1 22 Jesus is A through Z ~S, Part 2~ Sun of Righteousness, Star, Son of David, Son of Man/Son of God All Staff Pre-Class Arrange tables and chairs. Pray for tonight s class. Have music playing. Take attendance. 20 min. REVIEW Review previously learned adjectives and titles of Jesus. Ideas: o Hand out A through (current letter) sheets (from A-Z Mini Posters ) to pairs of students. Have them work together to memorize every adjective/title on their sheet. Then have them come up front and recite them to the class. o Have a student come to the front of the class and pick a letter, A through (current letter), out of a bag and then try to remember all the adjectives/titles that go with that letter. o Play Bingo with adjectives/titles. Ask review questions from previous lessons. See Jesus is A through Z Review Questions. Ideas: o Toss out candy for correct answers. o Form teams and play Bible baseball. o Form teams and play tic-tac-toe. (A correct answer allows a team to place its X or O. ) o Play musical chairs. If student answers a question correctly, he/she is NOT out. All Staff 20 min. BIBLE MEMORY WORK Students will work on memorizing doctrinal verses. Each student will have his/her own list or book to work from, containing a chart for teachers to initial as students quote the verses one at a time, two at a time, etc. (Teachers: Please read instructions on the Bible memory work charts.)

2 Remind students that there will be prizes for those who pass with a score of 80 percent or better. Remind students that during Bible Memory Work time, everyone must be working! Encourage them to work together to memorize verses, as opposed to distracting each other. Divide the class into four groups: two each for 5- to 7-yearolds and 8- to 10-year-olds, one teacher with each group. To cut down on the confusion and noise, two groups may leave the room to practice verses in another classroom, the hallway, etc. Coloring pages with the 10 Commandments or other Bible verses are available to help occupy visitors (or younger/distracted students) while their classmates are quoting verses. 5 min. RULES & PRAYER Review Power Hour Promises with the students, reminding them of proper behavior during class. Pray together, thanking God for your time together and praying that each person will understand and obey God s Word and grow into a strong Christian. 20 min. BIBLE LESSON Teacher Prep: Read Malachi 4:2, Revelation 22:16, 2 Peter 1:19, Matthew 21:15, Matthew 16:13-16, Genesis 3:15, and Luke 1:35. Pray for anointing. Items Needed: Letter S posterboard; Bible; printed words/pictures of Sun of Righteousness, Star, Sun of David and Son of Man/Son of God ( Jesus is Letter S, Part 1, Words-Pics visuals). Introduction Show the letter S posterboard. We are learning about Jesus character (who He is) and power (what He does) by exploring His titles and adjectives from A to Z. 3 Lesson I m thinking of two different words that sound the same: one of them means a male child, as related to his parents, and the other one means the object in the center of the solar system, around which the planets revolve. What are the two words I m thinking of? (son and sun) Jesus has both of these titles: Son (S-O-N) and Sun (S-U- N). We re going to talk first about the sun that shines in the sky. What does the sun do for us? (it provides light and heat, without which nothing [plants, animals, humans] on Earth could live) How is Jesus like the sun? (without Him, nothing can live; He is the Light of the World, etc.) Listen to this verse from Malachi: Read Malachi 4:2 from your Bible. What is Jesus the Sun of? (Righteousness) What does righteousness mean? (the quality of being righteous or right [good, doing the right thing, without sin]) Without the sun, there would be no life on Earth. Without Jesus, there is no righteousness. Have a student attach the words/picture for Sun of Righteousness to the S posterboard. Our sun is really a what? Hint: When you look at the sky on a clear night, you can see lots and lots of these. (star) Listen to how Jesus describes Himself in Revelation 22:16: Read Revelation 22:16 from your Bible. 4 The morning star (which is actually a bright planet, usually Venus) can be seen in the eastern sky immediately before sunrise. When you see the bright morning star, you know it is almost day. That s why the morning star is also called the daystar. Jesus is called the Daystar in 2 Peter 1:19. He shines into our hearts and brings us hope: night is past; day is here! Have a student attach the words/picture for Star to the S posterboard. Jesus is the Sun: S-U-N. He is also the Son: S-O-N. Listen to what the children were crying out (shouting) about Jesus in Matthew 21:15. Read Matthew 21:15 from your Bible. Whom did the children say Jesus was the Son of? (David) In this case, son means descendant. Jesus was David s great, great, great, great (etc.)-grandson. What groups of people were sore displeased (mad) that the children were calling Jesus the Son of David? (the chief priests and scribes) By calling Jesus the Son of David, the children were saying that He was that special, long-awaited Son of David that the prophets had foretold of: the Messiah (Christ). This upset the chief priests and elders because they didn t believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Have a student attach the words/picture for Son of David to the S posterboard. 5 Jesus asked His disciples, saying, Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? So they said, Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. What two Son of titles did you hear? (Son of Man and Son of the living God) Jesus often called Himself the Son of Man. Way back in Genesis, right after Adam and Eve sinned for the first time, God promised to send a Savior. The Savior would not be an angel or another specially created being, but a man one of Adam and Eve s own descendants. Jesus is that promised Son of Man. But Jesus is not just a man. Listen to what the angel told Mary in Luke 1:35. Read Luke 1:35 from your Bible. Jesus is both the Son of Man and the Son of God. What are some things Jesus did that show He is a man? (He was born; He grew, He was tempted; He got hungry, thirsty, and tired; He prayed; He died; etc.) What are some things Jesus did that show He is God? (He knew all things; He did not sin; He healed people; He calmed storms; He forgave sins; He raised His own body from the dead, etc.) Have a student attach the words/picture for Son of Man/Son of God to the S posterboard. Life Application What S titles of Jesus did we talk about tonight? (Sun of Righteousness, Bright and Morning Star/Daystar, Son of David, Son of Man and Son of God) Direct students attention to the big Jesus is A through Z board. 6 Jesus is so amazing: it takes all of these titles and more to try to describe Him! Take a moment to pick a couple of your favorite titles or adjectives, and then we re going to pray. Thank Jesus for being that title or adjective for you. For instance, if you choose Good Shepherd, thank Jesus for watching over you and keeping you safe, like a good shepherd does with his sheep. Give the kids a moment to choose a couple of titles/adjectives and then lead them in prayer. 10 min. BIBLE SKILLS Use the Books of the Bible display board to point things out as you ask these questions: How many books are in the New Testament? (27 [3 letters in the word New x 9 letters in the word Testament = 27]) How many Gospels are there? (4) Name the four Gospels. (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) Hand out Bibles. Remind students to handle Bibles carefully and to help younger students find verses. Find the third Gospel, chapter 1, verse 32 (Luke 1:32). (Have a student read this verse out loud.) Whom is this verse talking about? (Jesus) This is what the angel Gabriel said to Mary when he was telling her that she was going to have a very special baby. Now find the second Gospel, chapter 1, verse 1 (Mark 1:1) in your Bible. (Have a student read this verse out loud.) Whom does this verse say Jesus the son of? ACTIVITY/SNACK Supplies: A-M bingo cards (generated through print-bingo.com) Call words (all the titles and adjectives of Jesus from A-M that we have learned) Alpha-bits (or other cereal) to use as markers Napkins (If needed, see Jesus is A through Z, Lesson 15, M, Part 2, for more information on making bingo game.) Play A-M bingo using Alpha-bits as markers. Have older kids help younger kids read the titles and adjectives on their bingo cards as needed.
