A Letter from Pastor Chris Dear Friend, The Bible is filled with miracles. Sometimes they are called signs and wonders. Each of these words helps us understand the true significance and purpose of the miraculous. The primary purpose of a sign is to point people to God. While a sign seeks to bring about belief, it does not force people to belief (cf. Exodus 4:1-17). Furthermore, a sign is evidence of divine authority. The word wonder acknowledges God s supernatural activity in a physical world. The basic idea is that a wonder is a special manifestation of God s power. It is usually an unexpected physical event that promotes God s divine purposes. It is God alone who works wonders (cf. Psalm 72:18). The qualifiers of an authentic miracle are then twofold: (1) it is an unexpected physical occurrence that (2) points us to God and His divine purposes. The desired results of an authentic miracle are also twofold: (1) it is to encourage belief and (2) inspire us to worship the one true living God. The Bible makes clear there were some in the crowd that seeing they do not see (Matt. 13:13). In other words, they could see the physical manifestation of God s power through miracles, but it did not always produce belief. Just as they could audibly hear the teachings of Jesus through parables, but they did not understand (i.e. hearing they do not hear ). My desire in writing this book was to examine each of the 40 miracles of Jesus. Each miracle is a physical sign with a divine purpose. I encourage you to read through the miracles to strengthen your faith and to inspire your worship of the God of Israel. He Who Has Eyes, Let Him See! Pastor Chris 5

Introduction Jesus earthly ministry to the multitudes consisted largely of two parts: teaching (discipleship) and caring (ministry). Jesus teaching ministry involved the use of parables. In fact, Jesus seldom spoke to the multitudes without using a parable. Matthew 13:34 states, All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them. Similarly, Jesus caring ministry consisted largely of miracles. John 20:30-31, And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all contain over twenty miracles. The Gospel According to John contains the fewest. There is a list of miracles found in Appendix A of this book. However, it is important to make clear that lists of miracles have slight variations. For example, some do not include the virgin birth of Jesus within the list simply because Jesus didn t perform the miracle. Therefore, the variances exist largely due to differing criteria in developing the list. To the best of my knowledge, I have developed a comprehensive list. However, my greatest desire is to encourage you to read the miracles and have your faith strengthened and be inspired to worship the LORD in awe and wonder. Also included are Hidden Treasures (i.e. Scripture Memory Verses) for you to memorize as you study the miracles. While I believe that God is still actively performing miracles, I must consider what role miracles play in my own ministry. 1. I don t seek to perform miracles. John performed no sign, but all things that John spoke about this Man were true (John 10:41). Since John the Baptist did not need to perform miracles to authenticate his ministry, neither do I. 2. I don t deny the presence of miracles. And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book (John 20:30). Since Christ performed miracles, there is no reason to deny they are real. 7

Miracle One: Jesus is Born of a Virgin This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 1:18-25 Matthew 1:18-25 NKJV: 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. Matt. 1:

Hidden Treasure 1: And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 Hidden Treasure 2: Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. Matthew 1:23 Introduction: While Jesus did not perform this miracle, it is no less miraculous. Furthermore it lays the foundation for the validity of Jesus ministry and Divine purpose. The birth of Jesus is unlike the others in the genealogy list (cf. Matt. 1:1-17). Each father begot his son. That is until Joseph and Jesus. Jesus was born of a virgin mother. Jesus is conceived in the womb of a virgin through a miracle of the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 1:26-28). Some have argued the Hebrew word almah in the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 is to be translated young woman instead of virgin. Anticipating the young woman will be with a child and will give birth to a son is not a helpful sign since this would be an everyday occurrence. There should be no doubt that the proper interpretation of both Isaiah and Matthew is asserting that Mary was a virgin. Furthermore, betrothal is similar to our engagement period, with the exception they are already considered legally married. Therefore, Joseph and 10

