1 Vol. 10, No. 12 December 2014 Have a Blessed and Holy Advent My dear sisters and brothers, Come, let us worship the Lord, the King who is to come. (Invitatory Antiphon: Week I of Advent) Writing a piece for the December issue of elumen is always a little sticky-wicket. The issue is released at the beginning of December, just missing the Feast of St. Andrew (Nov. 30 th ) and the beginning of his wonderful 30 day novena (NOTE: see the St. Andrew Novena at right). December also includes two major Feasts of Our Lady: the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe (Patroness of the Americas and the Unborn), along with a sprinkling of saints memorials, and then ends with the Solemnity of the Holy Family. The bulk of December, of course, is the Season of Advent in which we meditate and contemplate with joyful anticipation the Birth of God become Man: Emmanuel - God is with us. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16 So begins the great love story. So begins the time of salvation. During Advent, I invite you all to contemplate the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) and the resulting Incarnation. Delve deeply, abandon yourself to God s love, and rejoice -- for God is with you! On behalf of the Lay Provincial Council members, I wish you all a holy Advent and a blessed, joyous Christmas! Your sister in Christ and St. Dominic, Marianne Ms. Marianne Jablonski, O.P. 2 From the Provincial Promoter s Desk Fr. Bede Shipps, O.P. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Saint Dominic, As another Advent begins, it's time to pause in order to remember God's continual offer of mercy and our continual need for conversion, a conversion which that mercy makes possible. In his mercy God the Father sent his own dear Son into this world as one of us, to make the loving offering of a whole life faithful to the Father and to us, even to laying his life down on the cross to save us. To borrow a phrase from Hallmark, our heavenly Father "cared enough to send the very best." When I was a child (and later), relatives would ask, "What do you want for Christmas?" Somehow Santa had remarkably good connections with those relatives. Perhaps we could rephrase the question to get a special focus on the graces of the Advent season. One or more of the questions below may help focus our response in prayer to God's overwhelmingly kind offer of new life in the Christ Child, born for us, lying in a manger. "What do you want for Christmas?" What do I genuinely need to have happen in my heart, priorities, and relationships? What healing do I need from God in order to forgive? From whom, by rights, should I ask forgiveness? What graces is God poised to give? What new commitment to answering some need or relieving some suffering is God asking me to make? (We know that the Lord never asks for anything without giving the grace to say "Yes" to his call.) In silence, can I ponder yet again the Father's sheer graciousness in sending the Son to redeem me and the whole human race? What opening is God providing for me to show kindness in my family, Chapter, parish, and workplace? What choices can I make to overcome habits of sin or indifference? Whom does God want me to see with new eyes? What does the Lord want to give me, or to others through me, for Christmas? Some of you may remember the poignant Simon and Garfunkel song where the news of fighting in Vietnam and the carol "Silent Night" run simultaneously. We live in a world where so many things compete with the Good News and even try to destroy it! Individualism undermines family life and the whole network of mutual obligations. As I write this reflection, there are literally millions of refugees in grave danger in the Middle East. An increasingly secular culture cuts the West off from the benefits and beauty of a culture of love. "Sin numbs the heart," Pope Francis has said. Now as in the time of Saint Teresa of Avila, "the world is on fire." Let's pray for one another in these days to be rooted ever more completely in Christ, and to love one another in such a way that the world, seeing our actions, will find hope. You are all continually in my Masses and prayers. A blessed Christmas to all of you! Your brother in Saint Dominic, Fr. Bede Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 2

3 The Advent Fast before the Christmas Feast Ms. Louise A. Mitchell, O.P. St. Catherine of Siena Chapter, Philadelphia, PA The U.S. bishops pointed out, in 1966: Of the many penitential seasons which at one time or another have entered the liturgical calendar of Christians, three have particularly survived to our times: Advent, Lent, and the vigils of certain feasts. 