitude of people were fed and blessed. It is easy for us to remain in the back of the crowd when we feel that what we have to offer is not enough. Who wants to give an offering that is too little? Everything about Jesus contradicted such a feeling. The principle of stewardship applies just as much to the one-talented person as to the multi-talented superstar. Yet we cling to what we have, or hide if from sight, because we fear it will be ridiculed as inadequate. Just as Jesus needed the boy s simple lunch, God depends on the small and relatively unimportant gifts of average people. Whatever we have, when placed in the hands of Jesus, is never too little. Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK There is no modern pain medicine as effective as a mother s kiss. Among the many ministries here at Saint Louis there is one that is looking for additional helpers. Once a month Saint Louis parishioners feed 700 people at Our Daily Bread a wonderful place in Baltimore city where poor and homeless people literally sit down for a served meal. No questions are asked about their status. They are simply treated with dignity and respect in an environment of Christian love and compassion. You can help by preparing chicken pieces according to a simple recipe. Members of our parish prepare the meal in their homes as they would prepare chicken for their family and then drop them off at the home of Mary Agnes Lewis (6005 Ten Oaks Road across from our parish cemetery) on the 2 nd Monday of each month. Available volunteers then take the food to the facility located next to the Basilica in Baltimore and serve the meal on the 2 nd Tuesday of each month. For additional information about how you can help, call Mary Agnes Lewis at This is a wonderful way in which a family can work together in preparing a wholesome meal for some of Hungry for something more spiritual? Is church a little too routine? Sometimes wonder about the relevance of Jesus? Try a dynamic weekend away with the guy or the gals: satisfy the hunger, rise above the routine, answer the questions. 5 SCHOOL NEWS Cultural Arts are in the Air at St. Louis School! Recently the students in grades 1, 3, 5, & 7 and our primary and middle school choruses sang in our spring concert -- they were awesome! The artwork of all our students was displayed in the halls and on the walls of the gym. Our school was transformed into an art gallery and a concert hall! Spanish projects of the 7 th and 3 rd grade students were also on display and were fabulous! You can see the benefit of our students receiving Spanish language and culture education starting in kindergarten. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Douglass, Mrs. Ruppert, Mrs. Purvis, and Mrs. Kerwin for sharing their talent and creativity with our children. A few evenings later, our Beginner, Prep, and Concert Bands held their Spring Concert. Our band students never cease to amaze us with their talents! We are very proud of them and congratulate them on their achievements this year. Of course we would like to thank our wonderful band instructor, Ms. Jennifer Roy. She definitely brings out the best in her band students. The Concert Band did very well during its performance at the Hershey Park Band Festival recently. The band received a superior rating and first place in their division. We are very proud of the band -- the dedication and hard work of the students are evident in the high quality of their playing. Representation Band On April 24 th, several of our students had the honor of performing in the Representation Band, held at Notre Dame Prep. These students were selected from over 50 Catholic elementary schools. The students who represented St. Louis School were: Meghan Brown flute, Paul Garvey alto sax, Emma Williams horn, Laura Goudreau tuba, Henry Hines baritone, Michael Monaghan trumpet, and Eric Forte trumpet. St. Louis Students their Service Continues! The Student Council is sponsoring the WE CAN Collection. Every class has a coffee can where students are encouraged to drop in their spare change for the Tutweiler Clinic in rural Mississippi. The Tutweiler Clinic s mission is to help all in that area to receive medical, educational, and social help. This fundraiser will run until Friday, May 23 rd. 6 YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS I guess I have no life, at least as I am driving. This is why I try to look at just about every bumper sticker that I can. Then, I either wave if I agree or ignore if I don t. (Okay, sometimes I will give looks to the really disrespectful ones!) Something wonderful is about to happen! This one really caught my eye (and my faith) but I was not able to see who was driving. Something wonderful is about to happen? Kind of gets the whole excitement building, huh? And yet, as Christians, we can say that about any moment, any day, any time in the church s year! As we celebrated Pentecost, we remembered something wonderful that happened. The Spirit came in fire and wind and languages and a new, courageous church was born! The Spirit comes again and again today and wonderful things continue to happen! If we believe, no, I mean really believe that Jesus is alive and well in our lives, that the Spirit is really helping us in past, present and future, this bumper sticker and His presence must mean hope. If you are graduating from 8 th grade, high school, college or beyond, something wonderful is about to happen if you believe! If you are trudging through life, something wonderful is about to happen. If you living great joy or great fear or great pain, something wonderful is about to happen. Know that He does not leave us orphaned but will always be with us. I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU!