Mary were already married but the relationship had not been consummated. The virgin birth of Jesus establishes deity and together they (i.e. virgin birth and the deity of Jesus) are an essential part of the Christian faith. The irreducible essence of the Christian faith are: (1) the inspiration and authority of Scripture, (2) the deity and virgin birth of Jesus Christ, (3) the vicarious substitutionary atonement, (4) the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and (5) the physical return of Jesus Christ. Let s consider the significance of the names associated with this miraculous birth. Key Point #1: His name is Jesus. An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and confirmed that Mary s pregnancy was of the Holy Spirit. Joseph was already mindful to put her away secretly. While the relationship had not been consummated, a legal divorce would have been necessary. Joseph was told to name Him JESUS. The name Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua which means YHWH is salvation. The angel of the Lord settled Joseph s heart and confirmed that Mary had been faithful to Joseph. 11

Key Point #2: His office is Christ. The Messiah would hold a threefold office: Prophet, Priest, and King. Jesus was the anticipated Messiah, which means anointed. Christ is the Greek word for anointed. Christ as Prophet is the Word of God incarnate (cf. John 1:1-18). He will speak and teach the Word of God. Christ as Priest offered Himself as the sacrifice for humanity (cf. Hebrews 4:14). Because of the cross of Christ as our High Priest, humanity has the opportunity to have a restored relationship with God. Christ as King rules and reigns in the hearts of His people (cf. Ephesians 1:20-23). Christ Jesus sits at the right hand of God, crowned in glory (cf. Acts 7:55-56; Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3, 8:1, 10:12, 12:2, 1 Peter 3:22; Revelation 3:21; Matthew 22:44; Acts 2:33). Key Point #3: His title is Lord. Jesus is Lord is an affirmation that Jesus is both fully God and fully man. He is Immanuel which is translated, God with us. Make no mistake that Jesus Christ is Lord! He is God who has come to us. He is not 50% God and 50% human. That would make Him something less than God and something less than human. He is fully 100% God. He is fully 100% human. He is LORD! One Last Thought: Those 3 words Lord Jesus Christ fully encompass the ministry & Gospel of our Savior. 12

Miracle Two: Jesus Turns Water into Wine This Miracle Is Found In: John 2:1-11 John 2:1-11 NKJV: On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Whatever He says to you, do it. 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast. And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, Every man at the 13

beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now! 11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. Introduction: Since this is the beginning of Jesus ministry, at this point He has only called six of His disciples (i.e. Andrew, John, Peter, James, Philip, and Nathaniel). These six accompany Him to the wedding in Cana. Weddings of virgins took place on Wednesday afternoons while weddings of widows took place on Thursdays. The female relatives of the bride were usually in charge of the wedding and since Mary took initiative to remedy the lack of wine, it stands to reason that Mary, along with Jesus, would have been related to the bride in some manner. We must be careful to not read Jesus response to Mary as disrespectful. When Jesus says, Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? it is not disrespectful. Instead, the word woman is a term of respect and affection. He addresses her in the same manner from the cross (cf. John 19:26). Also, His question carries the idea of What is it that you would have me to do? Jesus demonstrated great respect for His mother. When Jesus makes the 14

statement, My hour has not yet come, the statement, suggests that Jesus does not want what He is about to do to be a public display. It would be for a select few to know and to encourage their belief (cf. 2:9-11). Key Point #1: If you want to see a miracle in your life, then you must act in obedience to Jesus commands. His mother said to the servants, Whatever He said to you, do it John 2:5. Each miracle of Jesus is going to be met with instruction and faith. Obedience to His instruction will be a direct reflection of faith. The verb do it is an active imperative that indicates instant implementation. In other words, there should be no delay between Jesus instruction and the obedience. We too are to act immediately upon Jesus instructions. This is the principle of delayed obedience is disobedience. Jesus could have easily created wine without the presence of water. He could have easily created wine without the assistance of servants. He chooses to involve people because of His divine purpose to encourage and strengthen their faith. Key Point #2: Purification comes through the blood of Christ, not through human effort. Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to 15

the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty to thirty gallons apiece John 2:6. John s writings are filled with numerology. He sees the significance of the numbers and their symbolism. Furthermore, John tells us the purpose of these six waterpots was for ceremonial purification. Jesus is giving us a foreshadowing that His blood will replace the ceremonial washing of purification that is brought about by the works of men (the number six). The author of Hebrews reminds us that purification comes through the blood of Christ. And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission (Hebrews 9:22). Key Point #3: Authentic miracles will always manifest the glory of Jesus and encourage faith in Christ. This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him John 2:11. John identifies this as Jesus first miracle. There is a hermeneutic rule called the Law of First Mention or the First Occurrence Principle. The idea of the principle is to study the Scripture where a subject is mentioned for the first time because it may give insight into understanding subsequent occurrences. Since this is the first miracle that Jesus performed, we should anticipate that miracles are 16

going to manifest the glory of God and encourage faith in Christ. Isn t it interesting that the people whom observe Jesus first miracle were servants and His disciples? One Last Thought: Each miracle of Jesus will flow from His compassion upon people (cf. Matthew 9:35, 14:14, 15:32, 20:34; Mark 1:41, 5:19, 6:34; Hebrews 4:14). 17