1 The practice of fasting during Advent goes back to at least the year 490, at which time it was a forty-days fast similar to Lent. 2 This may come as a surprise to many, these days we rarely think of Advent as a time of penance and fasting. Advent is more a rushed preparation for gift giving, with shopping and Black Friday sales consuming our time and energy. As a result, the bishops said, this season has unfortunately lost in great measure the role of penitential preparation for Christmas that it once had. This is even more evident today than in 1966: In fact, as I write this, advertisers are already using a Christmas theme to push their products. And it isn t even Advent yet. Let s change our mindset this Advent. Let s spend more time in pray and fasting than in shopping, and dedicate this time to true preparation, preparation for something more important than giving gifts God s coming, God s advent. We will thus remind ourselves that as Christians, although immersed in the world and sharing its life, we must preserve a saving and necessary difference from the spirit of the world. Our deliberate, personal abstinence will be an outward sign of inward spiritual values that we cherish. 3 The USCCB has put out an Advent calendar that can help us to do just that. Let s be more present to God and to the meaning of Advent as we prepare for the coming of Christ into the world. For, as the Catechism instructs, Only when Christ is formed in us will the mystery of Christmas be fulfilled in us (n. 526). 1 National Conference of Catholic Bishops, Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence, November 18, The History of Advent, Catholic News Agency, -of-advent/; Jennifer Gregory Miller, Catholic Activity: History, Customs and Folklore of Advent, National Conference of Catholic Bishops, Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence. 5 Contemplare Corner I Praying for the Poor Souls in Purgatory Marie I. George, O.P. Errata: This article on praying for the poor souls should have been in the November elumen. The article that was published was an early draft, and was not the one that should have been included. Apologies. ed. I have always been one to pray for the souls in purgatory, especially from Nov. 1 8 when one can get a plenary indulgence applicable only to the souls in purgatory. (See The.Enchiridion.of.Indulgences.pdf, within the document search for cemetery. ) I admit I do it partly because I hope that once those souls are liberated, they will pray for me. But even if they weren t going to pray for me, it is such an easy thing to do to alleviate someone s suffering, that it is hard to pass up. Recently I read Fr. Charles Arminjon s The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life. At a certain point he claims that the Doctors of Church say that the sufferings of purgatory are worse than those on earth (p. 141), but without giving any references. As I read on though, it became apparent why this would have to be the case: - Those in purgatory suffer continuously while those on earth usually get some kind of break (they sleep, a friend visits, etc.). - Those in purgatory realize that their sufferings can gain them no merit, whereas we on earth can grow closer to God by willingly accepting our suffering, and we can also offer it up for the benefit of other people. - Those in purgatory no longer have the distractions we have on earth, and consequently their longing for God is immeasurably increased and their separation from Him exceedingly afflictive (and they realize that they are responsible for this separation). Here is what Thomas Aquinas has to say in his Commentary on the Sentences (IV Sent., d. 21, q. 1, a. 1, qc. 3). He opens by quoting Augustine: Augustine says in a certain sermon: The fire of Purgatory will be harsher than any of the punishments that anyone can feel or see or think of in this life. He continues: There will be a twofold punishment in Purgatory: one of loss, namely, insofar as they are held back from the vision of God; another of the sense, according as they are punished by corporeal fire; and as to both, the least punishment of Purgatory exceeds the greatest punishment of this life. For to the extent that something is more desired, to that extent its absence is more troublesome. And because the affect by which the highest good is desired is the most intense in holy souls after this life because the affect is not retarded by the weight of the body and also because the term of enjoying the highest good would already be arrived at unless there was some impediment, therefore they maximally sorry in its delay. Similarly also since pain is not a wound, but an awareness of a wound; someone more sorrows about something hurtful to the extent he is more sensitive; whence wounds which occur in the most sensitive places are those that cause the greatest pain. And because the entire sense of the body is from the soul, therefore if something hurtful acts on the soul itself, of necessity it must be the case that it is maximally afflicted. That the soul suffers from corporeal fire, we are assuming here, for this is taken up later on (d. 44, q. 3, art. 3, qc. 3). And therefore it is necessary that the pain of Purgatory as to the pain of loss and of sense exceeds every pain of this life. The first pain that Aquinas speaks of, corresponding to the third mentioned by Fr. Arminjon, is easy to understand. What he says about the second pain, however, is clarified by what he says elsewhere: the powers of the sensitive part [of the soul] do not remain in the separated soul (Disputed Question on the Soul, art. 21). Thus, a soul in purgatory cannot feel pain, but only sorrow. If in fact souls in purgatory suffer from physical fire, this suffering could be so great that they would prefer any physical suffering on earth to it, but it must take the form of sorrow (which is in the will) and not of pain (which is in the body). Note that the Church has never made an official pronouncement on whether souls in purgatory suffer from corporeal fire. Not only does this teaching on purgatory give us motivation to pray for the dead, it also encourages us to act in such a manner as to avoid purgatory. 