Living Way Church Adult Sunday School Program Introduction to Systematic Theology Lesson Four I. The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption A. Last week, the lesson focused on the person and work of Jesus Christ, the mediator between God and man (1 Tim 2:5), through whom the way of salvation was opened for sinners and all the blessings of salvation and of eternal life were merited for all those whom Christ represented in the covenant of redemption the cross secured the full salvation of all for whom Christ died B. The doctrine of Christ is naturally followed by a discussion of the way in which the work of redemption secured by Jesus Christ is applied in the hearts and lives of sinners by the special operation of the Holy Spirit C. Scripture makes clear that God saves sinners; the Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work together in sovereign wisdom, power, and love to achieve the salvation of a chosen people 1. God the Father in choosing a people,...a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages (Rev 7:9; cf. Col 3:12; 1 Thess 1:4; 1 Pet 2:9) 2. God the Son in fulfilling the Father s will by redeeming a people for His own possession "Father...glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you...you have given him authority...to give eternal life to all whom you have given him (John 17:1,2) 3. God the Holy Spirit in executing the purpose of the Father and Son by empowering the Son to carry out His ministry on earth and applying the benefits of Christ s redemptive work to those chosen by the Father D. Systematic theology recognizes an order of salvation the order in which the Holy Spirit applies the work of redemption to the hearts and lives of the redeemed 1. The Gospel Call a. The external (or outward) call is the gracious act of God whereby He invites all sinners, through the human proclamation of the gospel, to accept the salvation that is offered in Jesus Christ an invitation that goes out to all people and can be rejected b. The internal (or effectual) call is the gracious act of God in which He, speaking through the human proclamation of the gospel, summons people to Himself in such a way that they respond in saving faith c. What differentiates the external call from the internal (or effectual) call is not the message proclaimed, but the creative power of God by which we are brought to spiritual life 2. Regeneration (sometimes called being born again ) a. Scripture teaches that regeneration precedes our response to God s inward call enabling us to respond to the gospel with saving faith Page 1 of 7
John 3:3,5 Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God...Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. b. Regeneration is that gracious act of God in which He imparts new spiritual life to us, radically changing the governing disposition of the soul; it is a secret work of God that is not directly perceived by man, but can be perceived only in its effects Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he 5 loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved Colossians 2:13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses...god made alive together with [Christ] c. Regeneration (being born again) enables a person to hear the call of God the call is now brought home effectively to the heart d. Being made alive by the Holy Spirit, we are now enabled to rightly respond to the gospel, seeing both our need and the beauty of Christ 3. Conversion (Acts 15:3 cf. Rom 16:5; 1 Cor 16;15; 1 Tim 3:6) a. Conversion is that act of God whereby He causes the regenerated, in their conscious life, to willingly respond to the gospel call and turn to Him to sincerely repent of their sins and place their trust solely in Jesus Christ for salvation b. The new life of the regenerate man results in the conscious actions of repentance and faith (1) Repentance includes a change of view in which the past life is recognized as a life of sin, bringing guilt, defilement, and helplessness; a heartfelt sorrow for sin committed against a holy and just God; a turning from and renouncing of sin; and a sincere commitment to walk in obedience to Christ (2) Repentance and faith are to be viewed as different aspects of the one act of coming to Jesus Christ for salvation c. It is important to recognize that repentance and faith are gifts of God (Acts 11:18; cf. 2 Tim 2:25; Eph 2:8); only through the illuminating and empowering of the Holy Spirit are we able to cooperate with God in this aspect our of salvation 4. Justification a. Justification is an instantaneous legal act of God in which He (1) counts of our sins as completely forgiven and Christ s righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in His sight on Page 2 of 7