Miracle Three: Jesus Heals the Nobleman s Son This Miracle Is Found In: John 4:43-54 John 4:43-54 NKJV: 43 Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also had gone to the feast. 46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe. 49 The nobleman said to Him, Sir, come down before my child dies! 18

50 Jesus said to him, Go your way; your son lives. So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Your son lives! 52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Your son lives. And he himself believed, and his whole household. 54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. Introduction: For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country John 4:44. It is clear that John is showing a comparison and contrast of how different people of different backgrounds responded to Jesus. Some rejected Him or were insincere and shallow (cf. John 1:11; 2:13-24; 4:1-3; 7:1), while others accepted Him (cf. John 4:39; 4:45; 12:20-22). The healing of the Nobleman s son is a contrast of the indecisive faith of the Galileans and the faith of a Gentile nobleman. We have a narrative in our culture that declares, seeing is believing. It is the pragmatic philosophy of a lost world apart from Jesus. Even 19

some from religious circles have embraced this philosophy. The nobleman believed that Jesus could heal his son, but his faith was not without limitations. Key Point #1: Limitation #1: He believed Jesus had to go to Capernaum to save his son (cf. John 4:46-47). The nobleman believed that Jesus could do something about his son s illness, but he believed Jesus had to go to Capernaum to save his son. We sometimes wrongly believe that the distance between Jesus and our problem is too great. Capernaum was about 20 miles from where the nobleman encountered Jesus. There is no distance that can separate you from the love of Christ. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39). Jesus first miracle of water to wine was a demonstration of God s power over time. The second recorded miracle of healing the nobleman s son is a demonstration of God s power over space. There are no barriers to the depths of God s great love. 20

Key Point #2: Limitation #2: He believed that Jesus had no power over death (cf. John 4:49). The nobleman understood the urgency of the situation, but did not recognize that Jesus is the giver of life. The nobleman said to Him, Sir, come down before my child dies (John 4:49)! Life, both physical and spiritual, is a gift from Jesus. Our very breath is at His goodwill. Key Point #3: Limitation #3: He believed the words of Jesus but not yet belief in the Person of Jesus. When I was a child I believed the Bible to be true. I had a basic understanding that the Word of God was true, but that s not the same as when I believed in the Person of Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. The nobleman believed the words of Jesus first. Jesus said to him, Go your way; your son lives. So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way (John 4:50). When he returned home and confirmed that it was just as Jesus said, and exactly when Jesus had said it, he himself believed, and his whole household. The latter was a belief unto salvation. One Last Thought: Our faith has limitations that can be overcome, not through our own doing but through Christ. 21

Miracle Four: Jesus Casts Out a Demon This Miracle Is Found In: Mark 1:21-28 Luke 4:31-36 Mark 1:21-28 NKJV: 21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are the Holy One of God! 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be quiet, and come out of him! 26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him. 28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee. 22

Introduction: Beginning at Mark 1:12ff, Mark provides us with four scenes that describe the authority of Jesus: [1] Jesus authority over sin (vv.12-13), [2] Jesus authority through preaching (vv ), [3] Jesus authority in discipleship (vv ), and [4] Jesus authority has power (vv.21-28). It is worthy to note that Jesus spoke with authority, while the scribes spoke from authorities and are bound to tradition. Furthermore, it is the power of Jesus authority as demonstrated in the casting out of an impure spirit that we see yet another miracle of Jesus. Key Point #1: There are demons in the pews (cf. Mark 1:23). One cannot help but imagine how many times the possessed man had attended synagogue services without others having the slightest awareness of his demonic situation. We would be naïve to believe that Satan is not actively at work through his demonic dominions. It was the presence of Jesus that exposed the situation. Is your spirit frequently at odds with other believers? While demons do not possess Christians, they can certainly influence them. It is important that our spirit is aligned with the Body of Christ. Key Point #2: The demons even acknowledge Jesus humanity and deity (cf. Mark 1:24). 23

