DO YOU KNOW THE STORY OF OUR FIRST PARENTS? A long, long time ago, when God created the heavens and the earth, and all that is seen and unseen. He made everything out of nothing, including the first man and woman. Their story is found in the Bible, in the first three chapters of Genesis. God created Adam, and his wife Eve from Adam s rib! They were very happy and lived in a place called the Garden of Eden. God loved Adam and Eve very much, He made them in His image and likeness. They were never sad, they did not get sick, and they would never die. They had what we call original grace, which means that God gave them special gifts - not because they deserved them, but because God loved them. Adam and Eve had a very special relationship with God, He gave them everything, but wanted to test their obedience to Him. In the middle of the Garden of Eden, there were two trees: The tree of knowledge of good and evil, and the tree of life. God told Adam and Eve that they could eat of any tree in the garden, except the tree of knowledge of good and evil - and if they ate of this tree, they would die! One day, the devil (a bad angel) disguised himself as a serpent, and told Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. He told her that it would make her like God. Eve knew it was wrong to eat the fruit, but wanted to be like God, so she ate it, and gave some to her husband, Adam. God was saddened by this, and took away His gifts to Adam and Eve. They would have to leave the garden, they would be tempted to sin, they would get sick and someday die, and worst of all, they could not go to Heaven! However, God loved them so much, He promised to send them a Savior - and we know that this Savior is Jesus Christ! This story is important to know because it shows us to obey God, but also because it tells us about Adam and Eve s sin, called Original Sin. Because all people descend from Adam and Eve, we all have original sin. Original sin prevents us from having God s grace and life, it keeps us from Heaven. We need a solution to this problem, and Jesus gave us one, it s called BAPTISM!

1. How were the man and woman made? Why were they special? 2. Where did Adam and Eve live? 3. What is original grace? 4. What was the test God made for Adam and Eve? 5. Did they pass this test? Why or why not? 6. What happened to Adam and Eve because of this? 7. What is this sin called? Do we have it? 8. How do we fix this problem we have?

Garden of Eden: Devil: Obey: Sin: Heaven: Savior: Baptism: QUESTIONS 1. Does everyone have original sin? Why? 2. What does original sin do to us? 3. How do we get rid of original sin?

About 2000 years ago, God sent His Son into the world to free us from sin. Jesus is His name. Jesus knew that we needed His help to be freed from sin, so He gave His life for our sins, so that we could have eternal life! Jesus knew the importance of Baptism. He was baptized by John the Baptist! He also told His disciples to baptize all followers of Jesus: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and to teach everyone the faith. Jesus made Baptism a sacrament. A sacrament is a sign that causes God s grace. The things you see show a spiritual reality (one you can t see)! Just as water washes you clean from dirt, so in Baptism, the water washes you free from sin.

The Church teaches that anyone who has not already been baptized can be (CCC 1246)! The Church also teaches that we must be baptized (CCC, 1257), Jesus told us to be baptized! He told His disciples to baptize the faithful in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, so today, priests and deacons baptize people (CCC 1256). You may wonder why we should be baptized; well, here are some good reasons: 1. When you are baptized, you are born into God s family! God becomes your Father, Jesus becomes your brother and the Holy Sprit lives in you! (CCC 1213) 2. You are united to Jesus Christ in a special way, and share in His life, death and resurrection. (CCC 790) 3. You become a member of the Roman Catholic Church. (CCC 1267), and become able to participate and celebrate in the Church life and liturgy (CCC 1119, 1141). This means you can listen to mass, and when you are ready, receive the sacraments! You share in what is called the Common Priesthood (CCC 1268). Just like the priest at your church, you can offer up sacrifices, love and worship to God, but in a different way. 4. When you become a member of the Church, you become a member of the Mystical Body of Christ (CCC 798, 1267). This means that you and all other baptized people are united with Christ. Your body has many parts: fingers, toes, ears, heart, legs, and arms. Well, the Church is the same way, all the people are like different parts of the body that work together to do God s work, and Jesus is the head of the body! 5. You receive a mark on your soul (that part of you that you can t see, but gives you life and allows your to laugh, love, think, remember and know God) (CCC ). This mark makes you special in God s eyes, and tells God that you belong to Jesus Christ! (CCC 931, 1272) 6. You will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, grace (God s life in us), virtues (habits of doing good), and will be well on your way to a holy life! 7. Lastly, once you are baptized, all your sin (including original sin) is washed away and you will be able to one day be with God forever in Heaven. What Joy! Be sure to thank God for your baptism!

We learned seven reasons why we should be baptized, can you remember them? See how many you can list To help you, here are some clues: 1. Before you were baptized you had a family, a mother, a father and maybe some sisters and brothers. After you were baptized you were born into who s family? 2. Baptism gives you a special share in the special times in Jesus life. Do you remember what these special times were? 3. When you are baptized, you join a community. You meet with these people on Sunday mornings. The same word is used for the building you go to Mass in. 4. Just as your body has fingers and toes and different parts, so the Mystical Body of Christ has many parts and we are members. What does baptism do? Does it make us part of this body? 5. Baptism does something to our soul to show that we belong to Christ and are set apart for God. What does it do? 6. What do you receive? They will help you to live a holy life. 7. Because you are baptized, all your is washed away and you will one day be with God forever in this place.

