Introduction Call to Worship Please sit or kneel 4 &b &b œ j œ œ œ œ œ œ j œ œ œ œ œ œ O God you are my God, my soul thirsts for you; for your œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ j œ œ œ œ Œ lo-ving kind-ness is bet-ter than life it-self. My lips shall praise your name. O God you are my God, my soul thirsts for you; for your loving kindness is better than life itself. My lips shall praise your name The Collect for Purity Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Almighty God, to whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Two Great Commandments Please remain sitting or kneeling Celebrant: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 4 The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these your laws in our hearts.
The Collect of the Day Please remain sitting or kneeling Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things, graft the love of your name in our hearts, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all that is good, and by your great mercy keep us in this condition, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The First Reading Please be seated Gospel Hymn Please stand Jeremiah 17: 5-8 This is what the Lord says: Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. 6 They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land. 7 But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. 8 They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit. Reader: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Thou art the Way: to thee alone from sin and death we flee; and he who would the Father seek, must seek him, Lord, by thee. Thou art the Truth: thy word alone true wisdom can impart; thou only canst inform the mind. and purify the heart. 5
The Gospel Reading Please remain standing Luke 6: Reader: Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ, according to Luke chapter forty-three beginning at verse forty-five. Glory to you, O Lord. Reader: 43 Jesus said, A good tree can t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can t produce good fruit. 44 A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. 45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Gospel Hymn Please remain standing Thou art the Life, the rending tomb proclaims thy conquering arm; and those who put their trust in thee nor death nor hell shall harm. Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life: grant us that way to know, that truth to keep, that life to win, whose joys eternal flow. The Nicene Creed Please remain standing 6 Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man.
Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in the saving work of Jesus Christ? For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn Please remain standing Lord of All Hopefulness Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labours, and give us, we pray. your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray. your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. 7
Sermon Please be seated The Invitation Orvin Lao, Lay Pastoral Associate You can also listen to the sermon again online at stpaulsbloor.org. The Offertory The Offertory provides an opportunity to regularly contribute to the work of God, as expressed through St Paul s. Our Vision is, by the power and grace of Jesus Christ, to be a transformative community for the city. As followers of Jesus we have the privilege to participate in and stewardship responsibility to support God s Kingdom ministry through the local church. You can give by: putting contributions in the offering plate that is passed around, setting up preauthorized giving, or giving online using either our website or app. Thank you for your generosity. Offertory Anthem Please remain seated O for a Closer Walk with God O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! Return, O holy Dove, return! Sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast. So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Stanford Offertory Prayer of Thanksgiving Please stand as the offering is presented Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 8
The Prayers of the People Please sit or kneel to pray Each prayer will end with this response: The time of prayer will end with this response: Leader: Leader: Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Merciful Father, Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Exhortation & Invitation Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Celebrant: You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from this day forward in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God. The Confession Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all, we acknowledge and confess our many sins, which we have committed by thought, word, and deed, against your divine majesty. We earnestly repent, and are truly sorry for all our misdoings. Have mercy on us, most merciful Father. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake forgive us all that is past, and grant that from now on we may always serve and please you in lives wholly renewed by your Spirit, to the honour and glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. God s forgiveness is declared: Celebrant: Almighty God our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all who turn to him with heartfelt repentance and true faith: have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 9
Celebrant: Listen to our Lord Jesus Christ's words of assurance to all who truly turn to him: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11: 28 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 The apostle Paul says: Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1: 15 The apostle John also says: If anyone does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 2: 1-2 Celebrant: The Lord be with you and also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is indeed right, our duty and joy, that we should always and everywhere give thanks to you, O Lord, holy Father, mighty Creator, and eternal God. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with the whole company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you, and singing: 10
Choir: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O Lord most high. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer of Consecration Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted and in his holy gospel commands us to continue a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood. On the night that Jesus was betrayed he took bread and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 11
Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of your life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer of Humble Access Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not even worthy to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord who delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat this bread and to drink this wine, that our bodies and souls may be cleansed by Christ s body and blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Lamb of God Choir: O Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. The Communion 12 All who are baptized in any Christian Church and seek to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour are invited to receive the bread and the wine. Please come forward and kneel or stand at the rail. To receive the bread, hold out your hands, crossed with palms up To receive the wine, hold the bottom of the cup and guide it to your mouth For health reasons, dipping the bread in the wine is not permitted. If you prefer to receive a blessing, please indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest. If you require gluten-free wafers, please inform a communion administrant.
Communion Hymn I Come with Joy I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved, and free, the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me. I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ s communion bread. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us makes us one, and strangers now are friends. The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near, is in such friendship better known: alive and among us here. Together met, together bound, by all that God has done, we ll go with joy, to give the world, the love that makes us one. Music During Communion Set Me As A Seal Upon Thy Heart Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. William Walton 13
The Lord s Prayer Please sit or kneel to pray Prayers After Communion Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty and everliving God, we thank you with all our hearts for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. We acknowledge your love and care for us in making us members of his mystical body, the blessed company of all faithful people, and heirs of eternal life. And here we offer and present ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a holy and living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. Celebrant: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen Announcements Please be seated 14
Hymn Please stand 3 4 How firm a foun da tion, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his ex cel lent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, to you who to Je sus for re fuge have fled? How Firm a Foundation How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, To you who to Jesus for refuge have fled? Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, For I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose I will not - I will not desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake, I ll never - no, never - no, never forsake! 15