The demon acknowledged Jesus humanity Jesus of Nazareth as well as His deity the Holy One of God! Knowing facts about Jesus is not the same as having faith in Jesus. We might attend religious meetings, be able to share facts about Jesus, and even fear judgment; but those are not the evidence of salvation. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble! (James 2:19). Key Point #3: The demons are a bad roommate that won t leave on their own. Notice the man only has one unclean spirit, yet when the demon speaks he uses plural pronouns. Why? He has taken up residence and sees the host as a partnership. Leave us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who You are the Holy One of God! Wait a second! Did you notice the final shift back to a singular pronoun? It stands to reason that the demon is fully aware that Jesus is the Holy One of God, but the man with the unclean spirit does not yet realize that Jesus is the Son of God. It is only through the authority of Jesus Christ that demons leave. It is not the will of the demon, nor is it the will of the possessed/oppressed. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ. 24

One Last Thought: If we desire for our church to spread the fame of Jesus, we must deal with the demonic influence that rears its ugly head in the church. 25

Miracle Five: Jesus Heals Peter s Mother-In-Law This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 8:14-15 Mark 1:29-31 Luke 4:38-39 Mark 1:29-31 NKJV: 29 Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 But Simon s wife s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. 31 So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them. Introduction: Did you know the Apostle Peter was married? That s right! One day after Jesus had been teaching in the synagogue, Jesus along with Peter, Andrew, James, and John went to Peter and Andrew s house and Peter s mother-in-law was sick with a fever. Key Point #1: The miracle of healing is not found in a place, but in the Person of Jesus Christ. Ministry is not something that solely takes place at the church facilities. Ministry should follow us home. While ministry certainly takes place in our churches, Jesus desires to come home with you! 26

Key Point #2: The disciples didn t delay in telling Jesus about her fever. Our culture has a narrative that we shouldn t bother God with the little stuff. He has bigger things to deal with. Unfortunately, this is a misrepresentation of God and His will. God is concerned about your fever! In fact, He desires for you to come to Him in all matters. Key Point #3: When we experience God s healing power in our life, it should prompt us to serve Him. No matter how you have experienced Christ s presence in your life, it is important to express your gratitude through serving Him. One Last Thought: Ministry produces more ministry opportunities (cf. Mark 1:32-34). 27

Miracle Six: Jesus Heals Many Sick During the Evening This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 8:16-17 Mark 1:32-34 Luke 4:40-41 Mark 1:32-34 NKJV: 32 At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him. Hidden Treasure 3: At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demonpossessed. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. Mark 1:32-33 Introduction: Jesus had performed enough miracles that many more who were sick and those who were demon-possessed were being brought to Jesus. Apparently they just started lining up at the door of Peter s house! Key Point #1: Do your neighbors know that Jesus is in your home? 28

Can you imagine the impact of the Gospel if your neighbors knew that you had a personal relationship with Jesus? Key Point #2: Do you know how to discern between physical and spiritual needs? Those who were in need whether physical or spiritual were brought to Jesus by others who recognized the needs of others. Are you paying attention to both the physical and spiritual needs of others? Don t become so consumed with meeting physical needs that you forget to meet spiritual needs. Likewise, don t become so consumed with meeting spiritual needs that you forget to meet physical needs. We are called to do both! Are you developing a spirit of discernment to help you identify the needs of others? If we are not careful, we can become so self-consumed that we fail to recognize the needs of those around us. We should be lining up at the doors of our churches with friends we are bringing to Jesus! Key Point #3: Are you spending time with Jesus each and every day? Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him. When they found Him, they 29

said to Him, Everyone is looking for you (Mark 1:35-37). Our source of strength for ministry is found in our personal time alone with Jesus. Jesus Himself spent the evening healing many diseases and casting out many demons, but yet He made sure to rise early the next morning to spend time with His Heavenly Father. There will be a direct correlation between your effectiveness in reaching the lost and your personal time spent in God s Word and prayer. Little time in prayer and little time in God s Word do not produce a fruitful harvest! One Last Thought: What role are you playing in Jesus ministry? 30