If you have a photo of your baptism, you may paste it here. If not, you may draw a picture of your baptism If you have a photo of your baptism, you may paste it here. If not, you may draw a picture of your baptism My name is, and I was baptized on (date) at (church) by (who) according to the command of Christ. My baptismal name is. My parents chose this name because. My godparents are and. My parents chose them because. They help me to know Christ by. On the day of my baptism, I wore and I was blessed with holy oil and was given a baptismal candle. I entered the Roman Catholic Church and became a child of God. My parents and teachers will help me to learn my faith and live my baptismal promises. I am happy that I was baptized because.

When we are baptized, we are either put under water three times or have water poured over us three times. This is the matter of Baptism. Water is very important. We use it to wash ourselves, to wash our clothes and many other things. Water can be very dangerous (that s why we wear life preservers when we are in boats)! Water can also give us life. We drink water and it makes plants grow. Water helps us in many ways. In Baptism, water is used to show our sins are washed away - all of them. Our original sin is washed away too. In Baptism, water shows that we die to sin with Christ (that s why it s poured over us or we are put under it). We are saying that we don t want to sin anymore! In Baptism, water gives us new life as children of God. Water nourishes us, and in baptism, God gives us all we need in grace (meaning a gift or God s life).

In Baptism, we are blessed with Holy Oil called Chrism. In the Bible, Blessed Oil was used to anoint or bless prophets, priests and kings. Jesus was the greatest prophet, priest and king. He was blessed with the Holy Spirit after His Baptism. In Baptism, we are blessed with Holy Oil, to show that we are blessed with the Holy Spirit, and that we too are prophets, priests and kings! We are prophets because we speak the truth. We can tell others about Jesus and God s love for us. We can tell others about The Church that Jesus gave us, the Roman Catholic Church. We are priests because we share in the Common priesthood. This means that we worship God and offer Him our prayers and sacrifices. We can do works for God, for example, I can make my bed, and offer it to God as an act of love! We are also priests when we pray for others and ourselves. We are kings because as children of God, we will inherit the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom is the Catholic Church here on earth, and Jesus taught us about the Kingdom of Heaven.

During your baptism, you received a baptismal candle. This candle was lit from the Easter Candle. The flame of this Easter Candle represents Jesus Christ The Light of the World. As the Light, Jesus shows us the way to God! You received the Light of Christ when you were baptized. Write about how Jesus shows you the way to God and Heaven.

When you were baptized, you probably wore a white outfit. The white shows how pure your souls was, once all the sin was washed away. Because you put on clothes, the outfit itself reminds us that in baptism, we put on a new self and a whole new identity. No longer am I just a person, I am a child of God! I am united to Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit. Do you know how hard it is to keep a nice white outfit clean when you are playing? Well, it s just as hard to keep our souls clean from sin. We have to work at it, and obey God. Remember this always, because sin hurts God.

There are many ways of showing the Trinity. Sometimes we see three overlapping rings that show the three Persons united in One God. Sometimes we see an eye for the Father, an P with an x through it for the Son, and a dove for the Holy Spirit. St. Patrick had a neat way of explaining the Trinity. He found a clover, and said, that each leaf was like a different Person of the Trinity, but together, one clover or One God. Sometimes God the Father is an Old Man, God the Son is a young man (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit is a dove, or a light, or even fire!

In Baptism, the priest or deacon pours water over the head of the baby or adult three times. He says: I baptize you in the name of the Father (first time), and of the Son (second time) and of the Holy Spirit (third time) (CCC 1240). It is important to know that water must be used, we call this the MATTER, and these words must be said, we call this the FORM. Can you memorize the form? The words tell us about God. We believe in one God. We also believe that this God is really three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each Person is not a god, but together, they are one God. This is what we call the TRINITY. The Trinity is a mystery of faith. This means that God has let us know about it, but that we can never fully understand it. We are all baptized in the name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We become children of the Father, Christ the Son of God becomes our brother, and the Holy Spirit live in us (CCC 1213)! There is a prayer that we can learn and pray that will remind us of the Trinity: GLORY BE TO THE FATHER AND TO THE SON AND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW AND EVER SHALL BE WORLD WIHOUT END. AMEN. Can you draw a picture of you with God?

When we are Baptized, We are born into God s family! Jesus was born into the Holy Family. His Mother was Mary. God was His Father, but Jesus needed a man on earth to take care of Him, so St. Joseph was Jesus fosterfather. Jesus knows how important family is, and how much love there is in a family! When you are born you have a mother and father, and maybe even sisters and brothers. When you are baptized, you are born into another family, God s family! God is your Father. Jesus is your brother, Mary is your Mother (for she was Jesus mother and He gave her to us). And, the Holy Spirit will be in you! God loves you so much that He wants you to be loved by the family He gave you, and by His own family! You are very blessed!

