1 Annual Assessment and Action Plan To be completed by SPRC and Pastor after assessment meeting Due May 1 to District Superintendent Attached is the Annual Assessment and Action Plan Form (aka "Clergy Evaluation"). This is a tool to assist you in doing formative evaluation, in which the pastor and SPRC work together to improve their ministry for Christ. Thus every church is expected to engage in an assessment of their ministries using the form and process described below. Each pastor and SPRCs should work as partners clarifying the mission of the church, identifying the ministries that are fruitful and those that are not working. That is why you will see questions relating to how the pastor and congregation work together in key areas, and why the form begins with a statement of the church s mission and statistics related to church vitality. There are several stages of this assessment. The pastor and Staff/Parish Relations Committee will meet to talk about the mission of the congregation and what the pastor and people need to do together to strengthen it. This form could be shared ahead of time encouraging conversation in this direction. AFTER this discussion, allow time for members of the committee and pastor to reflect and pray about directions that need to be taken. Meet again to share thoughts and comments. Complete the form together. Your use of pp.1-3 should lead to a specific action plan for the coming year, to be listed on p.4. Send the completed and signed form to the district office by May 1,
2 Annual Assessment and Action Plan 2016 Summary Form To be completed by SPRC and Pastor after assessment meeting Due May 1 to District Superintendent Clergy Church Congregational Goals List goals set by the congregation to accomplish the mission of making and maturing disciples. Vital Statistics List year end numbers for the following: Average Worship Attendance Professions of Faith Percentage of Apportionments paid Percentage of congregation involved in intentional faith small groups Percentage of congregation involved in hands on outreach and mission Evaluation of Pastoral Skills Give BOTH a numerical evaluation of each skill by placing an X on a number from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) and write a short comment. Describe the congregation s role in each category. PREACHING 1-low high How effectively does the pastor communicate the Christian message through preaching quality of content, style and delivery, inspiration to action, relation between Scripture and life, etc. WORSHIP 1-low high Is the worship service planned to be clear, have a central theme, call and feed disciples? 1
3 EQUIPPING 1-low high Is there evidence that the pastor is able to equip members of the congregation for their ministry in the church and community? ADMINISTRATION 1-low high Is the pastor able to competently carry out administrative duties and work? OUTREACH AND WITNESS 1-low high How effective is the pastor in encouraging the congregation to witness to their faith, both in the church and community, by words and actions? TEACHING 1-low high Describe ways that the pastor has been a teacher and small group leader. PASTORAL CARE 1-low high Do members of the congregation feel that they have been cared for in crisis and that the pastor is accessible for counseling and building relationships? 2
4 Review of Pastoral Qualities Review the list of qualities of an effective pastor below and discuss how the appointed pastor exhibits them and how important they are to the effectiveness of accomplishing the mission of this congregation. Put an X in the box on the left of the top 3-4 qualities that are the pastor s strengths. To the right of each description, put an X next to the top 3-4 areas of importance to the church s mission. PASTOR'S STRENGTHS CHURCH'S MISSION Maturing spirituality Exhibits a disciplined spiritual life, maintains healthy boundaries, is accountable for work and actions, participates in opportunities for spiritual renewal and growth. Self Care Maintains a healthy balance among self, family, and work. Collegiality Is involved with and assumes responsibility in peer groups, district and conference activities, and in supporting ecumenical efforts. Service to community and world Is active in the community, is aware of neighbors and needs of the marginalized. Visioning and implementation Looks towards the future; is able to inspire other with the vision and how to get there. Relational Demonstrates a love for others that is compassionate, patient, open. Is able to communicate with and relate to variety of ages and groups of people. Can handle complaints and settle disputes with grace. Servant leadership Style of leadership cultivates gifts of the Spirit and empowers others to claim their call and find their place in ministry. Grounded theology Understands the power of Jesus Christ to bring healing and wholeness, forgiveness and reconciliation, justice and peace, to the lives of individuals, congregations, and communities. Creativity and adaptability Is able to lead and be effective in a variety of settings, in the midst of change, in unfamiliar culture and geography, etc. Inclusivity Models and embraces inclusiveness, demonstrating sensitivity to diversity. 3 updated 3/2016
5 Summary and Action Plan Based on the evaluation of the pastor s skills and qualities above, and the goals and health of this congregation, the following is our plan of support and action in the coming appointment year. 1. Which of the skills or qualities on pp.1-3 need to be addressed to improve the effectiveness of the pastor/congregation team in this appointment? 2. What is your action plan for the pastor and congregation to grow in effectiveness? Examples may include such things as continuing education; time for spiritual/emotional renewal; vocational training; coaching; rearranging responsibilities and expectations; regular communication with SPRC, pairing the pastor with a retired clergyperson who can help coach, restructuring and redistributing tasks among committees, etc. Please be as specific as possible SIGNATURES Date: SPRC Chairperson: Clergyperson: 4