Miracle Seven: Jesus Helps Fishermen Catch Fish This Miracle Is Found In: Luke 5:1-11 Luke 5:1-11 NKJV: So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. 5 But Simon answered and said to Him, Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord! 31

9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men. 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him. Introduction: Jesus had already called six of His disciples (i.e. Andrew, John, Peter, James, Philip, and Nathaniel). They were with Jesus when they travelled to Capernaum and Galilee, and now Jesus defines their role as disciples: fishers of men. Unlike Jesus miracles of healing the sick and casting out the demonic, this miracle focuses on helping His disciples submit to the authority of Jesus. Key Point #1: Jesus knows more about fishing than the fishermen. There are times we may think we know more than Jesus. We may not say it with words, but our actions. Sometimes we act as though we know a better option or a better plan of action. Peter is a seasoned fisherman. Seasoned fishermen know that fishing on the Sea of Galilee is best in shallow water during the night hours. It would be easy for him to have dismissed Jesus words. After all, Jesus trade was that of a carpenter. Peter s tone seems to 32

be, I will do whatever you say, but I know better. This tone is confirmed when Peter says, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord! Has Jesus given you a command to take action? What has been your response? No matter how much you think you know, Jesus knows more. Key Point #2: The boat belonged to Peter, but Jesus was in command. Not only did Jesus give instructions on how to fish to a group of fishermen, he took command of the boat. All that you have possession of is best utilized when Jesus is in command. When we submit to the authority of Jesus and acknowledge that He is Master then we will see God do great things. Peter begins with reluctance, but ends with submission to Jesus authority. Key Point #3: People are always watching how we respond to Jesus. Don t forget that a large crowd was watching Peter and his response to Jesus. The large crowd was the entire reason that Jesus stepped into the boat. One Last Thought: Our response to authority is always going to be a reflection of our character. How do you respond to authority? 33

Miracle Eight: Jesus Cleanses a Leper This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 8:1-4 Mark 1:40-45 Luke 5:12-14 Mark 1:40-45 NKJV: 40 Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, If You are willing, You can make me clean. 41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, I am willing; be cleansed. 42 As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed. 43 And He strictly warned him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, See that you say nothing to anyone; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing those things which Moses commanded, as a testimony to them. 45 However, he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every direction. Hidden Treasure 4: Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, If You are willing, You can make me clean. 34

Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, I am willing; be cleansed. Mark 1:40-41 Introduction: Within the Bible, several skin diseases were classified as leprosy. Some forms of leprosy can attack the nerves in such a way that it leads to a degeneration of tissue and the leper cannot feel pain. Over time the infection can cause limbs to deform and eventually fall off! Leprosy is a hideous skin disease that illustrates the effects of sin. According to Levitical law, the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head bare; and he shall cover his mustache, and cry, Unclean! Unclean! He shall be unclean. All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean. He is unclean, and he shall dwell alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp (Leviticus 13:45-46). Those with leprosy were banned from the population to prevent the spread of this contagious disease. Key Point #1: The leper understood that his condition separated him from others. Sin, like leprosy, makes us unclean. Look at the relationship between the miracle of Jesus cleansing the leper (cf. Luke 5:12-16) and Peter s words to Jesus after catching a great number of fish (cf. Luke 5:1-11). Peter s words sound like those 35

of a leper, When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord! What was Peter saying? He was declaring his sinful attitude should separate him from Jesus. We should never become complacent with our condition and allow the sin to numb us to the severity of our problem. When we have a proper understanding of the holiness of God and our own sinfulness, it will prompt us to fall to our knees and cry out as Isaiah did, Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts (Isaiah 6:5). Key Point #2: The leper knew Jesus could bring cleansing. The leper declared, If You are willing, You can make me clean. What powerful words! Sin, like leprosy, defiles us but through Christ, we can be cleansed from sin that separates us from God. When we call upon Jesus for cleansing and forgiveness, we will find His compassion and He will not reject our request. 36