the basis of the perfect righteousness of Christ b. Whereas regeneration is an act of God in us (God making us alive in Christ), justification is a judgment of God with respect to us, declaring us just by imputing the righteousness of Jesus Christ to us (counting His righteousness as our own) Galatians 2:16...we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified 5. Adoption a. Adoption is an act of God whereby He makes us members of His family John 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of 17 God, and if children, then heirs heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ b. adoption is the highest privilege that the gospel offers: higher even than justification justification is the primary and fundamental blessing of the gospel...because it meets our primary spiritual need everything else in our salvation...rests on it adoption included. But this is not to say that justification is the highest blessing of the gospel. Adoption is higher, because of the richer relationship with God that it involves Adoption is a family idea, conceived in terms of love, and viewing God as father. In adoption, God takes us into His family and fellowship, and establishes us as His children and heirs. Closeness, affection and generosity are at the heart of the relationship. To be right with God the Judge is a great thing, but to be loved and cared for by God the Father is a greater [thing] Sanctification a. Sanctification has to do with holiness our conformity to the infinite worth of God in heart and disposition; hallowing God s name in all our thoughts, affections, desires, and actions (Matt 6:9; 1 Pet 3:15) b. In the English language, the adjective "holy" does not have a verb or noun form "holify" or holification does not exist in English; but in the language of the New Testament, the adjective holy can be made into verbs and nouns, sometimes referring to the condition of being holy and sometimes referring to the process of becoming holy 1 J.I. Packer, Knowing God, page 207. Page 3 of 7
(1) When you read the words sanctify, sanctifying, sanctification in the Bible, you are reading about holiness (2) The words sanctification and holiness communicate the same reality c. The New Testament talks about Christians both being and becoming holy Hebrews 10:10,14...we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all...for by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified d. Paul's favorite name for Christians is "saints" (the holy ones) 1 Corinthians 1:2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints (1) God has done something to make Christians as holy (2) But we are also "being made holy" (Heb 10:14) 2 Cor 7:1...let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God" Heb 12:10 God disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness" e. Wherever the New Testament addresses sanctification, it is talking about holiness; and when it is talking about the holiness of believers, it is either talking about the process of holiness or the condition of being holy f. Sanctification is that gracious and continuous operation of the Holy Spirit by which He purifies the sinner from the moral defilement of sin, renews his whole nature in the image of God, and enables him to perform good works it is a progressive work of God and man that makes the Christian more and more free from sin and more like Christ in his actual life conformed to [His] image (Rom 8:29) g. All Christians should expect ongoing growth in sanctification during their lifetimes, as they both trust in God to sanctify them and actively strive to obey God s commands (Col 1:29; Phil 3:12-15; 2 Pet 1:3-8) 7. Perseverance of the Saints a. All those who are truly born again will be kept by God s power and will persevere as Christians until the end of their lives, and only those who persevere until the end have been truly born again b. This definition avoids the often misleading understanding of terms like once saved, always saved and eternal security, that can give false assurance to those who do not truly know the Lord c. Three types of questions can help provide genuine assurance: Page 4 of 7
8. Glorification (1) Do I have a present trust in Christ for salvation? Is Christ my treasure? (2) Is there evidence of a regenerating work of the Holy Spirit in my heart? (3) Do I see a long-term pattern of growth in my Christian life? a. Glorification is the final step in the application of redemption b. It will happen when Jesus Christ returns and raises from the dead the bodies of all believers for all time who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive at His coming, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like His own 1 Cor 15:20-26,50-55 Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those 21 who have [died] For as by a man [Adam] came death, by a man [Jesus Christ] has 22 come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ [all 23 who place their faith in Him] shall all be made alive......christ the firstfruits [that is, thus far, Christ alone has been raised in His glorified body], then at his coming those 24 who belong to Christ [will be raised]. Then comes the end [of human history in this present age], when [Christ] delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying 25 every rule and every authority and power [that has stood opposed to God]. For 26 [Christ] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to 50 be destroyed is death... I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the 51 kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold! I tell you a 52 mystery. We shall not all [die] but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead [in 53 Christ] will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." 55 "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" II. The Doctrine of the Church A. The doctrine of the application of redemption is logically followed by the doctrine of the church, which is the community of all true believers for all time those who are the recipients of God s great salvation throughout all of redemptive history B. The doctrine of the church is a primary focus of study in Living Way s new member class and has been repeatedly presented in various sermon series to the church: 1. The Community That Grace Creates (Jan/Jun 2016) 2. Power Love Worship (Jan/Apr 2014) 3. The New Humanity (Apr/Sep 2013) 4. Called and Sent (Jan/Feb 2013) 5. Spiritual Gifts (Sep/Oct 2010) 6. Why We Love The Church (Nov/Dec 2009) Page 5 of 7