6 Preaching on the International Bridge By Ms. Alexandria Faiz, O.P. St. Mary s Chapter, New Haven, CT When Our Blessed Lord was born, the Good News of His Birth was not just for the few who actually visited the stable; it was not just for those in Bethlehem or only for the Jews but Christ is for all peoples. [The] three kings from a foreign country represent all of us coming to find Jesus. No one is excluded from coming to Christ and receiving his love, wrote Fr. Luuk Dominiek Jansen, O.P., a priest in Ireland. The image of the three magi traveling across country borders guided by a star is one of my favorite Bible passages. It was pure delight for me to learn that the three wise men kneeling in front of the holy family also appear on the front of the tomb of St. Dominic in Bologna, Italy. In view of St. Dominic being the patron saint of astronomers, carving these star-guided worshipers on his tomb is divinely inspired. There s a more important symbol here too. It reminds us that the Dominican Order continues to guide its members as they travel to new lands (whether that means to a new country, new state, or new neighborhood). And so we must be particularly attuned to cultural and historical contexts. No surprise then that a Dominican pioneered the method of adding modern archaeological research to scriptural studies. Fr. Marie-Joseph Lagrange, O.P., converted a former Turkish slaughterhouse into what he insisted on calling l École Pratique d études Bibliques (Practical School for Biblical Studies) in L École Biblique is the Holy Land s oldest and preeminent research center and school for biblical studies. Fr. La- Grange was known for making long trips by camel to explore the sites of biblical Fr. Marie-Joseph Lagrange, O.P. (Credit: ebaf.edu) events. With his efforts, after its founding, his school quickly distinguish itself when it identified the original site of Jerusalem two years. It has been the center of Dead Sea Scrolls research since the first texts were published in The École s most famous publication The Jerusalem Bible has been translated around the world. Situated in East Jerusalem on the site of the martyrdom of St. Stephen, its students and staff daily witness the interreligious context of the modern world. This sensitivity to different cultural and religious influences has inspired the community to begin a new bible project called The Bible in Its Traditions (BEST). 7 One of the nice traditions in the Dominican Family is our regular prayers for our dead. Please have a Mass celebrated for all the deceased members of the Dominican Laity in the Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A., and in particular for our sister below. I also ask everyone to pray one Rosary for all our deceased members: Name: Mrs. Florence Grzybowski, O.P. Religious Name: Bernadette Chapter: Immaculate Heart (304) Location: Buffalo, N.Y. Final Promise: June 29, 1958 Date of Death: November 20, 2014 Please remember our sister, Florence, who died in Christ with the hope of rising with Him. Send the names and dates of members who have died to your Regional Editor, so that they can be included in our continued prayers for the dead. International Program for the Final Year of the Jubilee The coordinator of the Jubilee presented the final program of international events for the Dominican Jubilee (800 years) that will begin within a year, November 7, 2015, the Feast of All Saints of the Order. The International Program of the Jubilee consists of 14 events. Some of them will be celebrated simultaneously in each local community, others at the provincial level, and some in one place with the participation of representatives of the various entities of the Order. The events of the international program seek to give space to different dimensions of Dominican life: some are celebratory and festive, others invite to the contemplative and liturgical dimension; others are more academic and invite to reflection; some focus on specific areas of our preaching such as art, defense of human rights, and youth ministry. Contemplare Corner Too Monthly Musings for Spiritual Edification By Mr. Harold Koenig, O.P. St. Thomas Aquinas Chapter, Charlottesville, VA Vox clara ecce intonat Thy Will be Done on Earth... We have seen horrors this past year. Can any deny this? We have seen the smallest part of it. Atrocities go unnoticed, unrecorded. Not every abused wife or tortured child suffers where people hear or see. Babies starve in a world of plenty. The place of their dying has no marker; their parents tears reach