The most important gift we receive at Baptism is grace. Grace is God s life in us. When we are Baptized, we are washed clean of sin, and become free to follow God. Because we share in God s life, we are able to God to HEAVEN. At Baptism, the Holy Spirit is sent down to us, and He brings many gifts, in fact there are seven! 1) WISDOM - Wisdom is the ability to see things as they truly are. 2) UNDERSTANDING - Understanding means that your heart cares, listens and forgives. 3) KNOWLEDGE - Knowledge is the ability to learn the faith and know the truth. 4) COUNSEL - Counsel is the ability to make good decisions. 5) PIETY - Piety means we have a deep love for God and His creation. 6) FORTITUDE - Fortitude means we have the courage to do what is right. 7) FEAR OF THE LORD - This means that we understand the greatness of God and that He is very near to us. The Holy Spirit also gives us virtues, which are habits of doing good that help us become closer to God. We must work at these. 1) FAITH - to believe in God and all that He has told us. 2) HOPE - to trust in all God has told us, and to want to go to Heaven. 3) CHARITY - to love God and others, and serve them in love. 4) PRUDENCE - to make good decisions. 5) TEMPERANCE - to use the things around us well (i.e. don t break things) 6) JUSTICE - to give to others what they deserve. 7) FORTITUDE - to always do the right thing, even if it s hard. All these gifts will help us to become holy! What you really need to know from all this is that God is helping you to know, love and serve Him faithfully so that you can be with Him forever in Heaven. He loves you that much!

When we are Baptized, we receive many gifts. Can you remember some of them? I ll give you a little help. 1) The most important gift you receive at Baptism is (Water or Grace). 2) We receive s life in us (God or my parents). 3) Because we share this life, we can go to (School or Heaven). 4) In Baptism, we are washed free from (dirt or sin). 5) After Baptism I am free to (Follow God or Do whatever I want). 6) The Holy Spirit gives me gifts (Seven or Three). 7) Circle the names of the gifts: Wisdom Holiness Understanding Piety Beauty Knowledge Joyfulness Fortitude Counsel Fear of the Lord Laughter Love 8) The Holy Spirit gives us habits of doing good. These are called (Good habits or virtues). 9) Circle the names of the virtues: Caring Faith Joy Hope Charity Prudence Playfulness Loudness Temperance Laziness Justice Fortitude 10) God s gifts will help you to, and God so you can be with Him in. (Heaven, Serve, Love and Know - put these in the right blanks.)

Once we are baptized, our work is not done! In fact we ve only just begun and we have much to do! Every baptized person has responsibilities - he has duties. As Catholics that are baptized, we must: 1) serve others - this means be helpful in every day life, and especially help people to come to know Jesus. We should be cheerful. This kind of help is called charity. (CCC 1269) 2) obey the church leaders - just like Adam and Eve were supposed to obey, we too must obey God in His church. (CCC 1269) 3) receive the sacraments when we are old enough and are ready. (CCC 1269) 4) learn the faith and all about God and His Church. We must learn about His laws and what we must do as Catholics. We must then speak about and protect or defend our faith. (CCC 1270) 5) read the Bible. This is God s book for us, it tells us all about salvation and our Savior Jesus. It is my favorite book! (CCC 1269) 6) worship God. We must go to Mass on Sundays and pray. (CCC 1272)

Do you remember the six duties you must do when you are baptized? Write and tell me how you will live your duties as a Christian.

BAPTISM EUCHARIST CONFIRMATION PENANCE ANOINTING OF THE SICK MATRIMONY HOLY ORDERS

I must learn my faith. My parents will give me a good example and teach me. As well, I will learn at school, in a CCD program, or at Church. I want to learn so much about God and His Church. The Bible is the Word of God. It is divided into two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament teaches us about God and the History of Salvation. God loved the Israelites and promised them a Savior. The Old Testament tells their story. The New Testament teaches us all about our Savior, Jesus Christ, and about the Church He founded, the Roman Catholic Church. I must pray and go to Mass. I must also obey God s laws and believe all he has told us. I must love God with my whole heart and strength. He is so good to me!

I must serve others by being helpful, by sharing, by being a good friend, and by loving everyone. I should serve others cheerfully and because I want to. By serving others, I show God that I can obey Him, and love Him in people around me. How can you serve others? Can you write some ways to serve others and draw a picture? The Catholic Church has the laws of God. When we obey the Church and what the leaders say, we obey God. The Church helps us to live good lives and to be faithful to God. We must obey the Pope (the visible head of the Church who represents Jesus) and the Bishops united with the Pope (the leaders of our area with the Pope). These people will never lead us in the wrong direction, because the Holy Spirit (who is God) will protect them from making mistakes.

Prayer is very important. When we pray we talk with God. We can tell Him all the things we did each day. We can tell God how much we love Him. We can thank God for all He has given us. We can ask Him to give us the things we need, and we can ask Him for things for other people too! Before bed each night, you should pray. Jesus gave us His Mother, Mary, and she can pray with us. She is a good example. One prayer that we can say is the Hail Mary. Memorize this prayer and pray it often.

Jesus loves me very much! He wants me to come to Him. Jesus loves me, this I know, For the bible tells me so, Little ones to him belong, They are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