III. The Doctrine of the Future A. The doctrine of the future is also referred to as the doctrine of last things B. Others use the term eschatology, from the Greek eschatos which means last C. This doctrine is normally divided into two major sub-categories: 1. Individual Eschatology, addressing: a. The Nature of Physical Death b. The Intermediate State 2. General Eschatology, addressing: a. The Second Coming of Christ b. The Nature of the Millennium c. The Resurrection d. The Final Judgment and Eternal Punishment e. The New Heavens and New Earth D. It is important to remember that this doctrine is not given to us by God in order that we can determine the precise order of future events, but to show us how to live E. The New Testament often highlights the ethical implications of Jesus Christ s return and the final judgment; for example Since this age is coming to end and the things of this world will be dissolved, the Christian ought to have a set of priorities radically different from those who belong to this age (2 Pet 3:10-13) 2. As Christians, we should eagerly await the return of Christ, praying, Come Lord Jesus (Rev 22:20), and we should anticipate that day by reflecting His character as much as possible 3. Since the resurrection of Christ has established the new age of the kingdom of God, we are confident that our labors for Jesus will not be in vain, but will inevitably prevail (1 Cor 15:58) 4. We recognize the return of Christ as our deliverance from tribulation, and as a source of hope for Christians undergoing persecution (Lk 21:28) 5. Since we know the Christ is coming, but we do not know the day or the hour, we must always be ready to meet Him (Matt 24:44-51; 1 Thess 5:1-11; 2 Pet 3:14) 6. We also look forward to receiving our rewards on the last day (Matt 5:12; 1 Cor 3:8-15; 9:24-25; 2 Cor 5:10; Col 3:23; 2 Tim 4:8; 2 Jn 1:8; Rev 11:18) IV. The following confessions concisely state the doctrines we have discussed in this lesson: We believe that the redemption wrought by the Lord Jesus Christ is effectually applied to all His people by the Holy Spirit, who works faith in us and thereby unites us to Christ, renews us in the whole man after the image of God, and enables us more and more to die unto sin and to live unto righteousness; until, this gracious work having been completed in us, we shall be received into glory: in which great hope abiding, we must ever strive to perfect holiness in the fear of God Page 6 of 7
We believe that God requires of us, under the gospel, first of all, that, out of a true sense of our sin and misery and apprehension of His mercy in Christ, we should turn with grief and hatred away from sin and receive and rest upon Jesus Christ alone for salvation: that, so being united to Him, we may receive pardon for our sins and be accepted as righteous in God's sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us and received by faith alone: and thus only do we believe we may be received into the number and have a right to all the privileges of the sons of God. We believe that, having been pardoned and accepted for Christ's sake, it is further required of us that we walk in the Spirit whom He has purchased for us, and by whom love is shed abroad in our hearts; fulfilling the obedience we owe to Christ our King; faithfully performing all the duties laid upon us by the holy law of God our heavenly Father; and ever reflecting in our lives and conduct, the perfect example that has been set us by Christ Jesus our Leader, who has died for us and granted to us His Holy Spirit just that we may do the good works which God has before prepared that we should walk in them We believe that God has established His church in the world and endowed it with the ministry of the Word and the holy ordinances of Baptism, the Lord's Supper and Prayer; in order that through these as means, the riches of His grace in the gospel may be made known to the world, and, by the blessing of Christ and the working of His Spirit in them that by faith receive them, the benefits of redemption may be communicated to His people: wherefore also it is required of us that we attend on these means of grace with diligence, preparation, and prayer, so that through them we may be instructed and strengthened in faith, and in holiness of life and in love; and that we use our best endeavors to carry this gospel and convey these means of grace to the whole world. We believe that as Jesus Christ has once come in grace, so also is He to come a second time in glory, to judge the world in righteousness and assign to each His eternal award: and we believe that if we die in Christ, our souls shall be at death made perfect in holiness and go home to the Lord; and when He shall return in His majesty we shall be raised in glory and made perfectly blessed in the full enjoyment of God to all eternity: encouraged by which blessed hope it is required of us willingly to take my part in suffering hardship here as good soldiers of Christ Jesus, being assured that if we die with Him we shall also live with Him, if we endure, we shall also reign with Him. And to Him, our Redeemer, with the Father, and the Holy Spirit, three Persons, one God, be glory forever, world without end. Amen, and amen. Page 7 of 7