no ear, not one on earth. We pray that the Divine Will be done, on earth as in heaven. But this is... awkward. I am part of that earth wherein I pray that God s will be done. So, as I grow into fully meaning this prayer, I cannot do so without fear. He must change me. It will hurt, does hurt. God does not ravish us. If for a moment he overwhelms our will, He does so only to restore it, to draw it with chains of love into his freedom. The hymn sings of a sleep-drunk mind, mens torpida. We groan when we throw our blankets aside. We can expect to groan as we are drawn into his Light. E sursum Agnus mittitur // laxare gratis debitum From above the Lamb is sent to forgive debts freely. His will is Love and that we know ourselves to be loved. No path which leads to a cross can be easy, but no hardship is unbearable where the Lamb gives strength. He comes in victory, in which He gives us no small share. Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 7

8 AROUND THE PROVINCE REGION 1 Rosary Rally in Hartford On Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 approximately 20 members from St. Mary's Chapter in New Haven, Conn, attended a Rosary Rally in Hartford at the Archdiocese Cathedral of St. Joseph. This was the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the installation of the Rosary Rally as an annual diocesan event. The program consisted of an opening Procession of various religious groups from around the state carrying their particular banners. Fr. Bevins from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, CT, gave an opening talk on the power of the Rosary including quoting Pope St. Pius V. He told me that he was inspired to quote Pius V after reading a book on various papal writings. Our Dominican presence was very strong and duly noted by Archbishop Leonard Blair. Speaking with him after the event, the Archbishop said he was very impressed with all the Dominican crosses he saw. He appreciated the gesture of my offering our service to the archdiocese and said the archdiocese can't go wrong having so many Dominicans. Recently, Dominican Friar, Rev. Steven C. Boguslawski, O.P., was appointed to Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Hartford, in addition to his duties as Moderator of the Curia, effective October 6, Our St. Mary's Chapter Religious Assistant, Fr. Elections will be held. REGION 6 Region VI Retreat by Mr. Michael Murphy, O.P. The Region VI retreat was held October 24-26, 2014 at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center in Norwood (Cincinnati), Ohio. The retreat was attended by over 70 Lay Dominicans from chapters in Kentucky and Ohio. Fr. Albert Trudel, O.P., was the retreat master. During the course of the retreat, one novice was received, Peter Clark of Our Lady of Queen of Peace Chapter in Louisville, KY. The theme of the retreat was the New Evangelization and its relation to the Family. The term New Evangelization is popular and widely used, but can be abstract. In this retreat, the concept of New Evangelization Fr. Albert Trudel, O.P., about to preach a conference. was made concrete and specific through reference to the Holy Family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus; the truth about how the Holy Family can show us how to live in our own families. Like Mary and Joseph, we are to live in silence, listening for the Word of God. With humility we are to ponder, then to act to intentionally define ourselves as Catholic, both within our own Continued on page 9 Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. The third Sunday of Advent marks the anniversary of one of the most famous Dominican homilies ever preached. The Dominican missionaries of Hispaniola in 1511 had witnessed the cruelty of the colonists who enslaved the Indians. The friars carefully prepared a sermon using Sacred Scripture and the doctrines of St. Thomas Aquinas to argue the equality of all human beings, and they chose Fr. Antonio de Montesinos to deliver it. After the sermon, the angry colonists visited the governor and then confronted the preacher at the Dominican House demanding his punishment. When the Superior, Pedro de Cordoba, revealed that the homily had been prepared by the entire community and that it was warranted because the colonists treated the Indians as the beasts of the field and did not attend to their souls, the authorities demanded that the priest recant all that he said the following Sunday, or the Dominicans could leave the island. The next Sunday Fr. Antonio ascended the pulpit, repeated the sermon, and then told the colonists that the friars would not absolve the sins of anyone who continued to treat the Indians in a cruel manner. The congregation turned against them and wrote to the king of Spain who ordered their silence. By 1512, 35 laws were issued concerning the Indians which improved their conditions. This homily launched the first international debate on the human rights of indigenous peoples. A reproduction by a converted colonist who became a Dominican can be read at Newsletter of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, Province of St. Joseph, U.S.A. Page 9