There is no reason to continue in our dreadful situation. The leper was so determined to find healing that he broke the law and in humility he boldly made his request known to Jesus. The Bible encourages us to do the same, Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). Jesus is both willing and able! The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that nay should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7:25). Key Point #3: The leper couldn t help but tell others of his cleansing. Isn t it interesting that Jesus instructed the man not to say anything to others about his healing, but instead the leper tells everyone what Jesus has done for him. In contrast, we (Jesus followers) are commanded to tell everybody, and we often keep silent. One Last Thought: Jesus healing of the leper is a physical sign of the spiritual healing made through the atonement of Christ! 37

Miracle Nine: Jesus Heals a Centurion s Servant This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 8:5-13 Luke 7:1-10 Luke 7:1-10 NKJV: Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. 2 And a certain centurion s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. 3 So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, 5 for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue. 6 Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. 38

9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick. Introduction: It is no secret that the relationship between the Jewish people and the Roman government was strained. Yet, here we find a Roman Centurion along with elders of the Jews pleading with Jesus to come and heal the Centurion s servant. Key Point #1: The Centurion demonstrated love. It is easy for others to pray for someone and even desire for the Lord to bless them with a miracle in their life when they have expressed love toward you. Even in the midst of hostile conditions, the Centurion soldier had managed to demonstrate an authentic love for the Hebrew people. They were even willing to testify on his behalf, for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue (Luke 7:5). Do you demonstrate love to others, even those to whom there is expected to be animosity? Always demonstrate love toward others, regardless of the circumstances. There may come a day when you need God to perform a miracle in 39

your life and they may be the very people to intercede on your behalf. Key Point #2: The Centurion demonstrated humility. Humility is not the first quality to come to mind when describing Roman citizens, especially a Centurion soldier. The Centurion soldier said, Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed (Luke 7:6-7). Once again, we see an attitude of humility associated with a miracle of Jesus. It is appropriate when bringing a petition before the Lord through prayer that we approach Him with humility. Key Point #3: The Centurion demonstrated faith. We are marveled by the miraculous, but Jesus was marveled at this man s great faith. What an amazing thought. We are not told what the Centurion has heard about Jesus that prompted him to seek our Jesus help. Perhaps he heard news of Jesus healing the nobleman s son from a distance. Perhaps those who reported to him were giving reports of the many miracles that Jesus had performed. Whatever testimony was given to this man, it included the authority by which 40

Jesus spoke. Since the Centurion was a man of authority, he understood that Jesus had authority to perform miracles. For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. The Centurion acknowledges Jesus authority and in so doing demonstrates great faith. There is a great relationship between our understanding of Jesus authority and our faith. How much authority does Jesus have in your life? One Last Thought: Great faith that is matched with love and humility is such a rare occurrence that it would marvel Jesus. 41

Miracle Ten: Jesus Heals a Paralytic This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 9:1-8 Mark 2:1-12 Luke 5:17-26 Mark 2:1-12 NKJV: And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. 2 Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. 3 Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. 4 And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven you. 6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone? 8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to 42

the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Arise, take up your bed and walk? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins He said to the paralytic, 11 I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. 12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, We never saw anything like this! Hidden Treasure 5: Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Arise, take up your bed and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins He said to the paralytic, I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. Mark 2:9-11 Introduction: Perhaps one of the most familiar miracles is that of the four friends who lowered the paralytic through the roof because the crowd was too large. News had traveled quickly that Jesus was back in Capernaum and they immediately began to show up at the house in which he was staying (perhaps Peter s house). Key Point #1: Jesus looked up and saw the commitment level of four men who were concerned for their friend. 43

The house was full and the doorway was crowded. These four men didn t allow the obstacle to stop them from coming to Jesus. They were men of action who took the stairs to the roof and cut a hole to lower their friend before Jesus. Sometimes we are too quick to allow circumstances to discourage us and prevent us from seeking the help needed. Our commitment level will be revealed in whether we find a way or find an excuse. Fishers of men should always find a way. Key Point #2: Jesus looked down and saw the man s greatest need was forgiveness. It seems strange that Jesus did not begin with healing the lame man. This was clearly why his friends brought him there. Yet Jesus looks beyond the physical and sees the man s greatest need is not the ability to walk, but his ability to live. Jesus then performs his greatest miracle forgiveness! Key Point #3: Jesus looked around and saw His detractors eager to make accusations against Jesus. It seems unlikely that the religious leaders would have been the first to arrive, but they apparently had front row seats to Jesus miracle. Perhaps others made room for them to enter the house. Regardless, they were exactly where Jesus wanted them to be as He demonstrates His authority over sin and not just the physical. 44

Jesus knowing the hearts of His detractors said, Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Arise, take up your bed and walk? Jesus demonstrates that He has power to forgive sins by performing the miracle of healing the lame man. Each physical miracle is a demonstration of Jesus divine authority and purposes. In case you missed Jesus claim of deity in the forgiveness of sins. And, in case you missed Jesus claim of deity in the healing of the paralytic. Then He explicitly claims deity when He refers to Himself with the messianic title, Son of Man. Jesus was making it abundantly clear that He is the Messiah, God incarnate, and the One who forgives sins. What a glorious moment. Yet some in the crowd were so spiritually blinded that they could not see the Messiah was standing before them. One Last Thought: Examine your heart when you enter God s house for worship. Are you coming with friends in anticipation of that God will move in your midst or are you coming with a critical spirit? 45

Miracle Eleven: Jesus Heals a Man s Withered Hand This Miracle Is Found In: Matthew 12:9-14 Mark 3:1-6 Luke 6:6-11 Luke 6:6-11 NKJV: 6 Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him. 8 But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Arise and stand here. And he arose and stood. 9 Then Jesus said to them, I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy? 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to the man, Stretch out your hand. And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. Introduction: The Sabbath is not to be confused with Sunday. Sunday is The Lord s Day is associated with the Resurrected Christ because He arose on a Sunday morning. The 46

early church met on the first day of the week for worship (cf. Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2). The Lord s Day (i.e. Sunday) is a picture of the grace of God before work begins. The Sabbath (i.e. Saturday) is picture of rest after work. The Sabbath was an important part of the Jewish faith and the religious leaders had turned the day of rest into a strict list of rules. Ironically, they work harder on the Sabbath to observe their rules. Instead of a day of rest, it has become a burden of rules to follow. Jesus went to the synagogue to teach. The Scribes and Pharisees knew that Jesus would be there and they came to see if He would heal anyone on the Sabbath. If so, they would have another accusation against Jesus. Jesus knew their thoughts and did exactly what they anticipated. Before Jesus performs this miracle, He pushes their buttons by acknowledging the Sabbath and then healing them man. Key Point #1: God will never ask you to do something and then not enable you to do it. Jesus commanded the man to do something that he was not able to do. Our response to an impossible command from God should be faith that is matched with obedient action. 47

Key Point #2: God s timing will be on His schedule and not ours. The religious leaders had made the Sabbath something that God did not intend. Instead of a day of rest it had become a day of relentless religious ritual. God has a right to interrupt your schedule. Key Point #3: Where there is a divine operation, there will be demonic opposition. When we see God actively at work, we can also expect demonic opposition. The Scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage. To be filled means to be controlled. The Scribes and Pharisees allowed their rage to control their behavior. As Christians, we are called to be filled with the Holy Spirit. That is, we are to allow the Holy Spirit to control our behavior. One Last Thought: The distance between God s command and God s enablement is measured by our faith. 48

Miracle Twelve: Jesus Raises a Widow s Son to Life This Miracle Is Found In: Luke 7:11-17 Luke 7:11-17 NKJV: 11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, Do not weep. 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. 16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has risen up among us ; and, God has visited His people. 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region. 49

Introduction: This passage is filled with comparisons and contrasts to be made. Jesus and His followers were on their way to a city, when they passed by a crowd of mourners. Key Point #1: Are you headed to the City or the graveyard? The crowd following Jesus is on their way to the city while the mourners are on their way to the cemetery. Those who have placed their faith in Christ are following Him to the City. Those who are apart from Christ are spiritually dead and headed to the graveyard. Key Point #2: Do you have compassion for those headed to the graveyard? Another key component to the miracles of Jesus is compassion. Jesus was often moved with compassion. Perhaps He saw the comparison of what His own mother would soon encounter: a widow who is grieving the loss of her son. Jesus was a man of sorrows and empathizes with the widow. Undoubtedly, Jesus understood the pain and sorrow that sin and death have brought into the world and He was moved with compassion to take action. 50
